Cyn and Derrick’s Gatsby Wedding at Four Seasons Hotel
Jazzed up with glamorous gold and opulent feather accents, Cyn and Derrick’s Gatsby wedding at Four Seasons Hotel was an ode to to their love for The Great Gatsby.
Cyn Chua, 30, Marketing Manager, and Derrick Chan, 30, Business Development Manager, celebrated their love in a glamorous Gatsby wedding at Four Seasons Hotel. Glittering with gold sequins, Art Deco motifs, and lavish ostrich feathers, their Gatsby wedding on 26 July 2015 is sure to inspire!
How did the two of you meet?
Cyn: We met in Singapore Polytechnic. We were classmates and assigned to work in the same lab group during Year One. During Year Two, we had to choose our core subject, so we went to different classes, but kept in close contact. We finally got together after graduation. It was definitely not love at first sight for me because he had this long, straight hair that I didn’t fancy.
Derrick: I guess it was love after many sights. We grew closer and got to know each other more when we started working in the same lab group. I was 80% sure Cyn would be my life partner when we made it through my National Service. Then I became 100% (or even more) sure that she was the one during our long-distance relationship. Back then, I was studying in England, and she was just starting on her new job in Singapore. Different time zones and our busy schedules made it difficult to maintain our relationship, but I’m glad we pulled through.
Cyn: Same for me! Plus he accepts all my bad habits and weird quirks – it’s important I can still be myself in the relationship.
What was the proposal like?
Cyn: On our 8th dating anniversary, Derrick surprised me with a trip to Bali. I was told to pack my luggage one day before our departure. He had booked our stay at the gorgeous Bulgari Hotels & Resort, where I had always wanted to go for a secluded retreat. On our second night, he arranged a romantic dinner by the cliff, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Halfway through the dinner, he came towards me and went down on one knee.
Tell us about your wedding theme.
Cyn: The theme was Great Gatsby, because I love the movie. Our favorite colours are black and gold so it was perfect for the theme! After our online research and discussion with the styling team, we decided to use ornate gold frames with little notes hanging on them as our guestbook. The ballroom stage was beautified with soft tulle and fairylights, and the aisle stands were decorated with white feathers. Our wedding stationery was also designed in the Art Deco style to fit the theme. The only thing that I handmade was the menu card stand, which I learnt from the Martha Stewart Weddings website. It was a very easy origami fold!
What was your wedding day like?
Cyn: The wedding day started with gatecrashing and it was fun watching our friends being so sporting in all the games. One of the games required Derrick and his groomsmen to take a picture with lemon slices in their mouths, post it on Facebook, and get 99 “Likes”. They failed the challenge and were penalised with push-ups to make up the difference in “Likes”. Derrick also came with a fortune cat piggy bank (filled with coins, of course) as one of the red packets for my bridesmaids!
Derrick: We had a quick photo session with our entourage at Singapore Polytechnic. Instead of going to a garden or park, we decided to have the photo shoot there because it is a significant place for all of us – it is where we all met and became best of friends. Thanks to our capable entourage and the hotel staff, everything went smoothly. Our guests were also punctual—in fact, most came earlier than expected—and we could start the dinner on time.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding?
Cyn: During our thank you speech, Derrick gave me a huge bouquet of 99 roses. I was touched and for this sweet gesture, I would give him 99 likes. It’s okay that he failed his mission in the morning!
