hey everyone!

Mabel, just let us know if you need any contacts. we'll try to help you as much as possible. erm...although, i have to admit, i'm not the best person to ask because i haven't quite got in touch with anyone other than to ask for quotes. i've been ignored on some occasions. on others, we've been lucky to be entertained. ;)

Could you send me your wedding day pics too? I'd really love to have a look at them. My email addy is [email protected]. Thanks heaps!!

So how have you planned your big day? Will it be a temple wedding and then a dinner banquet the next day? Which temple and dinner venue have you settled on? I must say, it's really challenging trying to do this from Australia while your fiance is in the UK. At least, you've managed to get those settled.
happy.gif

So take it easy, girl, and like Holly said, take things one step at a time. and try to enjoy the whole process of planning for your wedding.

That's what I remind myself to do everytime my mother annoys me by insisting on her own ideas of what she wants our wedding to be like....

Hey Holly,

Can i have Shanti's contact too? I'll check with her if she does independent assignments. Btw, did she also do your make up on your AD?

Hahaha! It's really funny but I do think everything else about a ceylonese wedding is similar to an indian wedding. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention. Hee! Guess I'm paying for it now.

Mabel and Bridezilla, I might just have to bug you with the order of the ceremonial rites you'll have at your wedding. Of course I'll keep my questions till after your wedding. Erm..will you entertain my questions of the how-tos of a Ceylonese temple wedding?? No matter how obtuse they may be???

Eternally grateful.

Rany: I will of course be delighted to help you with whatever questions you have once I figure it out. Us Brides MUST Stick Together. I am so suprised at how little help and info exists for us out there. My wedding is only in august, so u have a long wait yet!
happy.gif

So far ,the plans are temple wedding only. We are having the reception later on in the UK. I have alot of stuff to handle when I get there too like enrolling in my new med school and settling. So just the wedding for now. Its more than enough for me!!
Ill be calling my fiance's cousin at some stage in the next two weeks when Im back in Singapore to ask her about wedding details. So Ill let u know what I find out.

So far...i know the
1)bride wears a veil
sad.gif

2)The groom wears a turban type thingy,
3) There is a ponnuruku done by the grooms side for the thali ( i dont think the indian wedding has this.
This is the extent of my knowledge.I Should have spent less time with nose in books and more time going to weddings. They dont teach us stuff like this in school.
Im thinking of starting to my own bolg somewhere to put up the info i find and my experience to help other brides in future. what do u girls reckon? worthwhile effort?

Hey Holly.. thanks gal for the mails. Ur VG package seems very reasonable. Will contact both Shanti and ur VG once my date is confirmed.

Great that u girls are starting a blog. It'll be really useful for we BTB and future ones. Lookin forward to login to ur blogs.

Dear Bridezilla,

As you can tell, the whole veil affair is a very contentious topic on this forum. I saw that u mentioned in your earlier post that your cousins wore them and looked good. Would it be ok if you could find out where they got their veils...ie if it was ready made or made specially and which shop they would recommend? Thanks soo much

As for the blog......Im still working on it!

Hey chicks!

A blog?? I was thinking the very same thing!!! But I have a confession. I'm Miss Lazy Bones. And I hop from one project to another when I lose interest. So I don't know if I'll have the patience to maintain a blog but we'll see.

In the meantime, to answer Mabel's question, yes girl, it's definitely worthwhile to start one!!! So Holly and Mabel, I for one will definitely be keeping my eyes open for your blogs!
happy.gif

Holly, thanks heaps for Shanti's contact no.! I'll get in touch with her in the next few weeks.

And Mabel, thanks so much for agreeing to entertain my potential questions!! Already I have two. Heh! What is a ponnuruku??? And does the groom really have to wear a turban thingy??? My fiance will fall off his chair when I tell him, I'm sure. Heh!

So apart from the groom, there will be other men in the entourage wearing the turban thingy too?

Sphire, there's The Wedding Fair at Suntec from 27-29th May. Maybe you'd want to check it out for banquet venues? Not sure if Hyatt might have any promotions going there though.

mabel25

Rany : Hey...ive answered ur first question on my blog already! If u have any more questions can leave me messages on the tag board!!

And yes...the groom wears a turban (its only fair cos the bride has to wear a veil!) and so does the best man. I dont think anyone else has too!

