Hmm, we've been together for 6.5 years already. Due to family issues, she moved over to my place about 3 years ago. Our relationship can be said to be very stable already.

We're moving out into a 2-room condo probably end of this year. Her mom helped pay for the downpayment but took a crazy loan, so we're going to more or less take over the housing payments as much as we can handle. Her mom will also be staying with us half the time I suppose.

Like mentioned earlier, I'm currently working part-time trying to scrimp up some savings. There is the imminent costs of the new place's reno + furnitures + appliances etc, proposal ring, engagement rings, ROM reception, bridal costs and AD venue/banquet costs. Very intimidating figures awaiting for me to conjure up the sums to match them I know.

All this, for a young man who completely depleted his 'savings' from younger years and starting from scratch now. Call me crazy, but I'm still going to try to do it. As long as she's happy, I'm willing.

Problem now is I'm intending to further my studies. Screwed up my O'levels due to being with the worst of wrong company, got into a JC and screwed up my A's so badly for many reasons. Went on to finish my NS, and here I am now. Originally wanted to pursue a law degree overseas but that would plunge me into serious financial debts, and I'm not too inclined at the thought of graduating with a huge fortune to repay. So I'm staying local, hoping to get a degree from private uni. Need quite a sum for the school fees as well.

That's why I say, you all ah.. $9999 is kill people set fire. Must take pity on my predicament!

高抬贵手... discount la!

I never run. Haha...

Greetings Mr Siao.

With regards to the membership fees of $9999, would it be of convenience for you to wait for me outside OCBC bank Raffles City branch tomorrow at 12pm sharp? I'll pass the money to you. But.. you might have to flee the scene very fast. Will have matahs on my heels...

RaRa, this is where I reserve my comments instead of resorting to white lies.. hehehehe...

Mach.... what you're doing is v v risky. But if you've done all your math and are fully insured, by all means. 24 is an age of possibilities. I wun dream of doing all these w/o some help (which ur FMIL is doing). But my advice if you want it is to take it a step at a time...

Then again, I suppose you and your gf are earning more than the miserly amt I earned at that age and struggling to save at least 25% of my take home pay for my downpayment.

ok lor... $9998.

hmm, mach, honestly, it's fine to get married but if both of you and both sides' parents are willing, you can cut down a lot on the costs on rings and wedding costs. seriously it's just a ring. personally I gave my bf a very low quota which he cannot exceed for the ring.

you prob have your reasons for buying a condo, but I guess since it's a condo, it should be relatively well renovated right? Really gotta do ur sums wisely.

oh, new member ah?...kk, must give membership fees, its the rule!!!!...

hiyo, no need cold hard cash lar..just TT to our bank a/c can liao lor....

n hor, i also uncle leh..LOL

Not I buy one. Her mom wants to buy a property due to POSSIBLE separation from her dad... cannot be I go and advise her to not buy a condo but get a HDB instead right?

Anyway, her mom's letting us have the condo as a 'long-term temporary' matrimonial home. So in a way a huge saving there. The condition is I have to marry her daughter of course. But she understands my situation so she has kindly allowed for me to promise to marry my FW and move in first. But from the info I gathered, the monthly expenditures for upkeep and the renovation works and appliances/furnitures cost a bomb. I will strive to contribute as much as I can to the new place ba.

very very shiong for you....

Rara....for a new condo...the basics are there liao. But if you want your unit to look diff from the rest....here comes the reno lor.

Hmm... Mach unless you're promised a high-flying career w a matching salary, your gf's mum is also placing a rather risky bet on you leh. I dun understand what is meant by "long term temporary" matrimonial home. Does it mean u have to move out sooner or later? Then who is servicing the condo?? Dun gong gong, end up paying for 2 homes huh...

Yes, I have done my sums. Extremely risky, but no risk no gain right? Haha.. Just indulging in some self-consolation.

We've been through a lot in our formative years together. And being the uxurious man I am, I am not going to be stingy with the ring. Knowing the bleak future ahead, I probably would not be able to 'upgrade' her ring to something nicer on anniversaries and such. So might as well get her the best of my ability now.

FYI, I'm earning peanuts now. (Not the Durai sense on course) But I'm slowly but surely saving up for the cost of the proposal ring. Am willing to blow all my savings... She deserves it.

钱是å¯ä»¥èµšå›žæ¥çš„。

Mach... a rock is a rock is a rock. Truthfully at that age, I was rather myopic and demanded a sizable rock. But as the bills piled up, I wish we saved that money for the more important things. Then again, if you think it's a priority to give her the best right now...

Hmm G~gal, you are right. She's placing a risky bet on me alright. I'm the underdog. The black horse. But her daughter loves me dearly, and she respects her daughter's wishes. And I'm thankful for their trust in a seemingly future-less man.

By 'long-term temporary' matrimonial home, I mean she is allowing us to treat it as our own place, for now. There are 2 bedrooms, and we'll be having the master bedroom, whilst the other room will be occupied by her when she does stayover. (probably half the time like I mentioned) I used the term long-term because she did not place any timeline on our stay, and temporary because in the event I strike lottery and have the financial stability to have a new lovenest, we can move out lor. Slightly tricky situation I guess.

Anyway, I will definitely 'gong-gong' support this condo's costs as far as humanly possible. I'm currently working 6 days a week, waking up at 6am, working till 7pm. Remunerations are disappointing, but I can't expect much since it's a part-time job (despite me working full-time hours, cos I can't commit with school potentially starting later this year).

I mean, for a guy to 'free-load' sure will ä¸å¥½æ„æ€ right?

well mach, you sound like a very sweet guy in a great relationship, but you should always have something to fall back on financially especially when you're going to take on so many responsibilies. i guess since you are willing to take such a big risk, you just have to be careful not to get into too much debt.

btw, where is your income going to come from while you do your degree?

Mach... wah.. you gotta slog hard for yor wife k? dun make her suffer.. and do all best to prove to your MIL you can do it.. just for men's pride sake

mach, proposal ring need not be that spectacular. You can really choose something nice but cheaper.

You can save up slowly and buy something spectacular next time

Mach, wah working 6 days week and trying to make ends meet. It better be worth it lor. sorry but if I were you, I wun go for condo lor, even if my MIL says i can stay "long term temporary" cos the onus is on me to pay for it while I'm staying there!! And I guess your gf doesn't have the means to pay for it too right. it's good that you're such a sweet guy, but dun be a love fool lor.

Ya, I agree w simpleman re getting a nicer ring next time. You need to be careful of cashflow now.

Eh, u all dun so evil lah. Even if AL is proving to be an a**, for the wife to go thru divorce oso not easy leh.

Simpleman, spectacularly cheap ring har?
happy.gif

now just buy a cheaper ring.. next time rich liao or save up already then buy ex one... tots that counts... that stone does not depict your love for her

condo I am not too sure cos he did share much detail. How much the condo. How much the deposit. How much the loan and payment per month. Who is paying for the loan payment. And of course I presume he would need to pay for condo maintenance and utilities.. etc etc.

actually I intend to buy wife a diamond on our 20th year anniversary - which is next year. But now no need lah.. so can go europe for tour with all my children.
