Bringing The Ocean To The City at The Ritz-Carlton Spa

Designed to enliven the senses through evoking the true essence of the ocean and its healing benefits, The Ritz-Carlton Spa is a multi-sensory experience that will immerse you in a rejuvenating spa journey that brings the sea to you right in the middle of the city.

I was invited for a one-hour massage at the new, barely-a-year-old The Ritz-Carlton Spa and, despite my crazy schedule, I had to say yes. Given a choice of a Stress Relief Massage, Relaxation Massage, and the unique Hot Lapis Stone Massage, I chose the last one because its description sounded like a good combination of the first two – killing two birds with one (or many) Lapis Lazuli Stone!

As soon as I was led to the Spa entrance, I could immediately feel the difference in atmosphere from the bustling lobby, like a good spa should make you feel. The tree bark-inspired corridor that leads to the treatment rooms were inlayed with blue oyster glass, which was a modern touch to an otherwise typical dark ambience. The treatment rooms named after different types of exotic seaweeds, prized for their rejuvenating properties on the skin. If it weren’t for the calming piped-in music from the Spa, I would have started humming “Under The Sea”.

Before my treatment started, my therapist, Wendy, let me choose my essential oil for the day, and I went for the one with Lavender so that I could, hopefully, fall asleep during my treatment. We started with a short breathing exercise aided by the essential oil and with Wendy placing conch shells over my ears to get my body and mind in tuned with the sounds of the sea.

The Hot Lapis Stone Massage is a therapeutic and rejuvenating massage using warmed Lapis Lazuli stones and moderate to deep pressure to intensely soothe tired, aching muscles and aid relaxation. These vibrant blue semi-precious stones have known medicinal properties that are supposed to aid in the balanced functioning of the thyroid gland, strengthen the neck and vocal chords, and enhances mental function, alleviate tired muscles and promote deep relaxation.

Wendy had exceptionally strong fingers and taught me where to apply pressure to relieve the knots on the back of my shoulders. At some point, I had to tell Wendy to go softer, and I have a high threshold for (massage) pain. So if you like deep massages, you know who to look for at the Spa. Too soon, the hour ended just as I was about to fall asleep. I was kept awake by the back massage and the initial heat from the hot stones, but the ending head massage, which I love, almost led me to sleep in the warm seabed of Atlantica. All spas should have heated beds like this spa does.

I got out of bed and put on my swimsuit for a quick soak in the heated mineral pool that has soothing and healing properties. I spent a good hour using the facilities, which had relaxation rooms equipped with Zero Gravity recliners and Audio-Technica headsets, and an endless supply of chocolate, tea, and infused water. I didn’t even have to worry about my wet swimsuit because there was a SwimMate machine in the locker room that spin-dries your swim wear in less than 30 seconds.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers three signature spa experiences: Timeless Indulgence, which is performed by two therapists and includes the La Mer Miracle Broth™ facial with a pampering foot care regime; Cello Concerto, which is inspired by the love for classical music, so the body massage is harmoniously synchronised with ‘live’ melodies played by a cellist in the room with you; and Educational Spa Masterclasses, where you can learn the holistic art of massage to equip yourself with techniques to surprise a loved one.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore is also the first luxury hotel in Asia Pacific to partner with La Mer to offer the best in skincare and indulgent facial treatments. The coveted La Mer Miracle Broth™ facial, will be available exclusively at The Ritz-Carlton Spa. Men, don’t fret, because you can also look forward to a curated selection of massages specially designed with you in mind – targeting muscle recovery, stress relief, aid relaxation, and even a Men’s La Mer Custom Facial.

All in all, I had a wonderful time at The Ritz-Carlton Spa, and I sleep really well that night. I recommend the 60-min massages for busy brides and grooms who can only spare that much time for relaxation and stress relief, but still want excellent service.

The Ritz-Carlton Spa is at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, 7 Raffles Avenue, Singapore 039799, and open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The massages are priced from S$190 upwards, subject to prevailing service charge, goods and services tax.
