A Place for Singles

to be fair, it isn't just taxis. I don't understand why singaporeans doesn't use their signals at all. Also, the horn is something so 'untouchable'. Its nothing wrong with sounding the horn to warn fellow road users of potential harzards.

I'm sure all of us have seen how irritated or angry some drivers here becomes when we do sound our horns.

Look at the chaotic traffic everywhere out of singapore. Yet no where else are pple this pissed over the horns.

Hi Cecilia, its not so much of overtaking but slow filtering and total obstruction of the incoming traffic.

hi Simpleman, a collision involving someone driving at 100km is surely different from one at 200km. The extend of the damage is far more devastating.

i do signal .. keke.. and i'm singaporean... to be fair, i think most singaporean drivers are rude, dun give way, dun signal, and always think they are right...

i dun understand why some drivers are so annoyed at ppl sounding horn at them... i also tot it is good to warn drivers... too ego la.. especially young men cant take other drivers sound their horns at them.. my hb is one. i always tell him the driver is only warning u, no need to flare...

Simpleman, hands up in agreement. Really leh. Why har? I dun think I'm one who goes around picking fights but when it comes to driving, all the patterns come out. Err.. Dun recognise myself anymore. When u can't beat them (the drivers with bad habits & attitudes), join them. :P

Morning peeps... now switch from talking abt cars to bad drivers?? Heh.. think I'll join the ranks one day. I think most pple are not born bad drivers but they are influenced by others' behavior on the road.. I can't stand when pple cut into the lane w/o signalling... hopefully I dun do the same next time :P

but there are courteous ones who wave thank you for giving way.. slow down when someone wanna filter in front of you... keke.. i'm one of them... but hor, i can scold at drivers (especially lorry drivers) who nearly get me into accident and e braking.. hate those lorries...

Actually driving habits are contagious. If you are nice to people on the road, most will reciprocate with nice gestures.

But in Singapore all kiasu, no one wants to make the first move. Everyone comes out with their own pattern to protect themselves.

In my neighboorhood because we always see the same cars driving around, we tend to be much more courteous - letting each other pass (when there is obstruction), waving and saying thanks when someone has given us way and etc etc.

If only we can all bring this good habit to the main roads. I guess it is part of our mental makeup. Singaporeans just need to loosen up a bit.

Bad habits are equally contagious, eg when someone cut into my lane and I started to curse, my daughters did the same thing (started to curse) when the next time it happened. So, now I try to watch my mouth and told myself to loosen up a bit. Imagine my 4 year old daughter saying the driver in front: "Idiot driver"

haha ya i can't imagine that... especially with children must watch the words used... my friend scold the 'F' word for nothing.. even if a book accidentally dropped he will scold it.. one day his kid said the same thing

My wife tells me how much I like to 'complain' abt the other drivers with I'm driving. I think I really dislike the general attitude of drivers here. But I don't show the 3rd finger or pickup a fight. All the complains can only be heard by the passengers in the car. So, i think its fine. :p

Seriously, I enjoy driving so much more in France than in Singapore. Talking abt cutting queues. I admit I'm one of them. But I always signal and look for gaps and not squeeze in when there isn't. If no one give way, I just slow down & even stop till one does give way and acknowledge their kindness.

The reason why I cut the 'queue' is simple. Drivers here like to queue too much when there is simply alot of gaps ahead. E.g. an exit with 2 lanes. Singaporeans like to queue in a single line slowly. Only to leave alot of gap ahead.

Overseas, no one waste time leaving big gaps and yet expect everyone to quietly and orderly queue behind. Its very dumb to me. I don't think its dangerous at all, if we signal early and cut into clearly big gaps our fellow kiasi drivers leave. No need to tailgate or stick so closely to the car infront. Just maintain enough space to manuvure to exploit the gaps. Normally, the queue cutters are those that are familiar with the traffic condition at the road. They know where the gaps are and move ahead. E.g. ECP exit to Marine Parade. Alot of drivers cramped behind to filter out making traffic really slow. I just move ahead knowing there is 80% chance of a big gap ahead. If there isn't, I would just take a u-turn back at the next junction. Much better than squeezing and cramping with the crowd behind.

Cecilia, chip of the old block. Like father like son.

Cutting queue like when there is a gap is not exactly bad until there is an accident. I always think if the person is so capable of cutting in I will let him be. I myself cut queues as well when I ame very familiar with that particular stretch of the road as we know sometimes there are 2 lanes and people all queue on 1 lane.