Mabel,

I just remembered you asked for leads on wedding invitations. I came across this website by Sri Murugan Wedding Services: http://members.tripod.com/srimurugan/

Hope it helps. But I reckon you'll probably be able to find heaps more of these sorta companies in Little India. I'll ask around and let you know if I hear of anything more.

Hi Girls!

wow.. this thread is on overdrive : ) Lots to reply to..I'll try and reply to all
happy.gif

Mabel, First things first, ,great idea! I'll let you know if I have anything to add!

Re:weding in Auguest... you know I know I'll be in the eaxct same boat as you 3 months before the wedding not having done anything. So girlfriend I empathise. But on the bright side, August is not wedding seasons especially for the Chinese so I don't think it will be too hard to get your vendors. Just really a matter of finding one you like. My problem is November is such a hot month for chinese weddings, most vendors are already booked up. I still can't find myself a VG!

Re veil, I haven't decided where to get mine from. I know Menaka and Rupini provide veils. Shanti doesn't. If you are going for a bridal package, I thnk you can get it from the BS. My cousins either borrowed from friends or from the MUA.

Re turban, My fiance who is not ceylonese refuses to wear one. I'm just like whatever..

Re Shanti, She freelances so you don't have to buy from stylemart to use her.

Re Hilarion, one of my friends used him at her wedding. Pictures were nice and he's such a funny guy. He's got a really uncanny resemblence to that funny chinese actor, can't for the life of me remember his name at the moment..

Rany, I've been to Vansh. Its very cozy : ) What's their package like?

I haven't bought my saree colour yet, but was thinking of gold.

BRIDEZILLA: was the wedding u attended with Hilarion in Dec last year? Wont it be funny if we actually knew each other? the world is getting smaller.

Hi Rany. Thanks for the info. But not sure if the wedding fair will have banquets... I think its more of BS. My fiance and I are either settling for Hyatt or Raffles Town Club. Both will most prob have their Bridal Show either in Aug or Sep. My intended date is in Sept 07. Would it be too late to sign then? Heard its a hot month for the chinese.

Hey Mable.. that's fast lady. Will check out ur blog.

Mabel, the wedding that I went to that Hilarion covered was the year before... but it is a small world!

I'm on sick leave today with a wisdom tooth infection (*ulp*)

Hey.. what are you girls wearing to your reception?

Hi Bridezilla. Poor girl. It must be really hurting. I suffered last year. Needed to go for surgery.. but till now havnt.

I'll be wearing WG and Gagara.

When I have my reception later on, I want to wear one of those north indian sarees: the organza type ones with sequins. I know they cost thousands of dollars but at least I have time to save for it. Or at least my fiance does

I just got it extracted... such misery
sad.gif

I'm going to get a lengah. Was contemplating changing into an evening gown if I find one i like But I also want to enjoy the reception with the guests and not in the hotel room changing so wondering if I should....

I can't believe that I've just logged on to this thread despite the excruciating pain I'm in. At times like this I really wish my FH was here to hold my hand. Long distance is hard!

Mabel, where's your gown from?

Holly, not sure if I told you, I really really like your dress! Where is it from? Did you buy or rent?

mabel25

Hi Bridezilla, Hope u are feeling better. I can emapathize. When I was 17, I had to had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extreacted because I had braces and there was no place for them to come up. So i had to endure this gruesome extraction because the wisdom teeth were still under the gum. The worst part??? I had to endure all of this under LOCAL anaesthesia.
Im not wearing a gown. I think Im too skinny
sad.gif
So I'm just sticking to saree all the way. Just various styles and versions of it.

sphire80

New Member
OHHH! That sounds painful, Mabel. It sounds great.. various sarees. But I always thought sarees look better on a slightly flashy lady.

Bridezilla, hope u get well soon. Where did u get ur lengah from? Wht the price range for a bridal lengah?

theaprilwedding

New Member
Bridezilla,

Ouchie!! I hope you're feeling much much better today. I had mine extracted last year I think and my dentist asked if I wanted to keep my tooth...erm...for keepsake I guess. And I grinned and said yes. Hee!

But yes, long distance is hard. Phone chats don't quite do it. I know what you're going through, girl. But you know what, you can start counting down to when you'll be together again. I know I am!!!

