hello everyone,
Im trying to organize my wedding, and glad I chanced upon this thread!. Im looking for a good makeup artist to do my makeup for the temple ceremony. I went with Rupini for myROM, did not really like the overdone look. Does anyone know of an artist that can do SIMPLE natural makeup? It seems to be rare skill these days!.
Also can anyone advice me on video and and photographers?Who are all of you engaging for the temple ceremony? Please help me, I really would appreciate any advice. Thanks

hi mabel, i used Shanti from Stylemart for my ROM and she did a great job!! natural and yet modern...It was not at all overdone and the colour shades were perfect...

As for photographers and videographers, you can leave me ur email id so that i can email you their contacts..

Hey Thanks for that Holly, just a question about shanti, how much does she charge for the makeup hair and sari tying? my email is [email protected].
As for video and photo, im still wondering what to go for, the traditional indian photographer and video...or something a more modern. Im leaning towards the latter, but not quite sure if it will work out.

hi mabel, i just sent you 3 pics taken from my ROM for you to take a look at shanti's makeup..
I personally liked her makeup alot. Her foundation was very natural..she is very good at blending.

For my customary wedding day, I had a church wedding so i took up a modern PG instead...i engaged 2 professional PGs cos i loved both their works and it was $$ well spent. Their pics turned out great and all my family and friends loved it.

www.expressively*oho.com ( replace the * with J)
www.eye-deas.com

the above are my PGs websites. i m also in both their websites, so you might bump into them...haha..

Hello Bridezilla, i have sent you the same. 3 pics taken during my ROM. Shanti is a great choice..won't regret!!

Cheers!!

Holly, Thanks a million! You look lovely and you're right, the makeup is really natural. Only problem is she's double booked for the day so she'll only be able to do my makeup and dress me in the first saree. Her assistant will have to help with the second one. Did you have any contact with her assistant when you did yours?

My reception is at the Ritz Carlton as well. Wondering if anyone was able to negotiate for any "extras" with their package?

Hi holly, thanks so much for the photos, you look Beautiful, though Im sure thats because you really are that way even without makeup

The makeup is good too though! Just thinking back to my ROM where the makeup lady thought it was a good idea to make my face a totally different colour from the rest of my body!!!!!I can never porudly show anyone my ROM pictures because of that. what a waste.

Hey Sphire...good to hear from you...
WOW..Hyatt sounds good..go check out and let us know what you think..

I just came back from a stand up comedy show..
Heard of Russell Peters??...a really funny indian canadian who makes fun of racial stereotypes and also a master of accents and dialects..very authentic!! He was just hilarious..i laughed till my mouth actually hurts now..haha..He is the best!!

I dun tink stylemart rents dear...you got to purchase them..either of the rack or Made to measure... but do check ..maybe they have some for rent.

Hello Mabel, no lar....without the makeup..i'm very average.....the makeup was good and also when it's your big day..you kinda glow..hahaha...
I am sorry to hear that your makeup din turn out good...i can imagine how frustrating that can be..
If you dun mind, get the best shot you like and send me okie..i'd like to see....
Do try to ask for a makeup trial before confirming with any makeup artist..it's better to know what you are going to get cos this is YOUR wedding and you ought to look your best!!

Dear Sphire
Just to share my experience.. The Hyatt has one of the best, most comprehensive packages around (esp for alcohol and corkage). And the food is good. When I went to view it, i liked it but wanted to shop around because it was the first one I'd been to. By the time I got back to them to make a booking, they were practically fully booked save one room (the only one I didn't like)! And this was more than a year before my wedding date!

So the moral of the story is if you like it, don't wait too long : )

Hi Holly. Miss ya dear. Will check out on Stylemart. Find it a waste of $$ to buy gowns which I'm not going to wear after the big day. Rather use the $$ on my wedding itself. Will check out other shops also.

Hi Bridezilla. Yup. their package is fantastic. But the date is not confirmed yet.. hence cannot book also. Ah.. so sad.. but still sourcing.

Will keep you girls updated.

Hi bridezilla, i was reading past posts in this thread and realised i din reply to your qns..I am not sure abt Shanti's assistant. I engaged her for my ROM only not AD wedding so i only needed her for 1 makeup/hair and tying of saree. I have never met her assistant.

