A Place for Singles

i always kena caned one.. haha! cos nvr do homework! whahahaha!!! every month my form teacher request to se my mum .. haha! can't imagine so funny!

Wah.. U write until liddat. I can hazard a guess liao. SP maritime courses? Eh, do u need to take PPCDL one har? Understand basic navigation mah.

I studied at the one whose old campus was near Orchard. We can wear our wet market clothes for classes, then stroll down to Orchard Load one. Bo style. Hahah...

Wah.. Laundry.. you mata hor? What's PPCDL?

Powder, ya... the NS guys today go to Tekong "Resort" for training... gd food by S'pore Food Industry, uniforms cleaned by maid, etc... My cousin went to the Nee Soon camp and practically spent his NS days there reading comics!! Can't believe this is tax-payers' money we're talking about here...

yeah i did the maritime course of cos! which other diploma can guarantee u a usd6000 mthly pay... i'm a sucker for money and dun mind a life at sea... in fact i loved it. mine at labrador park... damn sianz...

ya g-gal, army really quite different now... dun know if good or bad.

PPCDL is the boating license. Powered Pleasure Craft Driving License I think. Aiyah, I put short form coz I can't remember the long form wat.

USD6k?? I need to go back to school. Study maritime also. I love the sea too. I dun mind moving to a kelong leh. Heh.

haha... kelong and working onboard ships different lah... i dun have the license, but i have enough time steering those big ships to convert for a licence. unfortunately i didn't and it's no longer valid. erm ya, basically a guaranteed route to hit sgd 10k in 7yrs... some pple work 10yrs also dun reach there. not many pple know this i guess, we were Pariahs in Poly cos most pple in my course are 20pointers from O'Levels... poor result kind. u'll be surprised i needed to appeal to get into this course Even tho i had better academic results... i panicked big time man! cos i planned this route in sec 2 liao...

but out at sea u will suffer from your social life... it's an exchange i guess. not suitable for girls... alot of brute strength needed onboard with limited manpower. anyway my dreams to be a captain died when dad died so it's back to spore shores! hehe, not bad lah... i got the right Hard Knocks to get where i am.

Biz course is good what... quite versatile and can work in financial industry... good money too. I studied science up till A levels and only did arts/humanities in Uni... I'll never make big money... waddehell...:P

hey laundry, you really not bad leh..you know abt cars and now, even boats and you know abt this PPCDL!! i went, see mi lai eh ??!! so goooogal is not alone...

powder, you earn US$6k!! poor me, only S$600 (not a typo ah) i am in the wrong industry man !!

biz course good ok? just need to find the holes tat nobody else knows about... basically in Life - anything which is popular knowledge WILL NOT yield u the highest returns. Niche is Niche becos not many pple willing... many pple UNwilling becos they have been 'educated and taught' WRONGLY. i can't stress further on tat...

do note i was more or less decided to go into Shipping in Sec 2... specifically into Oil. i didn't believe my teachers nor parents nor adults... most of the pple telling me how bright my future will be if i studied well - they aren't even making 5-figure salary... how to teach me? (i must say it's nothing to do with me being greedy, i was just very sick of being poor)

hard knocks, wat's hard knocks? stupid hard knocks, or smart ones? always go for Smart Hard Knocks!

i think i either sound arrogant or 'zhuai' whenever italk abt such stuff... hmm, not easy. sometimes the things i say will make me misunderstood, but it's my fav topic... ! keke

Agree to certain extend powder. I think so long as you strive to be the best in your field...any field, you can still be a success and make lotsa money... from sushi chefs, to hairdressers, to gardeners.... anything can let you make money if you are one of the best.

goooogal, it's true..not a typo. working full time and 7 days a week.. hmmmm..it's a decent job ah..

let's just say, working with passion does not equate $$, similar to those in the theatre. monetary gain is not there...but great satisfaction.

eh powder, arrogant or not...nvm, just talk, we listen... can learn something too.

Ah... Powder... Why never tell me this 10 yrs ago?? Sec 2 and u already knew what u wanted to do? Impressive leh. Sec 2 and I was still going "Arts or Science, Arts or Science?". :P I worked with the oil industry briefly before. So jealous of the kind of salary they're getting. But there are downsides to it lah. Shiftwork, location (Jurong Island??), perception of it being a hazardous job etc. And it's such a male-dominated industry lor. Best is to work on oil rigs. Work 6 mths, relax 6 mths. Paid in barrels of oil. Hahah... But social life also suffer lor.

