Indian wedding Services in Singapore

Hi guys,

how have all of u been? me was supposed to go for the raffles hotel showcase but i was v sick the past few days. was down with stomach flu n couldnt even get out of bed.. didnt go in the end. so sad
sad.gif
FH also couldnt make it as he was not in sg. did anyone go for it?

i was having a discussion w my friend the other day n i realised i have a dilemma. since young, i always wanted to have my traditional indian wedding at a temple. however, now i have a problem cos i would like to invite my non indian frens for the traditional wedding as many of them expressed interest in wanting to see how the traditional indian wedding is like. so now, im wondering if i shd still hv it at a temple. a bit difficult for them plus cant serve non veg. has anyone considered having their traditional wedding at other venues? right now im considering either civil service club, orchid country club, khalsa or grassroots club. any other suggestions guys? the problem is for some of these places like orchid country club, we cant cater food from outside. so i really am at a loss. orchid country club has some malay catering thingy but wonder whther that will be alright.

me will be having my engagement end this yr. n i still dont have any idea what the procedure is like. mum also seems kinda blur cos my family hasnt had a wedding in yonks n she doesnt really know. it will be held at my house but i dont know what i have to do. just stand n look pretty? hehe.. anyone knows? im south indian by the way so i duno whether is it called nichayam or parasam.

speaking of sleep, i really wonder if i can sleep the night b4 my wedding!. will prob be too excited n then end up having dark eye circles the next day!. hopefully i dont yawn during the wedding ceremony! hee..

Hi Lisa,
Just dropping some comments since i am doing my Wedding Reception at OCC...i will be using an outside caterer but i had to pay a surcharge per person...Sigh...forgot how much since i dont have the details with me right now.and i heard that the malay caterer's food is tasty and that it will suit our local tastebuds...Nichayam is held when the bride and the groom's family have an informal meeting...u know like go to each other's place and meet immediate family members and impt relatives and have dinner or something...it is impt to consume something in each other's house...Parasam is a more formal occasion in which u would call a priest to preside over the rituals...the priest will explain the procedures and things to get b4 the parasam...the main purpose of the parasam is to fix the wedding date in written form in front of all the relatives...parasam is just as impt as the wedding...u are half-married since it involves the exchanging of rings. don worry too much dear...don have to stick closely to every single tradition...if yr side has little experience, why dont u consider having it at yr FH's place, provided that they know something? u know my FH's side has never seen a parasam b4 except in tamil movies..? and somemore we had the parasam in london...we were totally blur on where to get our resources...couldnt even get a nice silk saree...ended up wearing a gold sequin saree, something that would be worn for a reception. i was so sad that my parasam was not going to be up to singapore standards...noting my disappointment, my FH ordered cake, food, decor & PG 2 DAYS BEFORE OUR PARASAM! i only saw the outcome when our parents were about to exchange the thambalams.

Hey Lisa, actually I think you should go ahead and have your Indian wedding ceremony at the temple. I'm pretty sure your non-Indian friends would like that because they don't get to witness something like that often and neither do they go to the temple. It just lends to the whole authencity of everything. I attended my Hindu friend's wedding at a temple as well...she's also South Indian. It was my first such experience and I thought it was very interesting. I didnt feel uncomfortable, me and my non-Indian friend wore Indian outfits and we had alot of fun.

Most of the Indian weddings I've been to are Punjabi/Sikh so it was cool to see something different. The only thing was that the actual ceremony was soooooooo long!!! I though the pandit would never stop!

And yea the food was all veg, but it was great. She catered from Riverwalk.

I forgot to update you gals on Sam Ong. I had his trial on Friday.
The guy is marvellous! He did such nice work, the colors were all very subtle but he managed to bring my eyes out really well. I was impressed cos the eyeshadow is so minimal yet the eyes really "popped". He says he's gonna try fake lashes for the shoot to see if i'm comfortable with those. I'm pretty excited!

I highly recommend Sam if anyone wants a good makeup artist. He discusses what hair/makeup suits your features, coloring, outfit etc. So you don't have to worry if you think he can't do makeup for Indian outfits. AND he doesn't use the color of your outfit on your face, which is huge plus for me.

