Dinner or HDB

Um.. I know Mr Chia personally... so no, I didn't contact him.

Anyway he mostly does for Buddhist couples and in Mandarin. I prefer someone very fluent in English.

I've found a JP! He just consented yesterday after I posted the above. *cheer* Thanks everyone, incl. those who PMed me.

Thanks Thomas! House is not really a headache... I can wait no problem. (Did I mention my HDB balloting exercise queue number was 28 and I couldn't get a flat?!)

Because at work, my projects are all happening one after another between July and Oct, I've done most of the things I need to do (invitation cards almost ready), so I can relax a bit now. Left those small small things like emcee script, ang bao box etc which won't take long.

Powder:
hur hur... your joke is so cold!!! brrrr *shiver*

I didn't end up contacting your guy because one of those I'd contacted a few days back responded and said okay. But thanks anyway! I will keep his number as backup instead mine MIA *touch wood*

touch wood lah... mine was also a last min thing, referred by frens who studied under him. not a cold joke leh... i think it's quite cool...

"my marriage was solemnised by JP Morgan"....

Coco, if a 4rm HDB resale is out of your reach now, why not look at 3rm?

One important thing in buying a resale HDB is you must have patience. You must walk away if it is not within your affordability.

I bought my 3rm resale in Bt Merah area after CNY this year, after viewing more than 40 units over a period of 4-5 months with 3 real estate agents. Good location, corner unit, high floor, near mom's flat, brother's condo and bf's office (If I fall sick he can buy me lunch and dinner haha), as well as overnight parking for non-residents (I realised that this is not the case in some estates, eg, Jln Bt Merah).

When I was asked what my budget for COV was, of course I had an internal figure but I told them it depends on whether the unit is worth the COV asked. I also let them know that I was in contact with at least one other agent. Truly, if they were not interested to entertain me I would be fine. There are plenty of real estate agents in Singapore.

My seller is a nice single lady. We have exchanged contact numbers and for anything I went direct to her, vice versa.

Powder, the closest I got to a cool-sounding JP was JP Gaudette aka Brother Emmanuel, but unfortunately he had prior commitments on that day.

Thomas: I know right? My boss suggested I write to MP (Tanjong Pagar GRC, maybe more power lol) to tell them about how I am extremely eager to but am unable to contribute to Singapore's birth rate as I have been balloting for 3 yrs (yes, really.. like I said, I can wait) and unable to get a flat.

Doll, looks like you are Thomas' and my neighbour!

I'm also looking for 3rm in this area, near to ILs.

agents who slam down phone on potential clients with low COV budget?

that's ridiculous of the agent! would such agent even last long in the industry? probably he will just be a fly-by-night operator.

in ANY type of economy it is POSSIBLE to find units with reasonable COV. for cold hard facts, you can check hdb.gov.sg for statistics on COV.

hey may,

looks like u originally had a JPG... if u took his sunglasses, it'll be valuable!

well i'll likely be putting my hdb in the mkt end of this year... the last prices were more than 520-550k... quite ridiculous, i got it for only 220k 7yrs back. am likely to be selling at valuation if can find a needy buyer... if no needy buyers then will put a cov on it.

Hey AB, I hope you will like Bt Merah. I grew up there. I have lived or stayed in other estates before but my first love is still Bt Merah.

Where does Thomas live?

Doll, I am currently staying in Bt Merah. Thomas too.

I stayed in Upper Thompson all my life before I migrated, and it was a huge change for me when I moved back to live with my fiance a few yrs ago. I had never lived in a HDB before and I remember being so claustrophobic in his 3-rm flat and couldn't get used to having people walk past the house and staring into the living room.

Now, I really really love this area. Good food, and very convenient (I don't intend to get a car because the buses go to all corners of Singapore)

Even driving to anywhere is convenient. When I use CTE, ECP, KPE, etc during drive time, there is much less traffic on my side of the expressways.

hey doll, didn't know you were my neighbour! hahaha

I also viewed many units like u over a few months...kudos to my agent too for putting up with our demands without a single complaint!