Cecilia, I also took biz leh. Ok lah. Good side, it's so general tat u can go into almost any line. Bad side, it's so general tat u end up in all sorts of crappy lines. Yup, agreed with Powder. U need a niche.

Latino, I like to learn new things leh. But jack of all trades, master of none. And it has to be for the fun of it. Put in tests & exams only, I run away faster than a roadrunner. Actually cars is something pretty new I picked up. Love of the sea is a childhood thing. PPCDL is something I learnt from a group of frens who's into seasports. I was 1 of the last few in the group to go get it some more. But my all-time fave topic is actually ANIMALS! I wanna become the female equivalent of Steve Irwin leh. Laundry_woes: The Cockroach Hunter Diaries!! *whips out Baygon* Wahahah...

Powder, it's ok lah. Brag all u want here. If u get too inflated, we'll prick u with a pin and watch u deflate lor.

december babe! no bored .. no bored !! think of year end bonus, think of christmas, think of presents..food and reunion makan sessions! wah, so many things right ?

oh gosh, think of new year..means another year older...new resolutions ...alamak...sian ah !!

Latino.. so I guess you're doing creative-related work right? ;) That's cool.. I would love to do that and forget about the pay... if hb can support.. hehe...

gd grades not pre-requisite to join the banking and finance industry. But gd grades matter if you want to do inve$$tment banking, unless you belong to the rich and famous realm or have a lot of professional contacts...for oil industry, grades aint so impt rite..

haha Laundry, tat's funny! 10yrs ago? i was in boys school all this while, would never have met u anyway.

nah... won't touch much on the industry per se, prefer to just talk abt our Mindset. and honestly, it starts from the day u step to school... so many pple keep repeating to u Useless info about Success and how it equates to our academic results... we're kinda Programmed. but hey it doesn't mean it's not important to study! i believe core subjects are English/Mandarin/E.Maths/Literature...

erm the industry to dirty and hazardous meh? hehe... this is actually the mentality that makes this industry so niche...
happy.gif

good grades impt to HR if u're going thru them... tat's why i NEVER go thru HR... i bypass and go straight to the boss. but need to network alot to do it this way... in a way, it also reflects your resourcefulness and aggressiveness... for marketing, it's pretty important. the HR will never be able to recognise good talent, unless those very professional Headhunters who 'follow' the progress of certain individuals and build their database - this kind of headhunters i respect. otherwise mostly are just placements... if i can do a better job than the others, why would i allow myself to be pitted against them based on my academics??? so better to bypass and ask the boss out for coffee. keke

Powder, your tactic may work for SMEs or smaller companies.. but for MNCs can work or not? Networking is definitely important...

G-gal, i actually did that with an MNC... met the boss 1-1 already, before i went thru the HR for the interview (i got someone to get HR to pull out my application). But honestly i'm not an MNC person... tat period i abit itchy backside and decided to 'build up my profile' abit, so tat's why i checked/asked around, also to brush up my interview skills.

whether something works or not - i guess it's up to us lah... if it doesn't - we suffer no loss leh. if it does - we might get our dream job.

oh ya speaking of dream job... one thing i notice alot of pple like to apply for their dream job in their dream company TOO EARLY... they try to start in their dream career... but a smarter way would be to do dream jobs in Other companies first, then at mid-management - Jump into the dream company. it's the smarter way to move... long service/loyalty is not well-regarded in result-oriented industries, in fact it's a burden.

Powder, maybe I'm from the convent school over the other side leh? Eheheh... Heng ah! Modesty secured. I not from convent school.

Going straight to the boss is definitely more productive. But agreed with G~gal that it depends on the size of the company. Dun forget I work for the govt leh. Can u imagine? Eh, I wanna see your PS (tat's Permanent Secretary for Ministries). Or eh, I wanna see your CEO. Kenna thrown out head first ah.

Haha... Laundry you din zhao geng cos you wear shorts under your skirt issit??? SOP lah...Hahaha...

Powder, I think that you definitely need some "high level" connection in order to have the opportunity to meet the boss. Also depends on the company culture... some bosses are open to this kinda meeting, whereas others esp those where the boss is Asian, may not agree to such practice. Govt where hierarchy is revered is definitely no-no lah... Agree that long service is not well-regarded... I've changed so many jobs :P

hi dec-baby, oh ya tat one... actually i was quite sad to read tat u know? it's something i dun even think abt... i would really hate myself if i even thought abt the money to get if something happens to my wife. i think i'd be disgusted with myself... the most natural thing is to take watever CPF money we get, and give back to our In-Laws. they brought up our spouses, they Need the money more during their old age... even if they are super rich, i feel it is the right thing to do.

but it's personal thing i guess... i feel kinda sick if receiving money for my wife's death... i dun want it even if it's 10 million bucks. just feels wrong to use it. it shuld go to her parents and our kid... NOT me. u know wat i mean?

it's like using the money our parents toiled and sweat for to buy Luxury goods... ONLY Worse.