Lisa - Hope u r feeling better now.
nichayam = Immediate groom's family members come over to the bride's to ask for her hand. Matters of wedding is discussed.

parasam = Engagement.. where rings are exchange denoting the union of the couple. Trays are exchanged denotion union of both families.

As for temple wedding, it is also my dream to hold my AD in a temple. I'll also be inviting my non-indian friends. Friends whom I think are interested to know abt our culture and ceremonies.. serving veg food is part of the process, which I think friends would appreciate and enjoy. If its wht u want, then go for it. If they r ur friends, they shd accept u and ur tradition. If u explain to them the reason behind the veg food, definately they would accept. Is the Chinese goin to stop serving suckling pig jus becos non-chinese are attending their wedding dinner? So y shd we bend our beliefs jus to suit others?

hey lisa...i really wanted my wedding in a temple also but couldnt get a temple big enough to fit my humonguous guest list so we went ahead with khalsa...and i do agree with the rest abt non-indians attending indian weddings...they really get excited by it if its in the temple or elsewhere and my friends also got me to bring them shopping for traditional suits so that they can wear that and come...so ya dont be too worried abt that...

and as for the engagement...i feel it was a total waste of time for me...cos my finace proposed to me, after that we had our rom and THEN my parents and his insisted that we should have an engagement (after we are legally married) and the silliest part of that was the priest actually asked us to take out our wedding rings, drop it into a plate so that he could bless it and then he asked us to exchange it and asked everyone to clap!!! total waste of time i would say for me since the sequence of events was so weird!

hi everyone!

thanks so much for ur valuable input!! means a lot to me when pple i have never met b4 actually take the time to give me their 2 cents worth.. thanks guys
happy.gif

Kayla: thanks gal for ur explanation. think mine will be parasam then not nitchayam. will ur wedding banquet at the OCC be held in the ballroom? i read that its v big n can hold min 40 tables.

notredame: yeah i think i shd consider having it at a temple too. n yeah i read about sam ong too! apparently he is really good. thinking of using him for my PS.

sphire: im feeling better now gal thanks. yeah i totally agree w u on the part about the chinese n the suckling pig.. hehe. thanks 4 ur feedback. makes a lot of sense
happy.gif

infinite: yeah think i will consider the number of pple too. cos too crowded also not good, then there will be like super long queue for food

infinite - wow.. tht sounds kinda cute. Consider it as a blessing.

Lisa - the OCC cocktail area is as big as some hotel ballrooms. ITs really beautiful.

hi ladies,

Lisa - Glad to hear you are feeling better. Like what all the others said, go ahead and have your wedding at the temple. Your non-indian friends will definitely appreciate the experience.

Jini- Thanks for the details of the MUA. All the best for your ROM. M sure everything will go beautifully.

notredame - What are Sam Ong's charges like?

Notredame - glad you found an MUA you like. he does sound very thorough in his trial i.e discussing colours and outfits that would suit you. Can I ask what his charges are like?

Lisa - Agree with the rest. Unless your friends have already expressed their concerns (which I still think shouldn't stop you - it's your wedding afterall), they are bound to enjoy the experience, believe me. I will have a fair number of non-Indian guests too so what we're doing is a temple programme explaining the different segments of the ceremony. This might help them understand what's going on on stage. If not, they can use the programme to fan themselves when it gets hot and stuffy. ;)

Kayla - I guess I'm worse off than your FH. I haven't even seen a parasam in tamil movies!! Hee!

Everyone - Does anyone have a JP to recommend? Someone with a real passion for what he does, a sense of humour and who's not so clinical in the way he solemnises weddings preferred. I know, tall order. ;) We have to book a JP before filing our solemnisation online right?

Sam Ong charges $500 for a 4-hour photoshoot, inclusive of a trial. I think it's really worth it, he favours hairstyles that have soft curls, more romantic kinda thing

Shanthi told me her PS charges start at $300, she wasn't really specific about how her charging works though. Prob she adds $100 for each outfit like i read somewhere...

There was another guy I spoke to Eric Tan, whom my photographer also recommended - he charges $450 for the same.

hey PB...hats off to you gal...2 years...i always thought i wont cry at my wedding cos ill be happy to enter my new house and excited to start my life together as a married couple...but looks like i have to stay with in-laws and i really think i'll end up crying
sad.gif
(they are nice people and all...but just the thought of starting my married life in a small room with hardly any space for me and with in laws opposite room and brother in law next room makes me really miserable....) i already miss my family thinking abt it...