Sphire, yea..it's quite a waste ..after your big day..the gowns will be sleeping in the wardrobe.
You're shopping for your solemnization now right?? You planning something indian or modern?

sphire80

Holly, kind of getting everything in place as my Solemnization + Dinner might be brought forward to Sept 2007. Planning for a fusion atmosphere as 1/3 of my crowd is goin to be chinese and the rest indians. Rationalising the costs. Saw a kinda mordern suit in Stylemart for $400. My BS offered me 5 changes for PS. So I thought WG, EG, saree, gargara and the modern suit.. hence all my costumes would be different from each other. If it falls that way, I'll only be using WG and EG from my BS. Then could bargain more things from them. But thts provided Stylemart rents suits and the cost must be reasonable.

Hi everyone!

Like you guys, I'm so relieved I chanced upon this forum. I've googled just about everything relating to indian weddings in Singapore only to turn up dating personals in India or zilch.

So I'm just completely delighted I've found you guys at this forum!!

I'm facing pretty much the same dilemma here with the modern day Indian bride trying to achieve her big day without looking like she came out of a fashion-faux-pas wedding of the 1980s.

So any leads of how we go about with this will be greatly appreciated. We're now looking for a photographer, make-up artist who can do hair too (I have short to shoulder-length hair) and bridal studio.

The plan is to have a photoshoot with a WG and evening outfit (maybe a lengha) because we can't break out the saree until the wedding day (after it's blessed by the iyer!) So all we need from the BS is a wedding gown, suit, make-up & hair and photoshoot. But I don't want to risk the make-up and hair with just any ol' make-up artist. I'd rather go with someone who has experience with Indian skin tones.

So can I ask if you girls have had experience with having a separate make-up artist and hairstylist for your photoshoots? Would you be able to send us their contacts either thru this forum or you can reach us at [email protected].

As for photographers, I've seen Kuang's work www.39eastimages.com and I really love his style but he doesn't do packages and he's charging $325 per hour for him and his assistant both. I don't know if this is a whopping figure or if it's something typical of the industry. Any feedback, ladies?

Sphire, may I ask which bridal studio you've signed up with? And Holly, could I take a peak at your pics too??? Pretty pleeease??

Cheers!

Hi Rany

Welcome on board. When is your big day?

I've signed up with Yvonne Creative with a promotional package during a weddin fair. Before I signed with them, I did request to view indian bridal shots. quite statisfied with the MUA work. However I did told my coordinator to workout no of photos that she cn exchange if I decide not to use their MUA after the trial makeup. I did go through every lines before signing. Received quite a good package with lots of alternatives and extra perks. If I dont use the MUA from YC, I'll most prob engage Shanti from Stylemart for my banquet for a modern look. I'm confirm engaging Menaka for my Traditional wedding.
Probably u may want to hunt for Bridal studios experienced with indian couples.

Link Bridal and Golden Horse is also good plc for indians. My friend and fiance cousin took them. Photos were really good & out of the ordinary for the indian community.

Hi Rany,had same experience!

Someone should start a Wedding Planning Business for the Modern Indian Bride!Def a niche market!

$325 per hour is a lot but it also really depends on how long you expect your wedding to go on for...

Holly, I love Russell Peters!Did he do the Indian man in Chinatown routine??

hi rany, welcome welcome!! Sure, i'll send you my ROM and wedding pics so that you can have a look at Shanti's makeup. Just so you know that my ROM and customary wedding was 2 different events. I bought my saree from Style mart and MUA was Shanti. For wedding, my bridal boutque was The Wedding Present and MUA was Freddy ( he is one of the bridal shop's MUA..he is chinese and he has done Makeup for Cover magazines and models)

I agree with Bridezilla, $325 an hr is ALOT but however Kuang is supposedly one of the best so that's why he is expensive!! I'll send you links to my photographers. I had 2 PGs for my wedding day and i'm very happy with their work. We recieved lots of compliments from my relatives and friends..take a look and see if you like their style.

bridezilla, nope he din mention the chinatown routine stuff but he did lots of other accents and was teasing all races from all over..vietnam, chinese, indians, ..arabs..hahahaha..i love him..he is so funny man!! oh..just so you know, he was telling us that he is going to retire on that "SOMEBODY is going to get hurt real bad" joke...cos he has used it too many times.

