Weijie and Nicol’s Jubilant and Chic Wedding at The Singapore Edition
Polytechnic sweethearts Weijie and Nicol said “Yes!” to forever in the presence of their loved ones in a celebration that was truly a representation of their fun selves.
Weijie Chen, 31, and Nicol Ng, 32, first met during orientation at Nanyang Polytechnic back in 2010. They were classmates studying Industrial Design who became part of a close-knit group of four friends. But it wasn’t until two years later that the pair grew closer and became an item. Now, 12 years later, after seeing each other through every milestone from graduation to first jobs, losses and triumphs, Weijie and Nicol are more than ready to take the next step in their relationship. The lovebirds tied the knot at The Singapore Edition, a unique and minimalist venue they fell in love with at first sight, surrounded by loved ones, in a joyful and personal celebration.
What was it that attracted you to each other?
Nicol: She was the first person that really broke me out of my introvertness, and her constant presence around me was something I never realised I needed, and over time, I grew to truly love and appreciate.
Weijie: I saw Nicol at orientation and thought he was a really cute bespectacled boy— my eye candy. Although we started as friends, I grew to love him as a person, and over time, I fell for him.
What do you love the most about your partner?
Nicol: As someone who was once a cynic (still am but much toned down) and found it hard to warm up to others, being with Weijie has truly changed my perspectives, to see the good in people.
One of the few qualities I deeply cherish is her ability to code-switch – moving from relying on me to taking charge when things get tough, to being open and always willing to try is what really endears me to her.
12 years together is quite a milestone, but it’s the everyday little things that we continue working towards that binds us closer together, and I know, no matter the seasons or situations we find ourselves in, Weijie will always have my back.
Weijie: I’ve seen him through so many different seasons — polytechnic, army, university, and our first jobs — and I still love every version of him. We’ve both grown so much as individuals and as a couple. I also love that he just knows what I need without me having to say a word; he makes me feel safe. Nicol lets me be my true self and isn’t afraid to tell me when I’m being difficult or unreasonable; he has a way of putting me in my place that helps me grow. I appreciate how he encourages me to chase my dreams and celebrates my achievements, no matter how small. He knows me better than I know myself and often gets me things even before I realise I need them.
What was your proposal like?
Weijie: On 11 November 2023, our 11th year together, Nicol took me to a beautiful restaurant for dinner. After our meal, he brought me to this room overlooking the city. He presented me with the most gorgeous flowers and an illustrated card featuring a bao and siu mai, saying, “Be my 点心,” which means “Be my dim sum.” This was particularly sweet because our pet names for each other are Bao (for Nicol) and Siew Mai (for me).
He went down on one knee and presented me with the most beautiful engagement ring. It featured a pearl and a yellow sapphire — symbolising Bao and Siew Mai, respectively. A bonus fact is that Nicol’s birthstone is the pearl and my birthstone is the sapphire.
Tell us about your wedding. Where was your wedding venue and what was your wedding theme?
Both: Our wedding venue was The Singapore Edition! When we entered the hotel, we just knew it was the place. We wanted a fresh and unique venue that wasn’t overdone, and as soon as we stepped in, we were struck by its clean, minimalist design, which perfectly matched the vibe we were looking for.
Theme wise, we wanted our wedding to feel personal and meaningful, highlighting the journey we’ve shared and the things we love. So, our wedding theme was essentially a celebration of us and our 12 years together. Instead of displaying our engagement photos at the reception, we chose to feature 12 photos— one for each year from 2012 to 2023. Each photo captures a memorable moment from that year. For instance, the 2013 photo features our polytechnic graduation, while the 2023 photo is a beautiful snapshot of our engagement. This selection not only highlights our journey together but also brings our guests along as we reflect on our growth over the years. We intentionally didn’t include 2024, as that year marks our wedding day, making it even more significant.
At the reception, upon registration, we presented our guests with Pokémon-inspired cards, offering 12 special cards to collect, each representing a different aspect of our journey together. This not only added a fun, nostalgic element to our celebration but also served as a clever way to inform guests of their table numbers. As for our table decor, we incorporated dim sum baskets filled with a bao and siew mai.
Take us back to your wedding day. What was the day like and how were you feeling?
Nicol: It was simply a mad rush, but it was necessary given the things we packed in for the wedding. If it’s anything, I just felt really blessed to have Weijie by my side throughout the entire process. Going through it together made all the difference.
Weijie: I was filled with adrenaline! I had the timeline in my head and kept a mental checklist to ensure I accomplished everything I wanted to do. I was having a lot of fun rushing around, just being my normal self. Nicol and my friends kept telling me to slow down, but I couldn’t help it!
What did your family/friends have to say about your wedding day?
Both: We had a friend narrate the event before we marched in, but once we entered, we took on the role of hosts. We went on stage and guided our guests through the journey of our 12 years together. We started with a montage showcasing our evolution over the years, followed by videos telling the story of how we met, and even shared a “proposal reaction” from Weijie’s friends.
Everyone loved that we were the emcees of the event; it made the atmosphere feel personal and intimate. Guests remarked how quickly time flew by, and they appreciated the unique seating arrangement — we opted for long tables instead of round ones, ensuring everyone had a great view of the stage.
Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding?
Nicol: There were two for me. The first was sealing the deal by finally putting on the ring on my wife’s finger and the second was during the march-in, where with some miscommunication between the banquet team and us, I had to open my own door to enter the ballroom with my wife.
Weijie: I can’t pinpoint just one favorite. I truly enjoyed every moment of the day.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?
Both: We learned that having a great support system makes wedding planning way easier. When your loved ones respect your vision, it takes the pressure off. In the end, it’s all about celebrating our love, not sweating the small stuff. Just keep it fun and focus on what matters!
