Jin And James’s Warm, Relaxed Wedding At The Outpost Hotel Sentosa
Keeping it real on the big day, down-to-earth, heartfelt moments and shared memories were the main priority of Jin and James’s wedding at The Outpost Hotel Sentosa.
From bumping into each other repeatedly at clubs in their carefree, younger days to finally tying the knot after eight years, Yoo Jin and James are a couple that lives in the moment, and their wedding day was living proof. Unpretentious yet effortlessly refined, the celebration at The Outpost Hotel Sentosa was a thoughtful one that included traditions dear to their hearts, and required no need for rambunctious decor.

Tell us about how you met.
Jin: I matched with James’s friend, G, on a dating app 8 years ago. Nothing romantic came out of that connection, but we became friends, so I invited him and his buddies to my 19th birthday celebration at F.Club. James was part of G’s entourage that night and that’s how we first met. Later on, we continued bumping into each other at F.Club (because we were both in our clubbing phase back then) and naturally started talking from there. Our pre-wedding video, done by Peel My Prawns, shares more about us!

What was the proposal like?
Jin: It happened on a very unassuming, cloudy day while we were in Amsterdam for a holiday. I had always told James that I wanted the proposal to include just the two of us, overlooking a nice view, but I didn’t think it was going to be during the trip (and he had been very discreet with the ring making process the whole past year). We were on a watchtower in Zaanse Schans, overlooking a beautiful field of historic windmills and wooden houses when James popped the question. It took me by surprise, but that was exactly how I wanted it to be.

What do you love the most about your partner?
Jin: His patience and calmness in every situation.

James: Her humor and joy for life.

We also both agree that there’s no other company we enjoy more than each other’s.

Did you have a wedding theme?
We didn’t really start off with a theme, but decided to work based on the decorations already provided by the hotel, which consisted of white, green and natural wood. This gave us a clearer direction in sourcing for decorations on our own, and we didn’t have to do much brainstorming either.

Why did you choose to wed at the chosen wedding venue?
We wanted to minimise decoration costs, so we felt that a photogenic venue would make up for the lack of decor. The Outpost Hotel Sentosa had lovely colonial vibes, a beautiful outdoor solemnisation area, a perfectly-sized ballroom that could host ~160 pax and chandeliers that provided a warm, cozy atmosphere. It was also a plus point that there was plenty of parking available for our guests. Once we saw the venue in person, we immediately knew we wanted to have our wedding there.

What was the wedding planning process like?
Neither of us have actually been to many weddings prior to this, so we were at a loss when we first began wedding planning. We didn’t know of a lot of wedding customs, traditions and other considerations, so we decided from the get-go that we had to engage a wedding coordinator, at least for the day of. It turned out to be the best decision ever, because our wedding coordinators from The Wedding People took over so much of the planning and logistics even 3 months ahead of the wedding; all we had to do was source for vendors!

We also decided to skip a few of the usual customs, such as the gatecrash and Guo Da Li as our parents weren’t insistent on them and they didn’t hold much personal significance to us either.

Tell us more about your custom-made Hanbok!
Jin: We wanted to pay homage to my Korean heritage, and the easiest way to do so was to wear Hanboks. There aren’t a lot of options for Hanbok rentals in Singapore, so we got them custom-made at Gwangjang Market in Korea, which is a well-known place to source for affordable Hanbok makers. In total, both our Hanboks cost about S$1000 and we get to keep them for life!

What was the wedding day like?
Jin: It was a day full of laughter, tears, and heartfelt speeches. We focused most of our efforts into making this an occasion of love and a celebration of our story, so we didn’t really prioritise the aesthetics. Most of the decor was actually just the basic decorations offered by our hotel, and I ordered all our florals and reception table items from Taobao. Our wedding day coincidentally fell on my mother’s birthday, so we had a mini birthday celebration during the wedding too!

What did family and friends say about the wedding?
They said that it was a well-planned, thoughtful wedding. For that, we have to thank our wedding coordinators from The Wedding People, they really did so much, our bridal party barely had anything to do!

If you could share a piece of advice with couples currently planning their wedding, what would it be?
Let go of control on the wedding day. It’s okay for small details to not pan out the way you initially wanted them to; the guests wouldn’t know if anything goes “wrong” because they aren’t part of the wedding planning! We’d also highly recommend to invest in a reliable wedding planner or coordinator, because they truly were the MVPs in our wedding. They’ll save you time, stress and effort so you get to enjoy the most of your wedding day.