Hey Rany, if you ever get a good JP please recommend to me too.. need to find one for my ROM too.. thanks

And Lisa.. i'm doing the same as what Rany said.. preparing a programme for the non-sikhs so they know whats going on during the ceremony rather than sitting there lost. its brilliant..

Also, went to see the expo on fri and viewed Saheli's booth. Its the same stuff as that on her website but she had this beautiful dias that she rents out. seems she even does deco but i personally found it pricy. $2000 for the dias and $5000 for hall deco...

Spoke to her for a bit and she seemed really nice and willing to accomodate my needs. As i need to have my hair covered during the religious ceremony and want her to stay around to help me remove it and redo my hair for after. Am going for the trial in Dec so will let you guys know then.

Chick, did u get a chance to go then?
Also found another indian flower shop if anyones intrested...

cheers

Hi Kismet..Nope din go down.. was bit lazy..What are her charges like?

Rany - great idea to do a booklet..share when u hv a draft yeah, that will be helpful for me n other non-hindu guests..hehe..As for JP, i think i'll just use one of the temple priests..Are u planning to do it on the same day as temple wedding ie does he need to be Indian?

Hi all, is been a while since i came here. Im ok....busy with uni stuff. Married life is good but missing hubby alot on weekdays. So much so that am thinking of staying with hubby in new house that he has bought and driving into to uni everyday. The only catch is that it is a 1hour plus drive each way. But will be worth it if we can see each other everyday in the privicy of our own space.
INFINITE: THANK goodness I passed my driving last year.....at least I might be able to do this.I miss u guys lots and will send u pics of this new house. wish me luck on my driving escapades.

MABEL: Do you check ur email gal? been sending u mails but no response...which email add do u check most regularly?
that's good gal...so when are u moving into new house...and are u getting a new car as well? and don't become a racequeen there ok

hi ladies,

The JP I used is a sikh gentleman. I know he does solemnisations for other couples too, not necessarily sikhs only. I must say that the way he did the ceremony was beautiful. He added a lot of meaningful stuff so that the ceremony's like not over in all of 8 mins!! We even wrote our own vows which i tot was great and the guests only had compliments for the way the ceremony went. If anyone wants his contact, let me know.

PB - Yes pls! I'm planning to go to Delhi, would love to know where you got all your stuff from. Need to buy lehengas for my wedding. And the prices of stuff etc. Btw, where didja stay in Delhi? Did u stay with relatives? Didja hire a car or relied on the local taxis?

Hi everyone!

Chick and everyone - can temple priests do solemnisations?? I thought they need to be listed on the ROM website to do solemnisations. Chick, yup, I'm planning to do it right after the temple ceremony while still in the hall and (hopefully) with everyone still seated. Actually, the CEO of the temple we've booked does solemnisations but my mother doesn't want her for ours. So just to accommodate her whims and fancys we have to go looking for another JP! Grrrr!!! But no the JP doesn't need to be Indian although I hope he/she doesn't mind solemnising the marriage in a temple hall.

SK - Your JP sounds like he made your day extra special.
happy.gif
Not sure if he'll mind solemnising at an Indian temple. Can email me his contact too? [email protected]. Thanks muchly.

Kismet - Sure, if I get any leads on JPs, I'll share them. Meantime, I read in the other threads there's this gentleman called Brother Emmanuel (Mr Gaudette Pierre Paul) but if you're Catholic, he won't do a solemnisation because as a Catholic priest he advocates Catholics get married in a church. If you're a non-Catholic, then no problem. My reservation is his age though. I read he's in his 70s. I don't want to book him then later he not feeling well then how???

Chick - Sure, will share draft of programme once ready. Actually, I'll need some help to clarify the order of the programme too. I'm just utterly clueless!!

