Wedding and buying flat concurrently

Hi have anyone here bought a resale flat and held a wedding in the same year before? My htb and I are contemplating to do that next year. Initially the plan was to stay with the in laws until we get our own bto flat (have not applied successfully. But even if we get it, the earliest will be in 2019). However during the marriage prep process,I come to realise that I can't stay with the in laws. Our mindset is totally different and I think this is a recipe for conflict to take place. In fact, most of the arguments during the marriage prep process is due to the differences in mindset between his parents and us.... and I don't want him to be stuck in the middle.

I have spoken to the htb about it. As such, we are contemplating to get a resale flat next year, and get it ready before the wedding. Our wedding is scheduled Dec 2015. Most of my friends have said we are crazy because of all the stress of preparing for a wedding and buying a flat and renovation. Financially, we are able to manage. But feasibility wise, not sure if it can be done or is it advisable. Don't want to overwhelm myself, so would really appreciate any advice here :)

Are we too ambitious?

Hi @lovemylife, I'm in the same situation as you. Fiance and I chose to wed after getting our BTO because we want to have our own personal lives, away from parents.

For me, I'm doing ROM, collection of keys, house renovation and wedding all in next year, with just maybe 2 months gap between each event. I don't know how we're gonna cope but I'm sure if you plan your time well, it should be go well without much hiccups. To make you feel better, I'm also in the midst of a job change haha.

It's nice to know someone who is going through the same things as me! Hope we will pull thru next year! When is your actual day?

Hi! I totally understand ur situation. My HTB and I r waiting for our BTO to be ready Which should be by end of next year. So we will be doing a simple solemnization next year ard july/aug at the ROM office followed by a lunch /dinner at a restaurant for the close ones.

So once we collect the keys we will give ourselves up to 3-4 months for renovation and furnishings. Our AD will be in Mid 2016. just nice can move in to our new house straight away after wedding. Just to give ourselves some space to breathe between each event. Lol

Hi lovemylife,
I think it's possible if you try to keep everything to a proper timeline. :) I got my resale flat in Sept 2014, and have been procrastinating on the renovation as too busy with my job and my fiancé studying and exams too. However, I just started my renovation and normally it takes about 1 to 2 months depending on the size of project to complete. While I leave my contractor to do the renovation, I will go look for a banquet venue, try attending various wedding showcase at Hotels cause you can view all the wedding set ups. I am in the midst of confirming my banquet venue only. The rest all not done yet. ;) My wedding AD is Sept 2015. I think you need to search for your dream house first. Then after paying the downpayment, there's actually alot of waiting time, at least 2 to 3 months before you get your house. You can make use of this time to look for interior design and your banquet venue, it's even better if you have any hotel in mind. A year is still a long time. Mine is about the same as yours. If you need any help, you can PM me. :) Jia you! You can do it!

hello! we are in the same situation. we planned our wedding beginning 2014, but by the time we booked hotel and gotten a wedding package was quite rushed as our wedding is going to be in Jan 2015. And we realised we should have planned for a flat first. I didnt want a BTO as it will be a few years wait. So we went ahead for a resale.
Thankfully, we found a great agent who helped us in many ways. From planning our finances (as hubby and i are totally clueless in all these purchasing of flat things), to understanding our needs and expectations of a home, finalising on our preferred location, and sourcing for units for our viewings. And giving really good advises from her experience on what we should look out for when choosing a resale unit. Not forgetting helping us negotiate on the price base on her judgement on the value of the flat. She helped us secure the unit we wanted. And then the rest of the process from applying for the appointment for our valuation, and appointments with HDB, documents and paperwork. Everything was all well planned and done smoothly. It was a hassle-free thus stress-free process for us thanks to this agent. The whole process took us only 4 months, as we were lucky to get the unit we want on our first viewing session. And we'll be getting our keys 4 days after our wedding! Hubby and i will temporary be staying at our own places until the new house is ready. As the unit we gotten doesn't need any renovation, we aim to move in within a month after getting the airconditioning fixed and a fresh coat of paint.
So well, getting a new place and wedding at the same thing can be done! Get the right people and all will go well and smooth!

hi ppl..I m doing that too.. we have bought our resale flat est to get key by end March or apr n our AD is jun 15.. so after marriage can straught away stay at new house

Hi ladies! At least now i know I am not alone.

Gonna collect keys in 2 weeks time.. AD and ROM in Nov 2015..

My side is, I got ROM in sept 2014. During that period I need 10k to pay back my bond. And we got our resale flat on Sept 2014, AD on March 2015. Just bot a new car due to my work requirement. And I have study loan in hand to pay back. Thus, I guess you are not alone. But frankly speaking, I kinda enjoy this process as you can see that both of you are really going through hardship tgt and making this love stronger. This is for my case la.

It's possible to do both at the same time is money is not an issue. As you have fixed your wedding date then u can start to short list the venues you prefer. Meantime engage a property agent to help u source and filter for the resale flat u have in mind. Depending whether you are the type who want to redo the whole resale flat or do minimum Reno and pay higher cash Above valuation for resale house with good renovation.

If u try working backwards:
Dec - wedding
Nov - reno in resale unit completed and move in. Unpacked
Sept-Nov - Renovation (depends on how elaborate your Reno is. Eg my 4rm BTO flat only take 3wks to Reno after we cfm the theme and design.
U can start shopping for furniture and electrical appliances during pre-cny or post-cny or raya sale. There will be many expo sales or in gain city? Harvey Norman and Best denki too this year. We got good deals eg washing machine, TV during all these deals. But first of all list down the must have and the "good to have" appliances. U can always buy the essential furniture and appliances eg TV in living room, sofa, bed etc first and add-on the rest of the "good to have after ur wedding N move into the new house". Sometime only when u start living in the house then u know what are the good to have items eg oven, microwave, food processor, juicer, coffee maker, TV in the bedroom, entertainment/study room stuff etc.
June-Sept -
You need min 3 mths to transact a resale flat. Meaning u can ask ur agent start looking for the resale flat after cny. And has to confirm the deal latest by June. While waiting for the transaction u can discuss about the reno and start buying furniture and electrical appliance.
Mar-Jun: Source for resale flat and prepare for wedding. Cfm resale flat

So try to cfm ur wedding packages eg venue, bridal and theme while u "shop" for your home. So once u found ur dream home, u have to focus on getting it ready before ur wedding.

Hope my advices help :)

Thank you so much!

can I check. how long does it usually take from confirming a flat to collection of keys for resale flat? is there a std timeframe that is at a normal pace?
also if we are gg to ROM on the same date of our wedding, when would be a good time to start looking? (ie. 3-4mths in advance?) and how possible is it to get the keys to the flat before ROM?