Hey chicks!

Thanks heaps for the quick replies!

Well, we're waiting for an auspicious date from Mr Iyer. But we're hoping for something in April or May next year.
happy.gif

So Sphire, does Yvonne Creative and Link Bridal have websites? I tried to google them but no luck. When you suggested Link and Goldenhorse (wah, sound damn Hong Kong Oscars type thing!), were you talking about just photography or the whole package including gowns?

Holly, thanks heaps for the photos, the links and the figures. Really appreciate it. And congrats to you and hubby both. The newly-weds! The pictures are fab!! You really look great. Very nicely done. I see you like monochrome. It has a very timeless feel about it. Can I ask how much you spent on Ron for photography? And what about Joho? Could you share with us what the package covered?

Btw, I'm with Bridezilla. Russell Peters is a riot. My favourite was when he poked fun at the Italians and Indians both. Superrrrb!!! In fact, I saved the attachment so if anyone wants to relive the moment, just holler.

Cheers!

Hi Sphire, I booked my package with them last year. My wedding coordinator was telling me that they were raising their prices by quite a bit this year. One of the bridal mags i was flipping today quoted their rate as between $938+++ and $1438+++. Might be a good idea to get in touch with them and find out.

Hey everyone!

Thanks for the links, Sphire! Very useful, indeed! I read on other postings that Yvonne Creative has got great service. So I'll definitely add that to my options!
happy.gif

I also found out there's a Golden Horse branch at Yishun (where I'm staying) so I might consider that too. Although, I must say, some of the threads I've read about GHA weren't very good. There were conflicting feedback about the service from the Tampines branch and Yishun branch. And some couples got good service whereas other's didn't. So, this needs further investigation.

Btw, this OTR and MTM phrasing is just confusing me to bits. If you girls know, how is OTR and MTM different from each other?

From what I understand, OTR is you take a pre-existing design, make a couple of alterations to suit your frame and then rent it out for your photoshoot and wedding. Afterwhich, you return it.

MTM is where you tell them how you'd like your outfit/gown to look like, they do it up for you. At the end of it, they could either keep it or you can purchase it. Is that right??

So what happens with the guys? If a suit is OTR, it's a pre-existing suit taken off the racks and alterations are made??

Does anyone know what the price difference usually is between an OTR suit and a tailor-made one from let's say Kingsmen or National Tailor? Because if the difference is not too great, my fiance would like to keep his so he can use it for his work whenever the need rises.

Hi bridezilla. Thanks for the info. I've got in touch with Ritz. They quoted $938+++. Found food not as fantastic as Hyatt.

Hi Rany. Happy that my info is helpful to you. My friend who used GH is very pleased with their service and even rec mi. But I told her that I've signed with YC. Factors to look at is service and also the type of gown designs. Each BS speacialise is diff gown design. U r right abt OTR and MTM. OTR=off the rack; MTM=made to measure. For the man suit, u can try to tok out a price with them. Alternatively you could go to far east.

Hi Sphire, thanks for clarifying.

I had a friend who held her reception at the Hyatt and I must say, I quite like the decor of the room. It wasn't the usually boring, paisely prints that you find in the function rooms of many hotels here. The curtain draws were in a lush and lavish fabric and backdrop for the centrestage was the same too, only i think it was a deep purplish-red. Very tastefully done, very sleek, very nice!!

Btw, is anyone going thru the customary indian temple wedding? Can I ask:

- who walks infront of the groom as he walks down the aisle of the temple hall (family only? friends? need they be married or single? does it matter??)

- who walks infront of the bride as she walks down the aisle of the temple hall (again, is this only family? can they be friends? single or married???)

- other than the Thali, does the groom have to buy gold bangles for the bride??

As you can see, I'm clueless about these things and everything I know about indian weddings is from what I've observed when I go to any. Hee!

