A treasured wedding tradition, the gifting of Si Dian Jin jewellery to a new bride is an ancient custom that many modern Chinese families still hold dearly today. Literally translated as four touches of gold, Si Dian Jin traditionally comprises a necklace, ring, bangle, and pair of earrings. The custom of gifting Si Dian Jin originated from the Chaosan region of the Guangdong province in China. As the Chinese character jin (金) resembles the sloping rooftops of the houses in the Chaosan region, Si Dian Jin symbolised the groom’s promise to always shelter and provide for the bride.

The Tradition of Si Dian Jin in Singapore

Today, the groom’s family gifts their new daughter-in-law Si Dian Jin as a symbol of welcome and acceptance into the family. Many modern mothers also gift their daughters Si Dian Jin as they celebrate their new chapter as a bride. The bridal jewellery set is also significant as the parents' blessing to the newlyweds, to wish them joy and abundance in their marriage. The bridal set of four gold jewellery pieces is customarily presented to the bride during the Guo Da Li ceremony as a betrothal gift.

Modern Si Dian Jin Designs

Traditional Si Dian Jin comprises a necklace, ring, bangle, and pair of earrings in yellow gold, often worked in auspicious motifs such as flowers, shuang-xi (双囍) characters, or the dragon and phoenix symbols.
