Just to share.
My grandma had Graves' Disease which caused hyperthyroidism. 8 or her 13 children got GD too. My dad escaped and I'm fine. So, can women with hyperthyroidism get pregnant? The answer is obvious.
Out of the eight, 2 had radio-iodine treatment done, 3 had surgery to remove part of the thyroid gland and 3 just needed medication. Sometimes after radio-iodine or surgery, the patient may need thyroxine because the hormone level dropped too much and the person becomes hypothyroid (sluggish, sleepy). Sometimes, still need to suppress using Carbamizole and the likes. Sometimes can change from hyperthyroid to hypothyroid especially after giving birth.
My suggestion is, if you've just discovered you have thyroid problem.... go see a specialist because they will be able to tell you what kind you have. There a quite a few types. Some affect females more and some tends to happen more often to males (TPP) which causes periodic paralysis - my 5th uncle has this. If yours is a straight forward case, you'll be discharged to GP clinics very soon.
How I know all these? Partly because of my family history and partly because I used to do thyroid research for the thyroid doctors at SGH.