Regarding about cursing/complaining in the car - well it is really up to the individual. I am more conscious because of children in the car and in a way it is also right, why need to be so uptight, so I try to loosen up a bit. Of course there will still be morons that will piss us off.

Haha.. my hb always remind me next time if we have kids better watch my mouth and stop saying s**t and f**k. :P At least those are in English wor... shld I use a different language to express myself... hehe..

morning dudes and dudettes!

wah driving habits... i dun know why pple simply dun signal man... sometimes u wanna turn out but u need to wait for a car to cross first, turns out the car is turning into the same road while u wait there like a dumbo... even as pedestrian, this gets to me. i'll repeat this - Signalling is the ONLY MEANS to communicate between motorists/motorists & motorists/pedestrians... i have no idea why we dun even have the courtesy to let others know our directional intentions.

i travel fast... but u'll be surprised that it is for safety reasons rather than being reckless... i am one of those who likes to be in front, becos being in front means i dun have to be subjected to poor/absent-minded driving of other cars if i'm behind them... i won't get screwed if they decide to suddenly stop in the middle of AYE from 80 to 0kmh in order to insert a cashcard, i won't be hit if a joker suddenly decides to filter left becos he suddenly realises he has to turn left. sporeans are horrible drivers... considering that if we miss an exit, we'll only take another 5mins to correct tat mistake, i see no reason for last minute decisions... just do 2 u-turns is safer than putting other pple's lives in danger.

our awareness of cars/power/manoeuvreability sucks! if u're an owner of a small car, then drive it like a small car and 80kmh feels fast, have the decency to realise that it's relative... dun go driving on right lane simply becos u think u're fast... i NEVER drove on right lane when i was driving my 600cc suzuki swiftlet... NEVER, cos i know my car and i respect the presence of more powerful cars around.

i dislike slow drivers who try to take pole positions when stopped at traffic light... if u're a slow car and there's a car in front of u, i dun see any reason to filter and be the 1st car on the left or right... There's nothing more irritating than a slow car filtering to be the 1st car on the right lane and end up being slower than all other cars. i hit 80kmh in 5secs, u hit 80kmh in 10secs or u dun even drive abv 60kmh... What's the justification in being in front except that u're Inconsiderate?

anyway filling up gaps is fine, but at least be fast about it... anyway i'm one of those drivers most pple hate unless they are true drivers themselves... i overtake very closely becos i can, i filter left right centre becos i can, alot of things i do on the road is becos i can... as opposed to idiots who do it becos 'i want', when they obviously can't... causing grief and accidents. Think about it... Wanting and being Able To do it is where the fine line is.

i think i sound like a sucky driver... but i welcome anyone who wants to take a ride with me... i can give a good lesson in driving and perhaps help u realise that speeding is safer than being slow and overly careful... nomatter wat pple thinks ie "sgguy says gov ban porn becos porn is bad" kind of mentality. speeding only bad if your car not meant to speed, not equipped to speed - tyres/brakes/suspension etc...

simpleman,

I read in the Newpaper some weeks back where a reader pled for the authorities to punish queue cutter seriously cos the disrupt the flow of traffic.

So, I guess those kiasi drivers must be punished equally for jamming our traffic with their 'safe' driving too.

Powder, there is something more irritating. That is handphone drivers. Jokers that do all kinds of things to obstruct the traffic just because he/she wants to pick up a call. I have seen idiots trying to manuvure a uturn while talking on the mobile when they clearly can't concentrate and unaware of their surroundings. These are the true jokers that needs to be punished.

ok tat gets to me too.... bloody hell a handsfree kit how much? non-original $5 can get liao... takes 2 secs to plug in and 2 to plug out... like that also wanna save the time or too lazy... have u seen pple read papers while driving? wah lau!

bro, we don't even need a handsfree. Mobiles nowadays comes with speaker. All we need to do is mute the stereo and then converse very clearly using handsfree.

I will not pick up the call during a turn but only when its clearly safe to take a moment to activate the answer on speaker button.

Newspaper readers. Yes. Take forever to move off from the traffic lights cos they are so consumed with whatever news they are reading. They think they are in the loo or something. HAHA.

ya true, somemore got that auto-answer thing if u use bluetooth or handsfree... so can be totally hands free lah...

ok heading out for lunch liao... ciao!
