Shan and Jason’s Scenic Destination Pre-Wedding Shoot in Perth and Rustic Vineyard Inspired Wedding at Chijmes Hall Singapore

Shan and Jason’s pre-wedding shoot in Perth is truly breathtakingly romantic, and equally as dreamy was their wedding at the heritage building of CHIJMES.

Shan and Jason’s destiny was set in stone even without their knowing. You see, they initially thought they connected through a mutual friend when in actual fact, they had actually crossed paths once during their university days without even realising it. On 24 March 2018, the sweet lovers tied the knot in a beautiful, rustic vineyard inspired wedding at the heritage buildings, Alcove at Caldwell House and Chijmes Hall Singapore, but not before embarking on a romantic destination pre-wedding shoot to the scenic Margaret River in Perth.

Tell us more about how you met.

Shan: We were introduced through a mutual friend over dinner and drinks and no, it was not meant to be match-making session! But Jason was a gentleman and personally sent me home in a cab (despite the fact that my house was not at all on the way) and from then on, we kept in touch.

Ironically, after dating for some time, we later found out that years back, our paths actually crossed once while we were still staying in Sheares Hall at National University of Singapore. I was actually on a phone with him about some CCA matters but never met him face-to-face despite the fact that we stayed in the same hostel during our university days. I guess fate had a unique way of reuniting us again.

What do you love most about each other?

Shan: His silliness, goofiness and sense of humor. He has a way of making me laugh even when I’m angry with him. However, he is also very driven and can put on his serious hat when it came down to work or matters of concern.

Jason: Her dorkiness!

What was your proposal like?

Jason: I didn’t really think about making elaborate plans because I’m quite a simple and laid-back person by nature. Many months before we even arranged to travel to Europe, I’d already bought the diamond (without the setting) with the intention of proposing to her at a right time or place. When our Europe trip came along, I felt that it would be the right occasion to pop the question. The only setback was I left the setting of the ring way too late! Every jewellery brand I visited could not help to set the ring in time within 10 days (yes, I really left it that late) before the trip and that was when I really panicked.

Thankfully, I came across eClarity by chance, and they were not only able to rush the setting of the ring for me in time but had a very impressive array of unique designs to pick from which you can even further customise to your liking – an option that I still had despite the tight delivery timeline. Amanda, the owner, is an absolute gem to work with (no pun intended). I was so impressed by her service that we went back again to purchase our wedding bands. I honestly can’t thank her enough for ‘saving’ my life.

Shan: Very, very unexpected! It completely took me by surprise as we both hadn’t made plans on housing and so on, so I assumed he wanted to date for a while longer before we talked about marriage plans. I remembered feeling so shocked that I instinctively responded to his proposal by saying “Are you sure?” a couple of times before I said ‘Yes’. Once the surprise subsided, I furiously teased Jason because he didn’t give any short romantic speech before proposing. He essentially dropped to his knee while we were chilling at the hotel, opened the ring box and straight off asked me to marry him. Nonetheless, I was still very impressed that the design of the engagement ring was something that I genuinely love despite the fact that we had never gone ring shopping or browsing before.

Why did you choose to travel to Perth for your pre-wedding shoot?

Shan: I initially suggested that we could find a beautiful architectural spot in Singapore to do the shoot but Jason was pretty ‘terrified’ of shooting in the hot and humid weather. Hence, we decided to head to Margaret River, Perth during spring where the weather would be cooler. Furthermore, I also thought that it would be quite apt given that he proposed at Beaune, France – a Burgundy wine-making region as well.

Jason: As a couple, we enjoyed visiting vineyards during our travels, so I thought that a pre-wedding shoot to visit Margaret River in Perth could be an opportunity for us to enjoy a holiday trip at the same time.

Take us back to your pre-wedding shoot. Did you run into any obstacles or what were some of the memories that stayed with you from the shoot?

Shan: I remember being terribly cold during the coastal shoots! Although, I could tell Jason was enjoying the weather.

Jason: Trying our best not to burst out laughing during the shooting process was probably one of the things that stayed with me from the shoot.

Share with us your wedding planning journey. What were some of the challenges you faced?

Jason: Dealing with Shan’s bridezilla moments at times, haha! Admittedly, I’m pretty ‘administratively challenged’ so it probably didn’t sit well with her who can be quite picky about specific details. The trick was to be patient with the knowledge that it will come to an end eventually.

Shan: I had my hand in organising events during the course of my career so I prepped for my wedding in the same way – drafting a timeline and coordinating with different vendors. It helped that I had really good wedding coordinators from Chijmes – Alexa and Vicky, both whom were incredibly competent and efficient. I highly recommend them to any brides-to-be! Jason and I had some minor quarrels during the planning process due to differences in working style but I’m glad that he always tried his best to be patient.

Shan: We worked with our wedding stylist, Amperian, to create a vineyard-inspired wedding theme with rustic elements. I’m not super adventurous when it comes to colours so I stuck with traditional bridal palettes like cream, blush and muted pastels with my favourite rose gold colour as accents.

Take us back to your wedding day. What was the day like and how were you feeling?

Jason: It flew by too fast. But I remembered feeling really happy to have all our friends gather on this occasion which was what made the day extra special for us.

Shan: Super nervous but excited. The feeling was so surreal as the day literally just rolled by but I would also remember feeling so grateful and blessed by the love and well wishes from everyone.

Jason: I think the most memorable part of the wedding for most of our guests might have been our wedding emcee. He was a great deal of fun and entertainment for the guests as he was constantly belting out old-school hits (in a semi-drunk stage). Even my boss was impressed with his singing skills. A lot of our guests also enjoyed the performance of the live band we hired, two of whom doubled as our game emcees at the start of the banquet.

Shan: I had lots of friends who loved the ice cream pop up bar (Popbar) that we brought in for pre-dinner treats. In fact, the owner of Popbar told us quite a considerable number of guests went for multiple servings!

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?

Shan: There were too many moments! But if I had to pick one, it would be during the veiling process with my parents in the morning. I remember the tears just wouldn’t stop flowing out.

Jason: When Shan recited her vows. She did a good job of making them quite funny that I couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

Any words of advice for couples planning their wedding?

Shan: It may seem hard to ‘practice’ it but do try to enjoy the wedding planning process. It’s a once in a lifetime experience! Also, practice patience with one another when you can.

Jason: Be patient and giving with each other as much as you can. The wife is always “right”.
