Lay Lian and Kenneth’s Joyous Nuptials at Carlton Hotel Singapore

Secondary school sweethearts Lay Lian and Kenneth wed at Carlton Hotel Singapore in a cheerful and momentous celebration.

Pang Lay Lian, 33, Operations Executive, and Kenneth Lim, 34, Account Manager, met when they were budding teenagers. They never quite hit it off and parted ways after graduation. But fate clearly had other plans in store for both of them when they crossed paths again as adults nearly a decade later. One encounter led to another and the happy pair decided to take their relationship to the next level. They tied the knot in a cosy affair at Carlton Hotel Singapore on 29 November 2015.

Take us back to the day you first met each other.

Kenneth: It was 21 years ago. I was in Secondary Two while Lay Lian was in Secondary One. We got to know each other through mutual friends but we weren’t close because she felt I was rather arrogant. After graduation, we lost touch. Then, 11 years later, we ran into each other on Valentine’s Day and decided to reconnect through Friendster, and the rest is history.

How did you pop the question to Lay Lian?

I proposed to her during my 34th birthday celebration. We were celebrating with a group of close friends at Bliss House, a pretty restaurant at Clarke Quay Central. She was surprised when the waiter served her with a plate that had the words “Will you marry me?”. I gave a short speech, knelt down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.

Walk us through your wedding planning. Did you meet with any challenges along the way?

Our wedding planning was rather systematically done and relatively smooth-sailing. We wrote down all the things that needed to be done each month and proceeded accordingly until the big day. We had no arguments as we both agreed not to fuss over the small details. Our families were also very supportive during this time, giving us plenty of space and encouragement along the way. Since our bridal studio is located in Malaysia, we spent quite a fair bit of time in Johor Bahru. The consultants at Venus Bridal were extremely warm, sincere and helpful, making the entire process enjoyable.

How was the actual day like?

On our actual day, we had a bridal party of 16. All of them went out of their way to make our big day run smoothly. We barely had to worry about anything. All we did was to enjoy the day as much as we could. Our banquet manager, Michelle from Carlton Hotel Singapore was also an excellent help. She obliged and did her best to provide us with everything that we requested for. She was also extremely patient with our pair of toddler flower girl and page boy – and that left an impression on us.

What did your family and friends have to say about your wedding?

All our family and friends commented that our wedding was well organised and that the banquet “consisted of everything”. This was likely due to the entertainment we had prepared for our guests to enjoy during the reception. We had the usual canapés and drinks, as well as a photo-booth and a cupcakes and mini dessert bar.

Were there any particular moments during your wedding that were especially memorable or special to you?

I remember us sneaking a peak at our morning gatecrash video along with our guests before our second march-in. The video was playing just as we were getting ready outside the ballroom. As we had not seen it yet, we wanted to sneak a peek. Michelle and her colleague held the heavy doors of the ballroom slightly open and gave us a bench to sit on as we took a glimpse. They even made sure we kept hydrated as we enjoyed the video from where we were.