The package at Vansh seems reasonable and they seem to be able to accept my numbers (approx 250pax for buffet style). They've quoted 30nett for lunch and 45nett for dinner. I haven't been to the place and I'm just going by reviews I've read of the food and pictures on the website of its uber-cool decor. So my fiance and I are going to have to go down personally for a better feel of the place and discuss in detail the arrangements with them if we decide to use them.

The other option we have in mind is Little Bali but we haven't been in touch with them yet so we don't really know what their packages are like.

Oh Bridezilla, so sorry to hear abt your pain..wishing u speedy recovery ya!!
I guess you are talking abt my EG right? I bought that dress from Sunny Ang Boutique, in fact i got it madetomeasure. It's actually my design. I've always wanted a cheongsum collar with an empire cut flowy dress.

Mabel, sarees nowadays are just gorgeous..especially with all the cutest blouse designs!!
Hey, what are your plans after the wedding?? Are you going to be with ur hubby in UK?

theaprilwedding

New Member
Mabel,

Thanks for clarifying about the turbans!

You're not skinny!! I've seen that photo of you and your FH on your blog and you look fine, my dear!!

Actually, I do agree with Sphire about sarees being more kind to women who've got curves. Unfortunately, I'm tomboyish thin. Runway thin. Just don't have runway looks. hahahah! I keep telling myself, I have a year thereabouts to stuff my face.
happy.gif

Although I won't be wearing a gown on my AD or at the banquet, I still want to slip into one for the pre-wedding photoshoot.

Anyhow, I'm not quite sure what you mean by a north indian saree. Is that like a lengha with a duppatta over the head? Like those pictured at the bottom of the page?
http://www.yourdreamshaadi.co.uk/fashion.htm

And btw, girls, what's the difference between a lengha and a ghagrah?

Absolutely clueless.....

theaprilwedding

New Member
Sphire,

Apologies but I'm not quite sure if signing up in August and Sept this year would be too late. Again, absolutely clueless.

I guess you can always do abit of checking now to see if it's filling up really quickly for Sept 2007 and then make a tentative booking (if that's at all possible) for the date you want. And then at the show in Aug/Sept, you can confirm your booking. In other words, play for time.
happy.gif

Sounds very ideal but I'm not sure if Hyatt and RTC entertain tentative bookings.

Hey, has anyone tried facials and back-scrubs at Rupini's??

I have acne-scars on both face (I guess the veil could prove useful afterall! heh!) and back but I'm just dying to wear a backless gown!!!

Rany, are you acne's really bad?? Reason for asking is becos, i had absolutely the worst acnes in my life..i was so much in desperation..had low confidence until i finally went to visit a dermatologist at Orchard Building. Dr Thiru is from Specialist skin clinic and he recommended me to start on Roaccutane. I've heard that it's very toxic and u're also not supposed to get pregnant while consuming this mediciation but i must say it works!! My skin's flawless now and am trying to maintain it..
If ur's isn't as serious than, ignore my suggestion.

Hey Girls,
Wow, loads to reply to.
HOLLY: MY plans after the wedding? Im going to the UK to be with him. Actually, Im having to even transfer medical schools to be with him. I am in Med school in Aust and my original plans were to graduate here and then join him. I would have graduated this year but last year, I had to take the whole year off to look after my father in singapore who has cancer. So that has really changed my life. Taught me that often we plan for the future and put off things when we should be cherishing every moment with the ones we love. So instead of waiting 2 or 3 years to be together, we decided i wold try and apply for a transfer. In April this year, I went to UK for the interview, and I got the place! I didnt think I would becuase medical schools rarely ever accept transfers. Ok I dont know why Im boring u guys with all of this. Its just that I understand the pain of long distance. My partner and I have managed this for 6 long years now.

RANY:I am skinny onlay my face is fat!hahahahah. It is my mother in laws aim in life to fatten me up
happy.gif
Well, if u are trying to gain weight, the one thing I can recommend is ENSURE milk. It works wonders for me.
And acne, yes, Ive battled it my whole life and now it is less severe but still there at times. What I can recommend in Thereaputic AHA oily and acne solution 8. They ONLY sell it in hospital Pharmacies. Their products are brilliant...brilliant. They never advertise. Its word of mouth. Im also trying other stuff so Ill use it awahile and put it on my blog about how it works! Ok?

Hi Mabel.. Sorry to hear abt ur dad. Its true.. it always sound practical to do 1 thing at a time. But some times its much better otherwise. It must be really hard on you planning for your wedding in different parts. It will all be beautiful memories when you think back a couple of years later.