PB - Sorry to hear abt the hair. Can your MUA do hair extensions?? Eh, I wouldn't worry about the JB bridals lah. No offence and it's just a personal taste, but I saw the pictures of the couples in the paper and quite frankly I think the photographers at the BSs here do a better job. It doesn't matter that they went to Sarawak or wherever to do their shoot because I think Singapore offers a great number of scenery too. Just have to know where. As for the issue of house-maid, make yourself scarce. Don't be around the house too much. ;)

Mabel - Great to hear you're doing well!!! 1 hour plus each way is a long drive but hey, if that means more time with the hubby, then go for it!! Your classes are not full-days are they??

hi ladies,

kismet - may i know what sort of info you are including in your programme for non-sikhs? Will probably have a few non-sikhs attending my wedding too.

hey SK... was gonna get the translation of the lava, the significance of each round, the significance of covering hair and a brief summarry on sikhism.. was also considering looking into explaining the ardas, hmmm but not too sure abt that.. getting my sis to do the programme..

hey all,

haven't posted 4 awhile......been a busy but productive wkend.....bought all the sarees for immediate family membs.....choosing 8 sarees was a real feat....with different women wanting different things........if anyone of u was at stylemart on sunday, the the noisest bunch there was us!!

also got the venue finalised.....tho' the coordinator double booked the date we actually wanted but managed to salvage situation by bringing forward by 1 day.....

keeping fingers crossed tat watever cld go wrong had already gone wrong all else will be breeze now onwards.....yeah rite.....

can't wait to strike off more stuff on my to-do list....

hope u gals are making good progress as welll....

ps. anyone know where can i find simple nice bridal dupattas (in light pink)??? saw a few a stylemart but it's like 400+ bucks per piece.....only gonna wear it for an hour max....

Hi Puffzpooh,
I have the details with me in Singapore...will email u when i get back dear...probably in nov or dec...
Hi Mabel,
Wow! 1 hour drive...Driving in London is so difficult since the roads are super narrow and parking space is quite limited...an auto-car is a must! BTW which part of london are u intending to stay at dear? All the best for yr new house!

Hello ladies,

Ok i'm trying to catch up with you gals...but so busy. Btw last minute trip to India so hope to get some shopping done. Only for the festive break. Hope business is running the weekend of Diwali & Eid.

Well i'm going to Amritsar....hope it's great for shopping. Anyone been there...any advise. Leaving in a day. Phew wat a rush but i dun mind!!!

Hi Apryl Bride, i've been to Amritsar but it was a one day trip to visit Golden Temple. My friend who lives there told me there aren't alot of shopping stuff though.
Have a good trip anyways...

Hey SK - Thanks muchly for your mail! Appreciate it!

Reena - Wow! That's a whole lot of progress for just a couple of weeks. No matter how hard i wish and pray, my mother is never that organised.

Apryl - Have a good trip!

Hey Holly & Rany thank you so much for your wishes. I'll see wat i can grab and yes the Golden Temple is the main stop for me.

I'll pray for all you gals here k that our weddings just turn out perfect as we've dreamed.

See you guys soon. Pls keep me updated plus if there's any info to share just mail it to me without me asking. Be my guest to fill my mailbox.

[email protected]

hi ladies,

Rany - You're welcome, girl!

Apryl - Not sure about shopping in Amritsar. Isn't there anyway you could make a stop in Delhi? Its supposed to be the best place to shop. Anyway, have a good and safe trip!

HI Ladies

Catching up here. Been tied up.

Rany - the programme sheet sound great. I was thinkin of tht too.

Apryl- Enjoy ur trip gal.

Reena - Congrats on ur settlements.

Mi goin for gown selection this Mon. Wanted to book Shanti for trial but she said already occupied till end of yr. Got to call her in Jan again. Ok gtg. Take care ladies. Happy Deepa-Raya.

Hey ladies

Holly - Then u shd start the trend in Cali. Get everyone geared up and liven up the mood...kekeke

Went to YC for gown selection on Monday. Was not allowed to take pics.. so got nothing to show. Tried 10gowns at least. Liked some details of some gowns, din like some. Some gowns looked to fraly and some too plain. In the end decided to MTM. Combined 4 gown details. Material, embroidery, train and sleeves. The gown looks a little victorian now which I've always wanted. Crossing my fingers and hoping its really wht I want.

i have a saree and a punjabi suit here with me..hoping i'd get an opportunity to wear it but i have no indian friends here...so really weird to wear it alone.

