Valerie and Xerxes’s Elegant Wedding at Hilton Singapore Orchard
A simplistic yet serene solemnisation at Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore and a wedding at Hilton Singapore Orchard initiated Valerie and Xerxes’s journey into forever.
It’s the straightforward type of love that makes everyone swoon. From a chance encounter in the club and a humble prata supper, to an authentic proposal with a DIY ring, Valerie and Xerxes’s love story is unapologetic and unpretentious in every aspect. With an unfussy outdoor solemnisation held in the pleasant scapes of Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore’s lawn and the classic events of a wedding unfolding at Hilton Singapore Orchard, the couple began their married life in simple serenity.
How did the two of you meet?
Valerie: We met at a club. I was with my friends, he was with his friends, and we were all dancing near the DJ booth. Xerxes’s friend decided to push us closer and tried to get us to kiss, haha. Afterwards, Xerxes asked me to head to the dance floor to dance. The next day, we went out to have prata for supper.

What is it about your partner that you love the most?
Valerie: I bring his energy down when he needs me to, as he is super extroverted. I love how we can enjoy each other’s presence even if we are doing our own thing, though I do join him in playing games on the PS5. It’s the little moments together that we enjoy.

What was the moment that made you realise that he/she was the one for you?
Valerie: It was when he told me I’m his “one shot, one kill” during a picnic date. Things were going smoothly and we applied for a BTO flat after our third year together.

Tell us about your proposal.
Valerie: The funny thing is, we went to JB to hand-craft our own engagement ring and I told him that I’d be fine being proposed to with just the DIY ring. During my birthday, he booked a hotel for a staycation and I took off the ring before my shower. When I came out of the shower and into the living room, he was down on one knee proposing with the ring.

Where was your venue and why did you choose it?
Our solemnisation was at Dusit Thani Laguna Singapore and the wedding at Hilton Singapore Orchard. We wanted an outdoor solemnisation and fell in love with Dusit Thani’s space. Hilton’s imperial ballroom was also awesome, as we didn’t want a standard ballroom.

Did you have a theme and how did you achieve it?
We just wanted it to be simple, with a floral Bridgerton and aviation theme. We went with the hotel florist and it turned out great! We bought our boarding sign on Taobao and our invitations looked like boarding passes.

What was the day like and how were you feeling?
We had a small, close number of family and friends for the solemnisation. It was raining that day, but we still wanted to push for an outdoor solemnisation. In the middle of the solemnisation, it started to drizzle, so we quickly signed the papers and went indoors as it started to pour right after. We took our photos indoors and only went out after it stopped raining, but it started pouring heavily again later and Xerxes’s suit was wet!

On the wedding day, we didn’t have a gate crash, but Valerie woke up early to get her make-up and hair done. She was nervous but excited. We had our bridal party photoshoot, tea ceremony and dinner banquet. It went great and we played the wedding shoe game during our wedding dinner.

Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding?
The rain on our solemnisation day, it was fun. The wedding went by fast, and the shoe game was most memorable because Xerxes’s friend challenged us to sing impromptu.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with other couples currently planning their wedding?
Book the important vendors first, like the venue, photographers and videographers. The rest, you can plan slowly and enjoy the process. On the wedding day, just have fun and be in the present. Don’t treat your wedding day like a photoshoot, be yourself and enjoy it with your guests and family.