Hey Rany.. Lengah and gagarah... I guess they're the same. The link u post is useful.. kekekeke. I'm lookin for a lengah blouse design for my banquet.
At first I quite liked Little Bali.. but my fiance doesnt. So quit the idea. I really like the bali concept.

Hi girls!

I'm in not as much pain as last night! Thanks for the well-wishes.

BTW, i've just been in touch with the wedding paparazi (www.weddingpaparazi.com) and they've done a ceylonese wedding. Their style is what i'd describe as quirky and the background music is in English but all in all, quite nice. A little expensive though..Especially since I didn't want a VG in the first place and honestly how many times will i end up watching it...But my mum wants a VG and everyone i've called is booked up so we'll see.Anyway, thought you guys might be interested..

Mabel, you had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed n LA???!!!!And you've done long distance for 6 years???!!!!!Respect.

I'm planning to get my lengah in September, that way I won't have time to change my mind : )I like the white ensemble in the stylemart ads in the bridal mags. Although when we went to see it, my dad thought it looked decidedly used.

Rany, have you seen a dermatologist? My friends who've had acne on their backs tell me its curable with medication.

Bridezilla... Thnak for the mail. Wow! the price is real steep. I only need 1/2 day VG probably I'll check with them their quote for 1/2day. Thanks again.

Hey guys!

Whoa!! This forum is really rolling, innit??

Thanks guys for your tips and tricks on beating acne. I won't say my condition is really bad, it's just that after a pimple or two has popped (happens usually), it leaves a dark spot/scar on my skin and that just takes ages to go away.

Holly, I read (in horror!!) the many side-effects of Roaccutane. Amongst which, depression, dry skin and lips, no exposure to strong sunlight, no waxing for six months during and after treatment ends (I really cannot cannot go w/o this!!), inflammatory bowel disorders, hair loss, eye problems, headaches, nausea etc. I have to say, you were a brave, brave girl taking it!!

Did you have any side-effects? How long were you on it for?? And you don't have to be on it now to maintain your skin appearance?? Does the problem recurr a while after you've finished treatment??

But acne treatments aside, how are you doing in LA? Have you made new friends?

Hey Mabel,

I'm really sorry to hear about your dad too. Is he coping OK with the cancer now? I hope he has been responding to treatment well. If the questions are too personal, you can ignore them really. I understand.

Yes, I do agree that these things can't wait. 6 years is a long time to have a long-distance relationship. Is your fiance studying in UK too? I have a friend who did it for 6 years too, after being with him for 2 years during school time in Australia. They're now married and enjoying their life together as a couple in Victoria.

And thanks too for the link to Therapeutic. Do you know if they have these at the hospital pharmacies in Singapore? Do you need a prescription to buy these?

Hey Sphire,

I love the Bali concept too!!! Did you find Little Bali big enough for a banquet? Like did they have enough chairs and lounges for guests or would you have to bring in more?

And Bridezilla,

I really like that picture you posted of the lengha!! Very sleek!! I imagine with the beadwork on that thing, it could set a girl (or her fiance! hahah!!) back by $1500 at least.

And The Wedding Paparazzi is really interesting!! We're not really all that keen on a VG but watching that sample video of Getty and Eleanor has got me thinking about it again. Hee! And did you guys see that car???? I LOVE VINTAGE!!! Dresses, jewellery, wallpaper, cars, camera, anything!!! In fact, I had my fiance looking high and low for an Edwardian engagement ring for me but he found out with a proper diamond as a centrestone, it would set him back by about $10,000. So we've looked at our bank accounts and decided a simple ring will do. *grin*

Anyway, anyone knows where you could rent a car like that????

hi girls,

bridezilla, oh..u mean my wedding gown?? It's MTM by The Wedding Present, it's a 2 piece mermaid cut gown and plus i requested them to design a short puffed skirt as well for tea reception.

Rany, no lah....i din get any of those side-effects ( *touchwood*), i only had dry skin ..waxing was fine with me..had no such problems. i took this med in 1998 but had a relapse last yr June cos i was in the states for a mth and it was summer, hot and super DRY...so i tot i shd get a Dry skin moisturiser...but DARN...that was A BIG MIstake..i starting popping out acnes again..so i took it again before my wedding this yr.

