just a word of cautious.. the road in new zealand arent really dangerous if you are used to driving up to genting. however, in some areas, there are coastal roads and sharp bends... especially the road to milford sound.. have to be extremely careful.. some of the roads have no barriers....

hi babe,
Actually, i m totally new to this NZ thing. just start to read the forum this week =P. well, these 3 kind people (kwan, kite, and TF) inspired my itinerary. but again, since they're driving while i will be taking coach...my schedule may not be as flexible as them.

For South Island, I am planning to cover:
CHC-Lake Tekapo-Mt Cook-Queenstown-Te Anau-Queenstown-Fox Glacier-CHC

Places that I'll miss out(due to the bus route) are:
Wanaka, Cromwell, Franz Josef, Hokitika, Punakaiki, Buller George, Hanmer Springs ....so sad miss a lot =(

These r the accomodations which r recommended in this forum
CHC- Alglenn Motel NZ$80
Tekapo - Tailor-Made Backpackers NZ$60
Mt Cook- High Country Holiday Lodge NZ$66
Queenstown- Aspen Lodge NZ$75
Te Anau- Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers NZ$64
Fox Glacier - Ivory Towers Fox Glacier NZ$70

Hi Iyesha,
You were there on dec...yeaahhh..i can learn a lot from u then. can't wait to c your pics. oh btw, i repost my qn..."May I know whether these attraction sites in NZ (e.g. Hot Air Baloon, Ride Gondola, Shoot Over Jet, Kiwi and Bird Life Park, Glowworm Caves, Red Boat Cruise, Fox Glacier Walk) are closed during X-Mas and New Year's Day ?"

am_blessed,
I went in summer and the shops generally closed ard 6+ or 7+pm. The day is longer than night.. Sunset is at 9pm. I booked all my accomodations way in advanced..As for car rental, teddy from anzed car rental is very good... no problem with the car at all.
We are used to driving up genting .. hence the roads didn't posed much threat to us. However, we did not went up to nugget point because the roads are coastal road and uphill.. have to drive a relatively long distance.. we just looked at nugget point from a distance.. we spent almost three weeks there hence we able to visit a lot of places.. You have to note the timing of the places of interest.. make sure you have sufficient time to reach your next destination.
For us, we drove from invercargill to Te anau..a really long drive.. wanted to see cathedral caves but it closed at ard 2+ or 4pm (can't recall).
Some of the activities are really expensive..there are many must visit or must try places.. i will post more tonite..

Hi mngo,

Actually we've been wanting to visit NZ in Jan 06 after our wedding. If u read the forum, u will be able to find some of my previous postings here enquire abt this n that. Later on we decided tat it was too hectic for me to plan a trip n wedding at the same time, so we postpone it. Then juz last wk, my hubby decided to go in Mar so we've juz check the ANZ website n find any cheap tickets. Well lucky us, we manage to find tickets @ $900 each (not including taxes yet) flying on 27th Mar - 9 Apr ( 2 weeks exactly). So here i am again, reading up the forum n checking out others..

Tot if go in end Mar - Apr, shouldnt be too much a prob.. since its not the peak peak.. taz y wanted to check whether do i still need to book anything in advance like accomodation?

Hi all

i'll be going to NZ too (booked air tics liao) but wondering if taking digital camera how many memory sticks did u all bring or is there a place for u to download into a thumb drive?

me thinking of homestay, anyone tried dat?
me going next mth

Hi Jen,

Wats your itineary like? For accomodation, I was thinking more of motels and a farmstay. Have u pre-book your accomodations?

Babe
oh u might be right. no nid to book accomodation in adv. i went during spring.. years ago. and we did not book in adv. but at dunedin, we could not find a single place to stay! so we had to further drive to other suburbs to check their hotels/motels

Hi Babe

this we going to travel anti-clockwise. we still ve not 'confirm' on e itineary yet but only 1st 2 days r confirmed.

we going to land in christchurch where we will stay 1 day n take e tran-alp train e next day (cos my e time we landed e train ve already departed).
think i will be booking our car online before we travel cos scare we can't get a there (just in case) also e 1st day accommdation (think we will be too tired to look ard compairing pricing)

so which airline u going on? is it direct?

babe

we going to be doing more/ all homestay cos will be cheaper n can learn more abt their culture than motel cos some motels quite X

Jen
u can buy those mobile drive which auto copy the files from your storage card to the drive, and it creates a folder everytime you copy. very good.

the other time before we got this, we had only 1 GBye memory. but now with increasing better camera, 1 GB may not be sufficient

Hi gals

FYI, was told that e airport taxs which we paid r not including coming back (for tics dat r bought online). We ve to pay e tax when departing.

