Hey... yesterday hb's colleague suggested Daihatsu Terios as another alternative to the SX4... any idea? Personally dun like Daihatsu... like lorry/mini van brand...

I'm into any sport tat involves trying to attempt suicide.

Kayaking is which one har? Different from canoeing rite? I windsurfed too far out to sea once & cldn't get back to shore. Some cute hunky guy (well, why else do u think I windsurf??) took over for me but I had to kayak back to shore. My 1 & only time. Got prob balancing the thing. Think I took longer kayaking back to shore than him surfing back. Eheheh...

Daihatsu Terios is basically the Toyota Rush... i find the Rush overpriced... really overpriced. anyway i dun have a very good impression of Daihatsu's distributor here... on that basis i dun think u shuld consider the car... it's for similar reasons why your hubby won't consider PI cars...

laundry, how abt swimming in shark-infested waters? can ask sgguy along... i have faith in u tat u'll survive... keke

Daihatsu Terios (sound like terok) is quite old model and has been refined over the years.

But from what a I know. Daihatsu engine not so good and very noisy.

ggal, Actually if you are not looking at the typical sedan car. Look at PI range of cars. There is no reason not to look at PI cars at this age.

Any reason why don't consider PI cars?

Research has shown tat if u know shark behavour well enough, u can really do tat. For starters, stop dressing up like a seal (in black wetsuit) when u get into their territory. But too exciting for me liao lah. My heart's fragile. Need G~gal's CPR skills after such a swim.

laundry,

Real life experience has shown that shark can be confused by movement. So the shark can mistaken you for a seal, but after chewing realize you not bah bah enough, they will spit you out.

simpleman, we dun want a typical family sedan.. prefer more sporty type of car. Ya, all the reviews mentioned that Terios is noisy. I also think the styling is quite ugly. As for PI cars, I have no prob w that, only that hb is more wary abt them. If we wanna get a Wish, it wld be PI anyway.

Laundry, yes kayaking is like canoeing but in a lighter craft. I prefer it over canoeing cos I can go much faster. Haven't tried windsurfing.. think it's harder to control and usually SG isn't that windy also.

Laundry after the shark spits you out, I think no need to do cpr already... BTW what I read once was that if you're attacked by a shark, poke its eyes, dun struggle or pull else your limbs will be ripped off. But the best advice is dun swim w a shark la...

Simpleman, I dun wanna be a shark's accidental chew hor. Or spit :P

G~gal, ya. Tat's why I dun windsurf anymore. Hahah. Not windy enough unless u go far out. Too far out, I need to bring passport in case I drift to Batam. Tough choice.

back on cars?

my personal finding abt PI, the hidden costs. Their cars comes cheap only when u take the basic without leather & other accessories. I was looking for minimum interest & loan period. PI all have a penalty of $3k if we don't take their loan of min 40k.

While at Borneo Motors, we will only lose the 'discount' package which is nothing close to the figure of $3k. In the end, we took 1 yr loan at 2.6 interest to enjoy the discount package. The total interest for the car worked out to be only $800+.

If I would to take up a 7 yrs 40k loan, the interest alone will be $7,280. That's almost $6,500 difference.

Milo, unfortunately in order to afford the car, we gotta take the 7 yr loan. But I think it's ok if I can earn enough in the next few yrs to pay back earlier. If cannot, then I figure no pt keeping the car also.

Laundry, ya the teeth is pushed out automatically when they drop off. And they are razor sharp like ginzu knives.

Ceci, I've stopped eating shark's fin for yrs already. Even if it's served in a banquet, I dun eat as a matter of principle.

good.. think should encourage more ppl to do it... fish maw soup is a good alternative at banquets.. tastes better also..

rara you say post what at another thread? where u go yesterday? why good luck?