AB: haha I just moved over from Upper Thomson area too! what a coincidence...haha. Agree with u and Doll, the location here is good, go Orchard even nearer hahaha...

u wanna see Baey Yam Keng instead? Nice guy...the balloting system is rubbish lah, I gave up after donating $60 to HDB and went for resale. I really admire your patience, can ballot for 3yrs...kaoz.

Thomas: Jialut... you stalking me :P :P

I was trying to ballot for the Tanglin Halt flats (Commonwealth MRT) and also the Telok Blangah Heights BTO.. and some others. But our queue no was always 4000+ and got once, it was 7900++. So when I got no. 28, I thought sure will get a flat. Sigh.

AB, I agree that there is not much privacy living in an HDB flat especially those in slab design featuring a long common corridor. But I guess I am quite used to it as my mom's unit is along the corridor. When I was young I could hear my neighbours practising on their piano weekend mornings. I just treated it as free music haha.

wah piang...I also ballotted for the same flats! Needless to say, no luck...zzz

my friend got the Tanglin Halt unit after he ballotted for more than 3yrs...lol. He told me he almost gave up also but ended up last try he got lucky! That goes to show, never give up!!! hahaha

Telok Blangah Heights was my first ever application...my wife liked it very much but alas

Telok Blangah Heights is a very nice area! Next to the nature. I was looking at the resale at Telok Blangah Heights and Drive.....though I liked these two areas I felt the estates are too quiet for a single lady going home late at night.

Because there were only 15 or 20 flats up for grabs (those en-bloc leftovers if I remember correctly). I thought others in front of me would reject, but no such luck.

2 yrs ago, my queue number was I think 302 (around there) for 100+ flats, and yet I got an interview appointment slot, because it was Sengkang area and people didn't want it. I gave that up because it's too far away from in-laws and workplace.

doll, yeah agree...its nice but a bit quiet for my liking too. Fear more for my wife's safety than anything else.

AB: oic...no wonder, thought how come if got few hundred units why queue no. 28 can't get you a flat...lol.

Guess they were all desperate to get a flat also...did you try those leftovers under SERS? Sometimes may get lucky, u nvr know.

Don't get disheartened, I'm sure you can get a flat real soon

Thanks Thomas. SERS??

No worries lah, I've already waited so many years, can wait summore. But 2-pronged attack now - balloting AND resale. Whichever one comes first I will take, if the price is right! (sounds like a game show lol)

I have chosen a wedding lunch banquet instead of dinner banquet. Expected to make losses for the banquet, so only getting the min of 25 tables stated by the hotel. We set aside a full cost of the banquet to cater for losses if any. Spent more on my Europe honeymoon travelling to 6 cities in 3 weeks. By travelling on budget airlines, we are spending less than $3k per pax on airtickets + accomodation.

House wise, I balloted for new 4 room flat in Sengkang. No COV required and is $150k cheaper than the resale flats in that region. Cheap and good. Easier to pay off. Set aside $50k for reno + electrical appliances even though I will not spend that much.

With a tight budget in mind and lowering my expectations, I can have wedding banquet + HDB + Honeymoon without any worries.

AB: SERS = Selective En-bloc Redevelopment Scheme

those kena en-bloc, our govt will build another place for them to stay...most of the time they will build extra units, that's when they will release to the public for sale.

doll: that area very quiet...too quiet for my liking. I din bother to view units there even though they were cheaper.

cat: well done! me also had wedding lunch instead of dinner, saved quite a lot on that

Not everyone so lucky... we balloted so many times but never got a good queue number. Meaning, we get 1000+ fighting for like 200 flats? That's why no choice, have to buy resale.

But congrates to your good planning.

I think Lunch Recep is a great idea.

Luncheons are great for weddings! i dun think i ever had a bad lunch-wedding, i rem most being veyr relaxed & cordial... even those held on church premises with those long buffet queues are quite good. very relaxed n no rush to get back home!

How true!

