The Tiffany Difference

The iconic Tiffany Blue Box has come to represent the fine jeweller’s design excellence and exacting standards of quality, and the engagement ring inside it is bound to make hearts beat faster. A Tiffany engagement ring is so coveted because Tiffany diamonds are famed for their brilliant sparkle and intense fire. While some jewellers may compromise beauty for carat weight, Tiffany always chooses to maximise a stone’s natural beauty, even if its carat weight must be sacrificed. That’s why a Tiffany diamond sparkles with such intense fire and scintillation, and has a dazzling light that can be seen from across the room.

Engagement Ring and Wedding Bands 2011

Created by gifted craftsmen drawing from a rich design heritage, Tiffany engagement rings are utterly captivating. For this important moment, a Tiffany ring promises pure perfection. Tiffany’s expert geminologists pursue diamond perfection with a passion, and they subject every diamond to an exhaustive evaluation before selection. A rare 0.02% of the world’s diamonds is graded fine enough to be crafted into Tiffany’s designs. To create the most beautiful jewellery on earth, Tiffany subjects its diamonds to strict diamond standards that go well beyond the popular but oversimplified 4Cs.

The precise shape and positioning of a diamond’s facets is the most important factor in creating its beauty. Tiffany diamonds are cut to maximise each stone’s natural beauty, and the crown, table, pavilion and facets are always perfectly aligned. The result is a dazzling diamond that catches the light from every angle.

Ideally, an engagement ring diamond is clear to the point of being colourless, the better to reflect the happiness sparkling in the bride’s eyes. At Tiffany, only diamonds of “I” level (near colourless) or better are accepted.

The clarity of a diamond refers to the extent of its flawlessness, and correlates directly to its value. A flawless stone is one that, under 10-power magnification, shows no visible internal flaws (clouds, feathers, pinpoints) or external imperfections (scratches, pits, nicks). Diamonds are rated according to a industry-standard clarity scale, however, when Tiffany believes that a stone’s clarity is borderline between two grades, Tiffany always gives that diamond the lower grade.

Carat Weight

The term “carat” is used to denote the weight of a gem, and 1 carat equals 0.20 grams. Diamonds are measured to 1/1000th of a carat at Tiffany. Two diamonds of equal weight can vary widely in price because of their differences in quality. At Tiffany, quality and beauty are paramount. Tiffany diamond cutters never compromise a diamond’s brilliance for carat weight.

Tiffany has additional quality standards that exceed the 4Cs, collectively called a diamond’s “presence.” Precision of cut reflects a master diamond cutter’s craft and his ability to create the perfect facets of a brilliant Tiffany diamond. Symmetry involves the correctly proportioned cuts that avoid the appearance of off-center tables and culets, deformed facts and wavy or non-parallel girdles and tables. To ensure that a diamond’s beauty is accentuated, Tiffany also insists on a high polish rating.

The gifted craftsmen at Tiffany draw on 177 years of a rich design heritage and creativity to inspire today’s masterpieces, bringing their passion to every little detail. For each diamond, a setting is carefully customized to accommodate its individual size and shape.