G, try your very best to take 5yrs loan... personal advice... unless the extra money u can use to invest and make a higher percentage of money... when u're more or less ready can always buzz me for advice...

hi simpleman,
thank you for the contact!
since yours is a BM i thot the workshop might just be doing exclusively on expensive cars.
happy.gif
anyway i'm sure u can already tell i'm a total idiot when it comes to car servicing, maintenance, etc. i've been going to borneo for servicing all these while and so like u all said... stupid.
i'm looking for a worshop not just for servicing. it's more like if got prob at least i got a workshop to go to. for a start i'm thinking of replacing my brake pads.

milo,

PI comes in all different shape and size. Not true. Some of them will throw in whatever you want - at a slightly higher price. You need to ask and negotiate.

So for your interest calculation it is not valid to compare in this manner. Of course they make some money of the the interest and that is why they would push you to take the loan.

The difference in the interest is really only the time-value of money. I mean you pay interest of 7.2K over seven years for 40K loan. Assuming you don't take the loan and then you invest your 40K and get a better return than the 2.6% flat interest, you would still be better off.

One thing I agree is that you need to shop around and be aware of all the hidden costs. It is just that PI can be more flexible in trading for eg, sports rim for leather and things like that. Regular agent are more structured and if you want a toyota from Borneo Motors you don't have much of a choice. As for PI, you have so many choices and you can shop around and negotiate (and they know they have competitors).

Of course for 1st time buyer, getting from agent is still safer - just in case you are afraid of being conned and not aware of all the hidden costs.

On things being equal, PI will be cheaper than your regular agent and they are able to deliver your car much faster.

hi simpleman,

of course if the $40k investment turn out well then, but it can probably turn out otherwise. When we take up a loan, for sure the interest is incurred already.

We didn't take a 40k loan cos Borneo Motors offer was only min 1 yr loan of 25k. We took the min and squeeze the most out of the deal.

For myself, I prefer to keep liablitites low and invest on whatever true surplus that I have. With the exception of housing cos CPF is untouchable money, might as well use them. And I got the house at a low. For sure, the interest would be offset by the future sale.

If all things being equal, getting a PI might not make so much diff. I went around PIs and made cold calls to all the PIs in the newspaper, its all the same. All required a substantial penalty for not taking their financing or insurance.

ggal,

Take note that for most car (with value < 55K excluding COE) - the loan will be under the Hired-purchase act which means the interest are calculated on a flat basis and added upfront to the price of the car. That is you are already paying for the interest of car for the full duration. When you redeem early (say you can't afford the car), the bank will give you a little rebate using the Rule 78 formula. It is very complicated to explain here. Suffice to say, if you redeem early (the earlier you redeem), the more you will lose out because the bank will only rebate to you a little of the interest that you have paid up front.

Actually these are all the hidden cost of buying a car and most people just do not realize. If you plan to buy a car, plan to stick to it. If you are planning for a 7-year loan, be prepared to own the car at least for 3-4 years.

milo,

It is financial prudence to reduce liability and not to take loan when you can afford it. Most singaporeans are actually not so financially smart - as they do not see the financial impact of early redemption for eg.

On the other hand, Cash is king and for the really savvy guys, having cash at hand to invest (while taking a car loan) is really a very smart move.

It all depends on the individual.

As for PI, perhaps my experience is not quite the same as yours. I don't really make cold call but I went to their offices. Once I show interest and I really see that I can squeeze a lot more out of them. Just before I sign on the dotted, I got them to commit to more and more.

Cold call they probably give you standard answers. Just my thoughts. Again, I am a experienced car shopper so it make sense for me. That is why for 1st time buyer I would still advise to go to car agent.

addy..

i know wat u mean..me accnt, know how to calculate the dollar n cents..but buying the house is just for myself to stay n incur extra expenses.n me dun like the rental idea also...

my thots...buy house can appreciate, buy car sure depreciate.

u can stay in your house but not in your car....you rent out your house as investment but not your car :P

ya, tot i saw a few in those agencies b4..

go there hor, see liao good hor, buy on the spot plus buy a house n migrate there.of cos must be able to find a job there lar.if not sell viet beef noodles..LOL
