Thyroid

Hi, can somebody advise me. I want to have my TSH levels checked. Is there any period I can't do the test ie like when menses etc. Pls advise. Thank you.

hey, anyone here with hyperthyroidism? I'm diagnosed with that and one of the side effects besides feeling hungry all the time and fast heart beat, is the "popping out" of the eyeballs. Anyone experiencing that?

hi brides,

i had hyperthyoidism last year. my eyes swelled and lost a bit of weight. i refused to go for medication becuase of the possible side effect. my gp told me to talk to one of her patients who self medicated. basically, i stopped all caffiene, started to eat really healthy n organic and followed as close as possible the book called 無毒一身輕 and 6 months later when i went for another blood test, i recovered. my gp's other patient also recovered and her case was a lot more serious than mine. only our method takes a lot of time and discipline.... God bless and take care!

Hi Blurblobs.. I've just been diagnosed with hyperthyriodism and I'm really worried about the side-effects of the medicine.. i'd probably take medicine, but i read with interest your post on detox. I'm trying to get that book to read. but can I ask you - what are the stuff u do that u think really makes a huge impact? would be really useful for us... And my doctor also warned with that taking medicine will not have an impact on eye-bulging and goiter.... Worried... As we get older, suddenly come to the realization that nothing will be perfect.. including health! *sigh*

hi..
i am also having thyroid...have been on it since 12 yrs old.
well.. currently taking thyroixine 75m/ 100mg..
anyone out there taking the same medicine/

Hi bride,

Saw your post. Thyroid problem can surface on your eyes too, not only neck (common thyroid patients have swollen neck). It's a rarer form of throid, so harder to identify sonce most doctors have never come across such cases.

My mother suffers from a rare form of thyriod, but it was not diagnosed for more than 8 months despite he seeing multiple docs and sinsens.

By the time it was properly diagnosed by a very experienced doctor (doc had previously treated a Philipino lady with similar problem) from National Eye Center, her eye sight deterioate, she lost proper funtion of her eyeballs and her eyes were very swollen. Had to go under extensive surgery to fix her eye while keeping her thyroid under control. Still have to go through surgeries now and then to fix new problems with her eyes.

Me hyperthyroidism, T4 43. Doc said it it mainly due to my last pregnancy last year. Doc said that thyroid is not due to stress. Went to polyclinic, doc ref me to specialist & i choose sgh. Being further check for thyroid. Appt booked early sept. Dun know what will the specialist check on me. Scared scared going there. Hope to get some moral support fm here.. I am now on Carbi 20mg every morning.

Hi Cute, mine is hyperthyroidism too, and shd be due to stress.. Since you got from pregnancy, most likely u will be able to cure it than us with recurrance problem. I did not went specialist, just went gp for blood test and has to go back very frequent for review and adjust my carbi dosage. I test on T3 and TSH instead of T4 coz i heard from doc that its more expensive and not necessary esp we need blood test frequently too to check on our health condition. my last blood test result show that my T3 is back to normal range 25 and tsh <0.01 and my doc not very satisfy with the result so increase my dosage. He said my T3 must reduce to at least 14 in order to see improvement for my TSH

Hi jhoo
That time i ask GP, he said not due to stress. I went to polyclinic cos the medicine will be much cheaper compare to private one. The polyclinic doc also said not due to stress. Personally I do believe that stress is also cause part of it.
Doc said that I will have recurrance problem.
I am 38Kg. Waiting to increase.... Target at 44Kg which is my old weight.
Take care

Hi, dun have to worry so much. Must be happy. I got hyperthroidism 10yrs ago, took abt 5-6 yrs to totally recover, so now everything stable. gaining weight means u r recoverin so dun worry too much. once u stop the medication, weight will go down abit. =) anyway take care & relax, cuz ur heartbeat will go v fast if u r tense. =)

My wife has just been diagnosed with hyperthroidism. She is very sad. Apparently, she was being diagnosed at the Polyclinic through a blood test but there is no referral to the hospital. Is consultation with a specialist in the hospital necessary? She has already started the medication that the doctor has given.

Blade.

Hi superrazorblade
If hyperthroidism is very high, then the doc at polyclinic will referral her to the hospital.
Try to cheer your wife. At first I was also very sad. As Elyn wrote above, must be happy..

Hi to all ladies who have seen doctors at SGH.....Can i just check
> what medicine does doc prescribe?
> any diff in rates for GP refer and Polyclinic refer?
> do we get an appt date almost quite fast or do we normally need to wait for weeks b4 we get to see a doc?