I managed to look up some threads about men's suits and they say that there's a really good one at Peninsula Shopping Centre on Level 3 called Personality Menshop and they do really good suits (with great service) starting from $300.

Hi Rany

As from my observation, There is no one to walk infront the groom and bride of the temple aisle. The best man (suppose to be bride's bro) to walk beside groom and bridesmaid (groom's sis) to walk with bride.

As for gold, my mum did tell me that my in-laws has to buy for the bride. My MIL did buy a ugly bangle for mi... and she refuse to change it. HAI!
Peninsula does have a few shops. Check them out.

Hey Sphire!

Erm...sorry to here you ended up with an ugly bangle from the MIL. ;)

As for PGs, are you talking about actual day or photoshoot?

Btw, when's the big day?? I realised I hadn't asked before.

Would u hv Stylemart Shanti's contact?

Hi girls

Rany, I'm having a temple ceremony but haven't a clue about the customs and traditions. Definitely something I have to start looking into seeing as the wedding is 6 months away! Clearly I'm not as organised as the rest of you ;)

Sphire, I'm using Kelvin from Lighted Pixels for both my ceremony and reception. I really like his work and he's such a nice guy. We clicked almost immediately and my mind was made up
happy.gif

I haven't found a VG yet though so would also love some recommendations.

How's the hunt for the reception venue going? Re Ritz's menu, yes agree that the menu they sent me with the rates didn't look spectacular at first blush ... But what actually happened after our meeting was the coordinator tailored the menu according to our wants and want-nots. I'm really pleased with it now!Of course the real test is whether it ends up tasting as good on the AD!

HI Bridezilla. R u using Kelvin for ur temple ceremony as well?.. Have ur seen his portfolio on indian weddings? Could I hv his contact. If its okie with u, cld u forwrd mi his package and pricing just as guide line?.. thank you.

Still keen in Hyatt. They r hvni wedding show on 27th. Goin down to take a look. Hopw things go well.

Hi everyone!

Bridezilla, I took a look at the Lighted Pixels website and Kelvin's pics look great!! Good choice!

I don't know about VG much. We won't be doing any but Holly mentioned she used www.mirrorcreations.com (take out the second r in the word mirror). So perhaps that would help.

As for PG on wedding day, we've been in touch with Jonathan Ho from www.ExpressivelyJo*o.com (replace the * with a h). He's the same one who did Holly's AD. He says he has done a couple of Indian temple weddings. So that's a good thing because we are trying to find someone with style (and experience!!) to cover our temple wedding. ;) But we want to take a look at his portfolio of temple weddings before we decide to go with him. I don't think we'll get to do this until Aug when fiance comes up though.

But Sphire, if you're only looking for someone to shoot your dinner banquet, then you really don't have to look for someone with indian wedding experience, do you? Because won't it be in the same format as all hotel banquet dinners?

Hey, has anyone been to Vansh at Stadium Waterfront (Kallang)? We're thinking of holding our banquet there.

Sphire, sorry but I don't have Shanti's contact number. I'd like to get in touch with her too. But I was wondering, do you have to get an outfit from Stylemart in order to engage her services?? Or can you just engage her independently of a purchase from stylemart???

Bridezilla, that's you and me both clueless about wedding traditions!!! So don't worry, you're not alone.
happy.gif
I'm Ceylonese (well most of me anyhow) and my mom says I've to wear a veil at my temple wedding!!! She says its what the Ceylonese do!!! Can you believe that??? Who wears a brightly coloured sari with embroidery, stones, and splashes of gold jewellery and then as if it's like icing on a cake, a white veil????? There is a reason why the veil is white, it's because it goes with the wedding gown, not a SARI!!! Grrrr.....

Hey girls, sorry been away for awhile huh...had to read so much to get updated..

Looks like everyone has some kind of progress on the their wedding preps..good good....

Heye Rany, yea Jon and Ron both gave me MOnochrome and coloured pictures....i feel like i look better in monochrome pics....hehe..
GLad you're in touch with Jon, hopefully he has some good portfolios taken during Temple weddings.

Heye Bridezilla, Heard that Kelvin is another great PG, seen his website and like his shots too..good choice!!

