What does it mean?

Would like to understand more from a guy's perspective.

What does it mean when a guy buy a diamond necklace for a gal? Does it mean that the girl meant something to him?

Ha ha ha... thanks you Unfilial Son.

Wanna know from the emotional perspective.

Basically, a diamond necklace doesnt come cheap and it's a big spending. Any man would think twice spending that kinda money on anybody, more so if that gal didnt mean anything special to him.. Think that should tell how expensive he feels for that gal...

actually, its not just the money. That could be subjective. But the meaning behind such gifts. Normally, in our social context, we do not give such gifts to other women unless they are close to us.

Very much depends on the value of the diamond. Can range from few hundreds to few ks nowadays.

If its very, very expensive, perhaps he wanna ask her to be his gf? *shrugs*

it would be nice if everyone thinks the same way we do .. but i'm sure there are some people out there who do not mind spending that kind of money on others, be it for their own agenda or just because it's in their nature.

A little subjective on the agenda/mentality.... some guys do give such expensive gifts to their close GFs as birthday pressies as well?

i knew someone who did that - bring girls on vacations, lavish dinners, etc .. but then he could afford it.

a few years ago, the husband's friend broke up with his girlfriend and she returned all the jewellery he had bought for her. he gave the necklaces, earrings to my husband to give to me (that time we were just bf/gf) .. i barely knew him and of all the people he could have given the pieces to, he gave to me .. until today i am still puzzled.

if the guy is not well-to-do and he buys it - then it means the girl means alot to him. coz i would assume he probably planned and saved up.

just like how a guy will save up for valentine's day, gf's bday and shower gifts on their gf...

Hi,

One of friend who is a nurse received a 1 carat diamond ring on her birthday from her Doctor Boss.

They are not in a relationship and the Doc's wife knew about the gift too.

Without any background/context, how does one decipher the meaning behind the gift?

Is the guy a bf, a close friend, someone who is courting you, someone u've just met etc etc?

Without knowing the background, you can very well infer that
a) that the guy probably has romantic feelings for you (in this case, he shd probably be yr bf or someone who is pursuing u) and has been brainwashed by the ads on tv that diamonds are the best way to show his affections..
b) he wants to get into yr pants (shower you with expensive gifts and hoping for reciprocation)
c)he is just a close/good friend who is aware of your taste for nice jewellery
d) none of the above because i cant think of any other reasons except maybe his family owns the jewelery shop and he wants to get rid of stock.

Wahahahah.... wat a good Q.. Me dun mind being the nurse too should I receive such great gift... =)

As for me, I will ask him why spend such a $$.. There is no point guessing his intention then asking him personally..

If you are already married and the guy is not your husband, be very angry, throw the diamond necklace back at his face and tell him that he is shameless haha

haaa... can tell him that but keep the necklace? Dun waste the monies, since he wants u to keep it w/o obligations, we shouldn't waste ppl's efforts?

hehee... Doll, hidden meaning?

cuclainne: esp private docs, lawyers bosses can be rather nice too... I received branded pouches from my female boss for Xmas yearly... haha.. for me, no assumptions of intentions?

ya lor .. to me, it's just a very nice gesture on their behalf - doesn't even cross my mind that anything inappropriate is going on.

Doll..angry can throw slipper lah.. don't need to throw necklace :P

I do have a guy-friend who buys me branded bags on his own accord whenever he travels because he knows i love bags. And i know very well he has no ulterior motives..only that he knows i will appreciate the gifts (plus that it is more expensive in Singapore and some are not in stock..(he is always generous with his friends). I do have a problem reciprocating his gifts though as i have a tough time buying gifts for guy-friends! I mean..how many wallets/keychains/ties can u buy??

Doll: haha... Can see that...

Siobhan: that's quite true and I believe at times, there is no special meaning to it... the meaning could be that simply as the person appreciate you as a friend, your hard work etc...

Hi,

I guess it's a reward for my friend's work.
She has been working in his clinic for more than 10 yrs already.

I think Docs are generally quite generous with their nurses. Another friend of mine, also a nurse, received Cartier items and air ticket to Japan from his Boss too.

But of course this cannot be compared to what his Boss gets for his wife.

Albee: wow... I shld have take up that coz whilst in poly? (jus kidding)... On a serious note, I think nurses have a noble jobs, esp those in hospitals. Thus, I think some of them do deserved such "rewards"...

Chilli Queen: Only the guy knows the meaning... We can advise what we think, or what are the usual norms from what we had encountered but if you really want to know what he thinks or probably the truth, ask him... Are you hoping that there is "something"?

Just asked her. Her answer goes:

'When a woman buys a tie for a guy, the message sent is she wants to tie him down. Does it apply to the necklace being given to her?'

Item is brand new, from Lee Hwa Jewellery.

Has she accepted the gift? What's stopping her from asking him why the gift directly?

For all you know she may be just subtly announcing that she has just received an expensive gift while you are cracking your head to think of an answer for her hehe

TS: i think ur gf's views are a little over generalised; my HB and I gave our best frenz, who is a guy 2 ties on his birthday last yr, does it mean that we want to tie him down?
happy.gif

Exactly, how well does ur friend know this guy? Other than gifts, did they go on dates?

Haha.. that is an easier method but be careful that it doesn't backfire, else, you might be blamed for causing the unnecessary embarressment?

"how well does ur friend know this guy?"

LW, I am more curious to know how well TS know her colleague to know her intention behind the pondering hehe.

Did she ask you while showing u the necklace what u think the gift means? Most of the time, when a girl shows off an expensive gift given to her to another person, it is in a way, to show off how popular/in demand/actively pursed she is (im not being critical here - nothing wrong with that.she just wanna share her joy (or distaste - if she is being stalked or hates the guy to the core). It is unlikely that she is showing u the gift to ask u to decipher the meaning behind this gesture or the symbolic meaning of the gift.

Gah..i have gotten ties for a few of my guy-friends simply because i have no idea what else to get for them and never had i any intention to tie any of them down. A necklace has no other symbolic meaning except for it being an expensive trinket. Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

Meaning is subjective and up to individual's interpretation.

For me, if I have no romantic notion for the guy but still want the gift, I will pretend that it is a friendly gesture haha since the sender leaves it to me to interpret the meaning.

What do you expect, Iris, since the guy got no guts to tell me the meaning of his gift in my face hahaha

I might confide in a close gf if I am undecided on accepting the gift. But if already accepted still worry for what. A bit extra lor that female colleague.