HI mng

e most X i found r $95 per room
which means $47.5each (including breakfast) for dinner just needed additional $20 (buffet style with streak n bbq ribs (home style cooking)

can u explain further or do u ve a pics for me to see for the mobile drive? me thinking of asking e homestay ppl when can they allow us to use their company to download e pics to our thumbdrive. (think i will give them an email on this)

Hi Iyesha,
Thanks for sharing with us abt your accomodations. It's so nice of u =).

Hi Jen,
quoted from your post "FYI, was told that e airport taxs which we paid r not including coming back (for tics dat r bought online). We ve to pay e tax when departing."...You mean, we need to pay airport tax again on the way back to sg? If yes, how much is it? Is it common case, or bcoz ur tix is online?

Hi am_blessed

i'm only sure for those who bought F & E package cos i went to a tour agency n e guy there told me dat we ve to take note of the tax when coming back cos e amt we are pay quoted r only for local n going in not for coming back. but i think quite cheap abt $25 (if i'm not wrong).
is common, thick those dat went, can u offer your comments?

Hi Jen,

I am flying by ANZ first to Auckland and transfer to CHC. I din know abt the airport tax though. Will be checking out with ANZ whether I still need to pay that at the airport.

Currently, I am still planning my route. Its driving me crazy.. Cant concentrate on my work too as I want to cover so many places and yet only 13 Days there effectively. I've planned to go according to Kite's route and try to cover Kaikoura and Nelson. Hopefully i can post something reasonable these few days.

I have actually been contacting the car rental co to get some quotes and deciding whether to rent a 1.5/1.6 L or 1.8/2L car. Which Car co are you booking from and what is the size?

Accomodation wise, was thinking of getting some motel in CHC for the first nite at least and book along as we moved on. I din no that housestays are cheaper.. hmm.. maybe i should check that out too.

Hi Babe

we r looking at toyota model cos u ve to think abt petrol consumation too.
sad.gif

we only looking at 1.6L cos 2L too large liao.

me not sure wat's kite route is but if u going like mine then u may want to take note that some car rental comp will charge an additional fee called 'transfer fee' if u picking yr car somewhere 'out of e way'.

for eg. me picking my car up at greymouth n 1 or 2 companiees said they may charge me $100 plus for transfer fee.

i will need to find e affortable car rental before i can decide on which route to take n where i should book my rooms.

Homestay is quite alright n some of them also got small farms on them. Do take note that some r very X cos they r more bouqti home (more high end)

Jen
mmm maybe i will try to search for a pic and let u know.

as for motel, i only stayed with motel. some is like 69NZ (their currency smaller than us back then) per night. and we cook in the motel.

hi mngo

ok, please do take a pic.

As for cooking, think we dun intend to cook. we thinking even to eat at restur once or twice for e whole tour (must 'treat' ourselves). NZ also known for their seafood n fish n chip so hubby looking forward to it. we also can live on sandwichs cos we not a 'rice/ noodle' person.

Hi Jen & Iyesha,
thanks! will take note of extra $$ for the airport tax.