I am a hyperthroidism patient for about a year.....my doc asked me
if i prefer to see a specialist instead cos my result is roller-coater kind, hence i am checking......

hopeully someone could advise...thanks ladies...

hi js> usually in SGH they prescribed carmimazole .Polyclinc referral means you pay a cheaper rate for singaporean. Appt date Im not sure but I am seeing a doc at Gleneagles now.

thanks deb.....i currently seeing GP taking carmimazole too....
so maybe will see how for a while more b4 any switch cos nearer.
Maybe SGH cheaper but GP nearer.

blood test at polyc $11
Such cases, see Dr with appt so definitely faster than those walk in + no need to travel so far.

Now I'm wondering what next, already under med for 1yr, time to review. Had a relapse thus this time most likely Dr will give me the 2 options .... heard not everybody totally heal/live w/o med cos end up as Hypo.

I have a thyroid nodule that swells and goes away from time to time. It was discovered in Oct 2006 but only swelled to a big size about a year ago (which is abt 8 months after I gave birth). I have been seeing a TCM and a specialist. My thyroid functions are on the lowest end of the normal range and I have been put on levothydixin (50mg)for abt 3 mths.

I feel the symptoms of hypothyroidism whenever the nodule swells to a large size (say abt 7cm) - fatigue, daytime sleepiness and cold intolerance. During days when the swelling subsides (I may not be able to feel or see the nodule at all), I feel absolutely normal and fine. But whenever it swells, I feel like a walking corpse with a big adam's apple (yucks!) and cannot wait to just remove the lump!

The specialist advised me to go for surgery and take it out (risk of changing voice and lifetime medication and of course a neckline scar) once and for all.

The TCM doctor is confident that I will be ok without surgery. He says be patient and treat it slowly.

I am terrified of surgery and believe this is due to hormonal imbalance. I cannot however pinpoint what causes the swelling, and every time the lump grows big, it stays big for abt 2-3 weeks. What should I do? Any advice or sharing of similar experiences will be appreciated

Hi all,

Can anybody tell how much thyroid test does cost in singapore ?

and what is the best place to get thyroid test?

Thanks,
Avtar

Blood test should do it i guess. I have a relative who experienced it. The doctor gave drugs to treat it. Surgery might be done if needed.

Hi hiavtar,

Can do test at normal GP clinic. If they feel you need more detail checks, they will refer you to the specialists.

Just to share.

My grandma had Graves' Disease which caused hyperthyroidism. 8 or her 13 children got GD too. My dad escaped and I'm fine. So, can women with hyperthyroidism get pregnant? The answer is obvious.

Out of the eight, 2 had radio-iodine treatment done, 3 had surgery to remove part of the thyroid gland and 3 just needed medication. Sometimes after radio-iodine or surgery, the patient may need thyroxine because the hormone level dropped too much and the person becomes hypothyroid (sluggish, sleepy). Sometimes, still need to suppress using Carbamizole and the likes. Sometimes can change from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid especially after giving birth.

My suggestion is, if you've just discovered you have thyroid problem.... go see a specialist because they will be able to tell you what kind you have. There a quite a few types. Some affect females more and some tends to happen more often to males (TPP) which causes periodic paralysis - my 5th uncle has this. If yours is a straight forward case, you'll be discharged to GP clinics very soon.

How I know all these? Partly because of my family history and partly because I used to do thyroid research for the thyroid doctors at SGH.

Oh ya, the 'gold fish' eye. Many with Graves Disease have Graves' opthalmopathy (goldfish eye), some obvious and some detectable only when they do a scan. The problem will improve after taking medication. The very severe ones will need to go for eye compression where they remove some of the fat built up to ease the pressure.

My 5th aunt has GO. When I was a kid, I was afraid of her because she seem to be glaring at me all the time!! Now she's much better. She had part of her thyroid removed (more than 20 years ago). She's been fine ever since. Only became hypo at one time after giving birth.

Hi ladies, my MIL has multi nodular goitre and she has seen 2 specialists. 1 suggests she goes for an operation (but he is retiring soon and doesn't want to do it) while the other is anti-surgery.

Her problem seems to be getting worse though.

Can someone recommend a good thyroid specialist pls?

I have seen 2 specialists. I cannot really comment if they are good, both ask me to go for surgery to remove my nodule and I will most likely do it soon.
