DIY of The Month – Alphabets of Love

Think you’re a hands-on kind of bride and want to make something really special for your wedding? It doesn’t have to be something elaborate; think small, simple yet significant. It could be a personalised Save-The-Date card, or a memorable wedding favour. You don’t even have to be very good at arts and crafts to make these wonderful mementos. SingaporeBrides shows you how to Do-It-Yourself.

Take personalised wedding favours to the extreme by including each and every one of your wedding guests’ names on the favours. If you think hand-sewn monogram handkerchiefs with your guests’ initials is too old-fashioned and impractical (not everyone uses a handkerchief in this time and day), we have a better suggestion. Easy and quick to do, SingaporeBrides show you how to create personalised coasters made of scrabble tiles with your guests’ names on it. Intrigued yet?

Here’s what you need:

  • 25 Scrabble Tiles
  • Wood Stain
  • Clear Varnish
  • Cork Board
  • Ruler
  • Craft Knife/ Scissors
  • Craft Glue
  • Paint Brush

Time taken for each: 10 minutes
Average cost for each: $15

1. Pick out the letters for your desired name. Using a brush, paint the letters with wood stain and let dry. To ensure an even coat on all letters, blot away excess wood stain on a piece of tissue paper before painting the letters. Continue adding coats of wood stain until your desired shade is achieved.

2. Next, proceed to glue the tiles onto the cork board using craft glue. Start gluing the tiles in rows of 5 from one corner of the board, using a brush to spread the glue out evenly. The letters of your desired name should sit between the rest of the tiles. Do pay attention to the arrangement of the rest of the letters though; you don’t want to spell out any swear words by mistake!

3. Use varnish to set the tiles and give a polished finish to your coaster. Give your coaster 2-3 coats of varnish and leave it to dry for 5 minutes.

4. When the varnish has dried off, use a craft knife and cut around the border of your coaster.

Didn’t we tell you it would be done in a jiffy? Personalised wedding favours don’t get any more personal (or quick and easy) than this, and you can be assured that your guests will be wowed by your effort and sincerity. And, it doesn’t just look good, it has a practical use to it as well! Now go forth and experiment with the different shades of wood stains and arrange your guests’ names in any manner you desire!