THere are alot of GREAT PGs nowadays and it now boils down to your chemistry with them..becos..it's really VERY important you feel comfortable with the PG.

Have you guys heard of Fabian Lim, i've heard he is a great videographer but he is very expensive..if you girls have the budget for it..why not check him out??

Hey Sphire, sorry to hear abt the bangle ting!! NO offence girl, but maybe after the wedding.. when and if possible, you can exchange it for something else...or just keep it for memories..

Hey Shantair, how'z things with you?? Are you stil in london or back?? Come on here ya!!!

Hi guys

Sphire.. I'll pass you the contacts on Monday. Left my phone in the office(urgh!). I'm using Kelvin for the temple as well as the reception. He hasn't done any Indian weddings but I like his style enough to take the risk.

Rany, i'm ceylonese too and also have to wear the veil. the trick is to keep it really simple.Lace and rhinestones are definite no-no. My cousins actually looked quite nice in theirs. Its really about getting the look right I think.

Holly, welcome back girl! I've heard of Fabian Lim but he's not available on my dates unfortunately.

Hey guys!

Holly, welcome back! Living it up in LA? ;) I reckon you look great in both monochrome and colour. There's a pic of your flowergirl and you on Jon's enquiry page and that's in colour and it looks fab!

Btw, Holly, do you know if Shanti takes on assignments independently of Stylemart? Or is it only when you've got an outfit from Stylemart that you can engage her?

Bridezilla, noooooo, really? You're ceylonese too? Can I ask, what colour your wedding saris are going to be? There's 2 involved, isn't there? One to wear to the wedding and the other is to change into after the iyer has blessed it?I'm trying to go as neut as possible (read: beige, off-white, gold, copper) but prefer to glam it up with costume jewellery/accessories. That way, the veil won't look too out of place. Btw, where do you get the veil from???

Cheers!

Hi Mabel

It must be really tight on u. I'm sure ur family would hv taken care of some preparations for you. Probably ur cld check with MUA if they r able to lend u a veil (or r u suppose to buy?) U can take a look at bridal studios in Little india. Probably u cld get MUA, VG, PG and cards all under 1 roof. Sorry. I'm not much of a help.

Hello girls!!

wow, lot of ceylonese weddings..i've never been to one ..hopefully, when you guys get your wedding pictures ..can share share with me....

Rany, i really am not sure if she'll take you up independently. In my case, i got a saree from Stylemart and i asked them who their MUA was..and they introduced Shanti to me...however i am quite sure i rememebr her telling me during the MU trial that she does it independently. Try calling her though...

Sphire, just emailed you Shanti's contact. My VG was pretty good..we did like his express highlights and the edited full day video. Yea, he had no problems with both my PGs, in fact, they pretty much know each other after working together on other weddings. His package was decent..cheaper than Fabian or Chris Ling..I'll email the details to you as i am not sure if i can reveal them here.

Nope, i am not in contact with Shantair, i believe she is still in London....

Mabel, poor you...girl dun get too stressed..just work on it time at a time..u dun want to get burnt out and look tired on your wedding day. I can recommend a few that i shopped for during my wedding preps..( i'll email you a few VGs and PGs, their websites)..however i am not sure abt veils and temple wedding preps....
Suggest you get some girlfriends or female relatives to help you with the customary preps.

If there is anything that you need to ask, just drop a note here..and probably one of us may be able to help....
Though it's stuff...Do enjoy the wedding preps..cos it's a once in a lifetime experience and it will go by in a FLASH.......
oh..and yes i've emailed you Shanti's contact as well.

Rany, did u also wanted Shanti's contact?? din see you request so din email...let me know ya..

His name is Hilarion Goh.(I think thats how his name is spelt. As for the rest, there is nothing else I can do till till Im in Singapore next week. Ill update u'll as I go along and Post what I find here. That way...hopefully, the rest of you will get some use out of it at some stage.

Hi Holly. Thanks for the mail. Will check them out.

Mabel, do relax and get enough rest dear. I think u r handling well so far. If its mi.. I'd be freaking out. Sent mi ur photos too. Wanna knw more abt Celoynese traditions. Always thought its the indian christians that wear veil and saree together.