Here's my brief itinerary:

Day 1: SIN- CHC- Kaikoura
Arrive at CHC roughly 3pm, continue to Kaikoura
Accommodation: YHA Kaikoura.
***Question: Is it convenient to walk from YHA Kaikoura to the Point Sheering Sheep (roughly how many mins)***
Fyi, YHA is somewhere in between Esplanade and Avoc St. However, I couldn't find the location of the Point Sheering Sheep show. So, pls advise =)

Day 2: Kaikoura-CHC
Accommodation: Achilles Motel

Day 3: CHC-Lake Tekapo
Accommodation: Tailor-Made Backpackers
***Question: Is it far to walk from Tailor Made Backpackers to Church of Good Shepherd (roughly how many mins)??***

Day 4: Lake Tekapo-Mount Cook
Accommodation: YHA Mount Cook

Day 5: Mount Cook-Queenstown
Accommodation: Aspen Lodge

Day 6: Queenstown
Accommodation: Aspen Lodge

Day 7: Queenstown-Te Anau
Accomodation: Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers

Day 8: Te Anau-Milford Sound-Queenstown
Accommodation: Aspen Lodge

Day 9: Queenstown-Fox Glacier
Accommodation: Ivory Tower

Day 10: Fox Glacier-Greymouth-CHC
PS: From Greymouth to CHC take TranzAlpine train
Accommodation: Achilles Motel

Day 11: CHC
Accommodation: Achilles Motel

Day 12: CHC-SIN

My only transport will be : Intercity Coach !
The stress comes now when I start to consider the walking distance from the motel to the attraction sites. So I need you gals give me feedback on this part coz I dun want to really trust the distance measurement in the map. Or if you know that the motel/lodge I’ve chosen is actually in ‘ulu’ place, pls let me know.

Thanks so much ^_^

Hi am_blessed,

We drove up to the Point Sheering Sheep show... drove past Fyffe House (Pink houses) before coming to the Point Sheering Sheep Show...
I stayed at Panorama Motel which is located at The Esplanade. I believe it will take about 15 - 20 minutes walk. Lake Tekapo & church of the Good Shepherd are quite far out and it is definitely not possible to walk there from Tailormade Backpackers.

Get a copy of lonely planet either from the library or purchase it....bring it along with you to new zealand.. really very very useful and helpful. I planned my itinerary and accomodations using lonely planet. One thing to note.. the estimated distance and time from one destination to another is based on the shortest possible route.. if you intend to detour to places of interests.. you might want to allocate more time for travelling.

Hi Iyesha,

Thanks for the info and pics. all places u stayed looks ve nice & clean! no wonder the prices are high =). Hmm..let's see, since Tailormade Backpacker is out...I need to find other nearby place at Lake Tekapo then. Suggestion, anyone?

To Kite:
U stayed at Achilles motel in CHC, rite? u mentioned in your earlier post that it's 10 mins walk from the motel to cathedral sq..but what i see from the map is like almost 2km -_-o

Hi Lyesha,

Is tuscana motor lodge close to CHC Central? Reason being I would like to pre-book an accomodation in CHC for my first night there and would like to find some where quiet (no noisy) and yet close walking distance to city central.
Anyone has any good recommendations?

Hi Babe,
Yes.. Tuscano Motor Lodge is quite close to CHC central...have to walk a little along avon river.. maybe a 10-15 mins walk. We chose this motel cos it is near to the christchurch casino. The hosts are really very nice and friendly.. room also very clean.

lyesha
the accomodation you stayed in nz is impressive. how much is per motel? me too stayed at blue peaks in queenstown

Thanks Lyesha,

I have check out Thomas. They do have ensuite hotel double room available on my date of arrival. Hence, I am booking from them for CHC. Was thinking tat since its opposite the Arts Centre, it should be quite convenient for us to walk around CHC City on our first night.

Did u go whale watching at Kaikoura? What is point sheering sheep show? Is it along the route between Kaikoura and CHC?

hi babe,
Glad that you have settled ur accomodation in christchurch...

I did not go whale watching at Kaikoura.. maybe we find it no point to pay so much just to spot a few whales...there is even a possibility that you might not spot any. Point Sheering Sheep show demonstrate the sheering of sheep fur. It is in Kaikoura ... have to drive past fyffe house (pink colour houses)...

babe,
u can contact tedddy from anzed car rental.. very good service. car in very good condition.. during our trip we din encounter any problems at all.

Need any help please let me know. I can help you with the itinerary.

am blessed
a meal at food court is abt 6-7 nz dollars. coffee is 3 nz dollars. basically you have to get ready 10nzd if u wanna eat at food court.

at some rural area, you can get cheap fish and chips. better to cook if you got time cos cheaper
