3 Super Simple Habits to Lose Weight Sustainably before Your Big Day
As the big day looms and that white dress hangs awaiting its debut, it is natural to want to look your best. Pick up these three super simple habits for an easy way to lose weight for your wedding, and see the kilograms drop off–and stay off!
We’ve all dreamed of being a vision on our wedding day that even a Disney princess would envy. For many of us, that dream leaves us wanting to lose one kilogram (or five) in order to feel fabulous. Regardless of whether you’re going with fishtail or A-line, white or ivory, you want that WOW factor when everyone turns around and sees you in your dress–especially your husband-to-be!
Of course, it can be tempting to jump head first into a crash diet that may leave you feeling svelte at the wedding, but 10 kilograms heavier by the honeymoon. The best way to lose weight before your big day, regardless of how much, is to do so in a way which is sustainable. This means that not only will you look incredible in that Vera Wang, but also in your bikini on your Maldives honeymoon, and in that extra special negligee on your wedding night!
There are millions of diet plans out there, from low carb, low fat, high protein, and so on. The best thing to do is to find a meal plan that is both healthy (filled with nutrient-dense fresh foods and without wonder pills or shakes) and suits you and your lifestyle.
Getting a healthy balance between food and exercise is key to weight loss, so finding an exercise routine that fits your schedule (hitting the gym, doing a few laps in the pool, or taking a spin class) is also important.
The problem that most people have when it comes to losing weight is not their action plan, but instead the tools they use to build this weight loss plan. And by tools I mean their habits!
The bad habits we accumulate over time when it comes to our relationship with food can be detrimental to successful weight loss and incredibly hard to break unless we identify and address them. Putting new, good habits into place needs to be part of your action plan, alongside your chosen diet and workout method. So, let’s take a minute to look at our habits and consider the three best tips and tricks to lose weight sustainably before the big day.
1. Eat Slowly
Most of us eat way too fast. We wolf down an entire main meal, sides, and a root beer before our stomaches have time to signal to our brains that we are full already.
What then? Well, you suddenly realise you’re totally stuffed, you’ve consumed way more calories than necessary, and your inevitable “food baby” descends, leaving you feeling about ready to explode!
SLOW IT DOWN.
Allow yourself time to enjoy the food you’re chewing, savour the taste and aroma, and allow your body to read its satiety cues. It will let you know when enough is enough! This way, without thinking about what you’re eating down to the smallest micronutrient, you are likely to naturally eat less calories.
2. Eat Until You’re 80% Full
There is an ancient Japanese term called hara hachi bu, which translated into English literally means, “belly 80 percent full”.
I know what you’re thinking: “How the heck do I measure when my stomach is 80% full?”
Well, this healthy habit kind of goes hand in hand with eating slowly. It encourages you to eat until you’re 80% full, rather than wait until you hit the 100% mark and your stomach is impending explosion.
In other words: Eat until you’re no longer hungry–not until you’re stuffed.
3. Plan Your Meals
A cookie here, a doughnut there. Hey, what harm can a couple of chips and a scoop of dip do, right?
We’re all guilty of this one. With today’s hectic society, it’s only on rare occasions that most of us sit down for a scheduled, prepared meal. Instead we graze away the day on snacks or buns from the bakery, and lose track of how many calories we are actually chowing down–and believe me, they add up quickly.
The best way to stay true to your intentions is to schedule your meals and plan them in advance. Even if this means in advance prep work and a fridge full of tupperware.
Even consider what beverages you are grazing on. It is easy to drink a sugary soda in seconds flat when you’re busy meeting deadlines in the office. Only to get to the end of the day and wonder, “How many soft drinks did I have today? Two? Three?”
Try to only drink water throughout the day, and if you need to meet that soda craving, schedule in a can with lunch so that you can keep track of your calories.
