I am about to file for my divorce and so is one of my girlfriend. Thing is, her spouse is a Christian and he has cited that God forbids divorce. So she's now stuck and do not know what to do but she definitely want to seek a divorce. Has anyone encountered such similar cases before?

junkie: lolz...

samantha: gg by her logic, that means all christians cannot divorce liao...also means that none of the divorcees out there are christians hahaha..

I agree to your comments and thought this "reason" is not rational nor logical. I am here looking for some suggestions as to how this dear friend of mine should handle the situation. Hate to see her miserable and feel trapped in an unhappy marriage

Samantha,

she just need to go for a separation... when u want a divorce, opinions doesn't get u the divorce. she will spend 1 yr getting all the reviews before coming back to the need to start on the action.

He can cite all kind of reasons, it doesn't mean she needs to give him perfect reasons for her to get a divorce. Just go for separation as Powder suggested.

I told her the same thing BUT her spouse must agree to sign the DOS too, right? She wants out so desperately that she's thinking of committing adultery. How sad is that?!

She cried and commented that she wished her case is as simple as mine and I feel helpless not being able to help her.

Samantha, she could go on judicial separation, three-year separation or four-year separation.

For civil marriages in Singapore, there is no such thing as cannot-divorce. There will be a way but some ways may be harder than others.

I believe, if I had understood Biblical teachings correctly, God does not like divorces but He permits divorces.

adultery doesn't help leh....

first thing she should do is talk to a lawyer... and not talk to pple like u and me. u can divorce if u want to, just need to give it 4yrs if i'm not wrong.

samantha: Ur fren should seek legal advice, rather than believe her husband (whom she wants to leave). I dont think any religion forbids pple from getting a divorce, just tat no religion encourages a divorce.

I have no intention to be mean, but it is kinda amusing. Given that its a divorce, not annulment, it would mean that both u n ur fren have been married for awhile. I dont presume that the both of u are teenagers or in ur early 20s, so there's no reason y grown up girls should be upset over smthg without even finding out the facts. If my husband were to tell me smthg like that, i would laugh in his face n maybe whack his private part with a bible.

I'm not a Christian but based on what i have heard, the only thing that is fiercely enforced is that u can only wed in church once. So if u are a Christian with a church wedding n u get a divorce, u cannot step into church for ur 2nd marriage.

Honestly, spend abit of $ to get legal advice or just go online to read the law statues. I would recommend direct legal advice though, cos sometimes its easier to have a trained professional explain the procedure of divorce to u. No point being so upset n trapping urself in a situation without making a real effort to understand the facts.

Yep, your gf committing adultery won't help simply because the if the husband does not apply for divorce based on this, there will be no case; no divorce. She can't apply for divorce on her own infidelity count.

By the way, there is no need to sign DOS to start separation (except for judicial separation).

You may be jesting but in case you meant it, I just have to say that offensively attacking a man's delicate organ is such a low blow (no pun intended).

to quote from Matthew Chapter 5:
31 - It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 - But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

If you are to search online for bible sites for keyword divorce... there are numerous mention of divorce.

Just ridiculous.

If you want a divorce, who would care about God? If you so scared of god, then don't divorce lor.

don't even need any legal advice. No need to sign DOS. Just disappear and separate from him. At the very most, after 4 years, file for divorce. As simple as this. Don't have to worry about it at all.

And please, adultery don't help at all. Unless you really want to super-piss off hb by having sex with a man right in front of the hb.. otherwise, just separate.. and wait for time to divroce.

"God" is there only as a guide. People always misuse it's name for every little things.

The real "God" is in yourself. Only you have the power to do and to decide the next course of action.

E.g. it's not any divine forces that puts your meal on your table, you studied, you slog at your cubicle and you earn your keep to put food on your table. Nothing to do with watever "God"

Unless your "God" let you kenna Toto, 4D, Soccer every time you bet. Than this is divine intervention and you can credit it to "God" if not, dun mention about it.

alvin aka TPK,

ur attempt to demonize every single one here seeking/supporting a divorce is a worrying sign and i fear for ur mental health... come on, dun be so bitter. u're mental and it's SCARY...

I never know "SKY" got eyes. It is just a concept people use to scare people into doing bad things.

If "SKY" got eyes.. where.. where?

Or SKY likes to see people suffer, commit murder, earthquake.. tsunami.. those more more interesting rather than looking at someone deciding on a divorce

i agree with roger.. we work hard for wat we have today...

is boils down to wat u want to believe...

Ha ha I did not mention any particular group of people.

So the first thought that came through your mind is Christians?

This shows that indeed some groups have the tendancy to put "God" in watever little things they do.

Dear all

I'm so sorry that my question has sparked and evolved into some disagreements.

Back to the topic... My friend wanted to get out of this marriage in the shortest time rather than have a separation of 3 years cos she feels it's a plain waste of time. Not that she has someone else but she wants to move on cos she's already nearing 40. I guess I'll get her to see a lawyer real soon to get all her questions answered.

I don't think you can get it fast.. unless it is for unreasonable behaviour.. but it is not easy.. or the hb has committed adultery and she has evidence.

Else, just separate from him and wait..

Hi Samatha, I can empathize tat sometimes a marriage can be so bad tat a person wishes to be 'released' from it soonest possible. But sadly, a marriage is a union agreed upon by both parties. So, if ur fren's husband has not done anything terrible wrong based on society's standards (such as abuse, adultery etc), ur fren will have to endure 3yrs separation for her divorce to be finalized. She can move out now n start the 3yrs separation. At least tat will protect her sanity n make her feel happier. Her husband has no right to trap her in the marriage cos it takes 2hands to clap. I really feel kinda irritated when pple anyhow quote religion to back their selfish intentions.
