Hi Everyone, I have encountered a problem and really need your advice. I am 28 this year and have worked for slightly less than 3 years (hence not much savings). I am a singaporean teochew while my wife-to-be is a cantonese hong konger who has migrated to singapore since 1991. We have known each other for almost 7 years and will be married in a few months time.Â
Recently my side had the "official dinner" to "ti Qing" with my future-in-laws. During the dinner, my in laws say they are easy-going and only asked for 2 tables since their relatives are mostly in hong kong and would not be able to come to Singapore for our wedding. They did mention their intention to host 20 tables in hong kong after our wedding but they did not mention how much they expect us to pay.
Yesterday when I go over to my wife-to-be place, her mum privately told me they require 20 tables and dowry of 30k. I know if i mention this to my parents, they will be unhappy about it. I understand in Singapore that usually the in laws will keep a small portion of the dowry and return the rest to the guy's side but I know hong konger do not do that. What should I do? Should I let my parents know what her mum told me? Or should I just give whatever I can from my savings to her and be quiet about this? I m planning to part with 12.8k of my savings as dowry, something which is still within my means after paying for my house and other wedding preparations. Â