Most indians are based in San Jose Area( the silicon valley) so the diwali there is BIG!!

ooh, Victorian gown sounds really nice. Is it bustier type?

hi gals...thought of printing a programme for my non-hindu colleagues for the hindu wedding? any ideas or tips on what to include...checked the websites and they seem different from what we carry out in singapore..anyone has info abt the meaning behind the rituals we do? thanks!

Holly - kekkeke... my gown looks somewhat victorian but its not really.
U shd wear ur saree and invite ur friends over to ur plc for diwali. At least u could let them feel whts diwali is. They would definately enjoy themselves and appreciate it.

Infinite - Considering the programme sheet as well. But hvnt start sourcing.

Hey girls! Hope your Deepavali and Hari Raya were special!! I am suffering from pineapple tart deficiency. Need more!!

Holly - agree with Sphire. Get the ball rolling and share the culture with everyone there. Also a great excuse to wear the saree and punjabi suit! ;)

Chick, Infinite, Sphire - you've got mail!

Btw, learnt that I won't need to engage an external JP to officiate our marriage because according to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (which is where we're doing it right after the temple ceremony), the CEO of the temple who also happens to be a JP will do it for us. External JPs not allowed. My mother has no choice but to deal with it. Yay for me! Hahaha!

Sphire - That's cool that you're getting your gown MTM. Need to top up? Btw, can I chk if you've seen a short lace outfit at YC when you were there?

It's the third outfit from the left on this link (you need to scroll down)

http://www.singaporebrides.com/forumboard/messages/1/306.html?1161526829

Wld you know how much it costs? I'm thinking of renting it for the banquet - as in wearing it throughout the banquet. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?

deepa raya wishes to all!!!

wat a drag to be back at work......the 5-day break just flew past too quickly....all that's left is mountain of work waiting......sigh!!!

holly - u shld take this chance to organize a house party 4 ur frenz there....u could start an annual pilgrimage thingy...u know..hehehhe...;-)

rany - hmmm......that dress looks swell.....esp. from back view....i think it shld be fine 4 u to wear 4 the banquet....as long as u don't have conservative tongue-wagging relatives in ur guest list....hehehhe......so my take is: GO FOR IT

sphire - how exciting!! when wld u get a first look at ur gown? bet u can't wait....hopefully u can share some pics then.....well since it's ur own n MTM, they shldn't stop u fm taking photos then...

Yup, you girls are right. I shd have arranged a party at my home..oh well..alittle too late this time. Halloween is coming up and everyone's too busy with parties and stuff. I'll arrange a good one next yr.

Rany, the lace at the back is very sexy, classy and with a great pair of white or silver stilettos will be perfect!!

It's so frustrating, my hair is getting super duper curly. I can't wait to get it rebonded once i am back. I have like a whole list of stuff to do ..so excited..counting down my days...hehehe..

Rany - hvnt checked my email. But hey! Thanks for the mailer. Nope! Din catch any short gowns in YC. Not sure whts the costing will be be. Sorry. Only saw WGs... lots of them. Me dont need to top-up for to MTM as it was already in my package.

Reena - Cnt wait to look at my gown. Yvonne said she'll call mi in Dec. Excited and scared. Wht if the gown itsnt wht I want? Cn I replace with OTR?

Holly - enjoy ur curls lady. I'm thinking of curling mine...kekeke

Hey Rany...Thanks Gal..the programme stuff is really useful even for me..hehe..The dress is real SEXY yah..Hey but i thought u have a package with DiGio? The only thing is that usually banquet people wear long gown..but if u wanna trying something different, do it!!

Sphire..thats good progress, my appt with Z is 29th nov, hope i can find smtg nice!

Chick - Z has quite nice gowns too. Does ur package incl MTM? if it is, u cld combine all ur favourite elements of other gowns and design ur own.. jus as wht I did.

Rany - Now that Chick mentioned.. u only got gowns from DG rite? Y not ask them abt their ROM gowns. The short gown was YC's ROM gown. They were featured during the bridal show in Suntec.

Thanks for the programme again gal. Probably u shd try to get a Ceylonese programme. I think it'll mean more to you if ur rituals are done in ur family line.