LA is ok...summer is hitting in...getting damn hot and dry....yea..just have a few friends..they are actually my husband's buddies girls...so get to hang with them alittle.

I am going to Arizona this weekend to visit my cousins for memorial day PH. Will check out this website when i get back on Tues.

Take care girls and have a good weekend!!

Rany: My dad is ok for now. The tumour is still there and he is on chemo pretty much constantly since he was diagnosed last march. It has been a long battle for him and all of us. It came as a shock becuase he is such a health freak:non smoker, walks a km a day, eats 5 fruit and vege a day, never ever abused his body. His bithday is in June and we are having a big party for him cos mom and I are so grateful he has reached another birthday.
Hey, I know what u mean about the dark mark that the pimple leaves after it subsides. I have that problem too. Even when I dont pick it or touch it or anything. I think we are just prone to hyper-pigmentation or something The therapeutic line is sold in Polyclinic phramacies (i know Toa Payoh and AMK polyclinic) sell it. NUH also sells it. And no u dont need a prescription for it. I used to have a real problem with forehead breakouts but their solution really helped me (touchwood)

I wanted to try Accutane too but my mom forbid me.

Holly: Have a good weekend!! sounds like fun. Ill be in Singapore the next time I read this website. home sweet home .yey

Hey you'all!

Mabel, yeah, I must say, it does come as a shock especially when someone is so healthy that way. But I'm glad your dad is doing OK. And its great that there's going to be a big party for him on his birthday. That would surely lift his spirits.

As for Therapeutic, does it fade dark spots too? I'll check them out at the polyclinics soon. Thanks, girl!

And on your blog, is that a picture of you at your ROM? Your saree looks gorgeous!! By the way, I know what you mean about wedding invites. You might have better luck walking into the stores at Little India.

Sphire, thanks for the heads up on Little Bali! I saw on their website that they've got a partnership going with Kinara North Indian Cuisine so I'm going to put it on my list of potentials. Who knows, we might take it off the list after having seen it in person. ;)

Holly, if you get to read this post when you're back, how was Arizona? Hope you had a fab time. Was there much to see and do? I hear it gets really pretty at sunset!!

mabel25

New Member
Hey,Thanks Rany, yes that pic was from my ROM last year. While I dont think that the AHA helps fade dark spots itself, it helps prevent future breakouts cos Alpha Hydroxy Acids act as an exfoliant to prevent clogging of pores. In the therapeutic line, they have a product called Vitamin C serum...it might be called "C scape". I think that may be more helpful for darkspots as vitamin C aids collagen rebuild in the skin and hence heals the pigmentation. I have not used this product myself. I use good old fair and lovely anti marks cream! Not sure how well it works but i put in on anyway. U know..placebo effect ;)

hey guys!

Sphire - sure, I'll let you know if I have any updates!

Mabel - I read your blog about the saree episode!! Geez, that woman in the store was just too much, wasn't she?? They're just too lazy to take it out from display and then put it back on in the event you don't want to buy it. Which store was this? When my friend went shopping for her wedding saree, she got great service at Diamond Palace - the guy was sooo patient and he actually was educating us on the different types of sarees/silks etc. She didn't get very personalised service at Nalli's even though there was no one else apart from us looking at their sarees. In the meantime, good luck with buying that perfect wedding saree.

Mabel.. Kewl that u got a few sarees. I've got a few when there was the Tamil New Year fair at Singapore Expo this year. This north indian lady from India sold beautiful sequines and gortic sarees. Got abt 6pc and 1 of it is meant for my engagement. After that pocket very big hole...kekeke

Which shop did u go to?

Rany, U r right. Nalli sales personnel are not very friendly and they dont take the extra effort to make customers happy. Make sure that you really check sarees when u buy from Nalli. Once I bought a green saree from there. It was on display. Really loved it. Then I brought to the tailor to get it sewn. The tailor told me that the saree had been cut and sewn together.I was shocked. Din expect this from a established saree shop. Luckily it cannot be seen once the saree is tied.
Thumbs up for Jewel Palace. Their service is really superb. The sales personnal will just keep showing u sarees and even recommend according to your budget with no obligation. Sarees are really beautiful.
Haniffa... even better. U go to the rack and take yourself. No assistance.

The shop with the bad service was sithee vinayager. Went back today to have a peep and surprise surprise.....that saree is still there on display. No one has bought it yet ,thanks to their wonderful service I suppose