Yeah... I totally agree re the CPF money. Like I said, money is meaningless if I lose my hb... I can't even imagine what I'd do. I'll take whatever money for the kids that's all. My dad has been bugging me to do up a will... anybody know how I can go about this?

haha G-gal,

the difference is, whilst some are figuring out the viability, i would have met the boss for coffee liao. THAT IS wat makes the difference to our results in life.

honestly, there is no-one who is un-meetable (within spore). there is always a way. be it some Celebrity or MP or CEO of so-and-so company. there is always a way to meet that person... but it's only half 20% of the equation... 80% is wat u say when u meet him/her.

no need high level connection lah... the person will always be an Uncle to, a Brother to, a Son to, a Boss to, a Buddy of.... someone. tat's why u call it networking...

Estrella, dunno. Go for dinner and coffee lor.

Powder, yup. I got what you mean. Every family has got their own problems. U know when i read all those threads, i feel so sorry for them. Sometimes, as wives, they feel they are the 'rightful owner' to the husbands' assets, money, etc etc. Hence such issues arised. And one issue leads to another.

I enjoyed reading the threads and your comments especially.. Most of the times your comments reminded me of the things i should have done but did not do or did some things i shouldn't have done.

Estrellaq, I don't really job hop like every few months change a job, except for my 1st few jobs cos the companies didn't survive. For my last couple of jobs, I stayed 1-3yrs each. My philosophy is that each of my jobs should allow me to contribute and learn new things. I dun like to stagnate at a job even if it pays well. I just left a job that could've given me a big fat bonus in Jan. Well.. c'est la vie.

ggal, u are taking it easy. i guess work to u is just for paying bills, there's more to life than simply work? unless the work is unbearable or u have urgent personal commitments, u should have taken the bonus...u deserve it, isnt it...could pamper yourself with spas, holidays with that money..haha. what do u intend to do after this job, other than the impending BK trip?

yeah dec_baby, no lah i'm just being an ass... we all have our perspective i guess, it's just tat i very very very unimpressed by 'auntie' kind of calculative thinking... of cos beneathe it there could be a story that may embarass my whole presumptuous nature. i definitely have my own sets of weaknesses too.

aiyah, i am an uncle... very cheong hei... like to tell stories... sometimes i tend to be naughty and sarcastic, but read between the lines lor... i got hide some story behind wan... keke

Estrellaq... on one hand I'm taking it easy, but on the other hand, I've already taken the July bonus so I felt that if I wait for the Jan bonus, the cycle will never end... I'll never leave my job then! So I found myself a nicer job, with the Jan bonus factored into my new pay package.. how's that? Money can always earn, but experience and time cannot. Time is slipping by as I stay on in my deadend job, so better get out while I can still find a new job. Now, I'm preparing to take a 5-6 weeks break (no pay), enjoy time with my hb and our trips to BKK and KL.. come back, hopefully recharged and ready to continue working in my new job (with a pay rise)!
happy.gif

oic, that sounds fine. i would have done that too! i dont like co that declare bonus and make u wait several mths for the payout.

One thing for sure.. I think I can never work for a govt agency/ministry. Too much bureaucracy, miserly bonus (but the increments are great!), and straitlaced, narrow minded thinking. My hb is in civil service and he totally agrees... Anyway, govt service dun want me cos I dun have an (hon) in my degree...

may be a good thing they dun want u... i believe in marriage partnership, 1 spouse shuld be in stable job, the other one shuld cheong! then nomatter wat, u'll never starve... and the cheong one can provide the silver linings needed for the extra luxuries!

gooogal, not exactly creative..maybe only a little la. it's always a sacrifice to do what you like. gave up my corporate job for a 2nd career. i am still enjoying it after several years. got heartaches n heartbreaks ... ups n downs. work is like my husb/bf..heheh. i am devoted to it everyday. luckily also got family's emotional support.

you can also. 2nd career, doing what you like. anyway, diff ppl has diff wants n needs. whatever we do, just give our best.

wah, so many posting till i cannot catch up..no access in office, only can post when back home...

talking about oversea studies, was a great experience cos i been there n done it..very valubale experience i should say..but also the best way to stray cos no one to control watever u do lor...

btw laundry, the evo is not only mivec..its mivec turbo..keke
