Feast Your Senses on the Singapore GOURMETbus
The first of its kind in Asia, the Singapore GOURMETbus is a “moving dining experience” where you can feast your eyes on moving scenes of Singapore’s landmarks and your tastebuds on a gourmet spread, all at the same time.
The Singapore GOURMETbus is a luxury purpose-built coach with comfortable booths at the best window seats, where you can enjoy iconic Singapore views while tantalising your taste buds with local cuisine. We were invited to the intriguing dining concept’s launch last month at the Suntec Tourist Hub by the creative souls who brought us the Duck & Hippo tours.
The GOURMETbus is designed to give guests a unique fine dining and sightseeing experience, and seats 32 guests in funky striped booths along wide windows on its upper deck. It was a new culinary experience indeed, as we enjoyed our meal over a shortened version of the usual two-hour tour of the Singapore Flyer, Esplanade, Merlion Park, National Gallery Singapore, and Marina Bay Sands, with a hop-off intermission at Gardens by the Bay.
As we enjoyed the changing scenes in the window, we were served a taste of the Indo-Chinese cuisine available on the tours, prepared by one of GOURMETbus’ partners, IndoChine Group. Fresh, minty rice paper rolls stuffed with prawns went down a treat, along with crispy seafood and chicken spring rolls with a traditional Indochinese dip. We also got to sample partnering Soup Restaurant’s Samsui Ginger Chicken, a Cantonese dish of silkily steamed chicken that was delicious coated in the accompanying ginger sauce and wrapped in crisp lettuce. You might think that eating aboard a bus would spell some mishaps, but the waiters were sure-handed, and the driving skilfully smooth and at a controlled speed. Table arrangements were carefully thought out too, with cup holders for your drinks and anti-slip mats for the dishes.
The bus is equipped with projectors at each table, wireless speaker microphones, a sound system, and WiFi access, so it’s a great unique event space for a private wedding ceremony or engagement party. Why not shake up your celebrations with a moving venue, on a privately chartered tour that brings your guests to and from your solemnisation? They can sightsee and enjoy a cosy wedding reception aboard, while viewing your photos over tea.
The lower deck of the bus lends itself well to a more party type of atmosphere, with an easy lounge that seats 12, a drinks station, and a karaoke system. If you’re looking for something fun and different for a hen’s or stag night, you could have the whole GOURMETbus to yourselves, with food and drinks taken care of too, though the bus currently does not have an alcohol serving license. The events team is able to design an exclusive chartered tour that suits your event’s needs, and you can select food from the two fixed menus currently available.
Try out a tour with a romantic Dim Sum Lunch date from 1pm to 3pm, or an Indochinese Dinner show from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, on the GOURMETbus by 31 May 2016 and enjoy an early bird discount of 20%. Two other shows, the Singapore Brunch and the Peranakan Hi-Tea, will be rolled out later. The tours operate from Monday to Saturday, and is limited to 32 guests per show. Reservation with full payment must be made by 12 noon a day prior to the tour.
The Singapore GOURMETbus is located at the DUCK & HIPPO Hub in Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Blvd, #01-330. For more information, call 6338 6877, email [email protected], or visit their website at www.gourmetbus.com.sg.