OK, but what I don't quite understand is that wedding couples these days are not going with a more simplified wedding plans, just like CNY and other Chinese customary celebrations that get simpler and simpler by the year. Wedding seems to be the only exception.

ariel: it is, I have nvr regretted choosing lunch over dinner
happy.gif

u get to start early, end early and after 4pm, the rest of the day is urs. Can spend more time in ur bridal suite also hahahaa...if dinner u can only get to lie down on the bed at 12am.

Hmmm, do you all think it's possible to hold fetch bride ceremony, tea ceremony and ROM Lunch Recep, all in one day?

Ariel,

I think u will have to fetch bride early in the morning if u have alot of relatives for the tea ceremony.

My wedding plan: 12pm, check into hotel.. REST until 4pm then MUA etc came, start at 7pm til 10pm, after that => party with my friends. No tea ceremony, no fetch brides, no yamseng as well.

Hi Ariel,

Yes it is all possible to complete all the ceremonies within a single day or even half a day.

For my wedding last Nov, I had a church wedding followed by a lunch reception in the church premises. We still followed the chinese tradition like the groom came over to fetch the bride at 7.30am. My bridesmaids still have time to tease the groom and his xiong dis a bit. We did the tea ceremony with my parents first, then proceeded to his house for his side relatives.

At 10am, we were all set to go Church which the ceremony began at 11am and ended at 12pm for lunch. Midway thru the reception, the parents gathered the rest of the relatives that hadn't had their tea ceremony and we just used one of the rooms for the tea ceremony. By 2pm, everything was done. It was really very relaxing and no rush.

Coco and Tulips, thanks! I think that's going to be my plan to finish everything by afternoon, hehe. Saving costs too!

ariel: why not? possible to do everything in one day if u manage ur time well.

for me, I decided to hold my rom one yr earlier so that I have more time on my AD to do the rest. that decision proved wise as the timing was just nice for my wedding lunch. if I were to do rom on the same day as well, will be quite rushed for us.

my guests commented they prefer wedding lunch too as they can go home and rest early as opposed to dinner.

i did mine in 2 days. But, we were so tired. Checked in the nice hotel suite to sleep mostly.

My inlaws side had a strange practise of having not just the banquet but also a lunch solely for family and relatives. Luckily, we didn't do that.

Hi ppl ^^
I now looking for a good JP for my Jan wedding, but so far they say not sure of their commitment as it's still long way off.
>.<
Housing-wise, I must have looked at 40+ units islandwide... really lor, SO is too practical, he just want to go for the big but cheapest house at any area. I find it toooooo far to live in CCK & Jurong West because my work needs me to go town & Changi quite often.
So we quarrel, nag, complain etc @_@
Finally just paid deposit on a house (small... 91sqm only) and we feel very very very expensive (almost $500k) but near holland lahhh
For him, he'd rather waste time to travel on long journey and come back to a big house than buy good location (but then, he works at Jurong East & NTU). So JWest & CCK is not an issue.
Aghhhhhh now he still grumbles even when we put down the $
I thought buying house, getting married shd make us feel happy & joyful...
So far it's been a headache. I blame Mah minister as we ballot for 3+years and cannot get. Had we known, we'd apply for then-BTO, next yr can move in le, at half the price...

Now how, half a mil in debt le... sigh

a lot of people started thinking a roof is all that's needed...but you'll soon realise that space is what you'll appreciate....one of my in-laws bought a woodlands jumbo really cheap then and boy 171sqm of space is great....

Pamm, if its any consolation to you, I'm in bigger debt than you. That's the price to pay for buying a house in central areas.

yup, Space is very impt especially if u have kids, and u require the occasional help from in-laws coming over, and if u plan to have a maid... Space! lots of it, else your place will look so untidy with all the kids stuff etc...

but then again, location also impt... so it's a tough call, but i'll rate it as 1) Location, 2) Space, 3) Age. u can still find big houses with Space in good location...

500k housing debt is ok lah... u can unlock it within another cycle if u want... unless HDB prices crash big time, it's 'forced savings' in a way... of cos dun think too much of the interest, it is better to have interest to buy things u could not afford without a loan, than to have no loan facility at all!
