The hotel is quite near to the interlaken west station but of course if you can get accomodation at interlaken ost that would be better.

Jungfrau may look cold becos of the glacier but it's actually quite warm as it's near the sun. When I was up there, I was perspiring and took out my jacket and got a very bad sunburn as I walked on the glacier for more than 2 hours (to & fro) was we treked to this mountain cabin a distance away. So make sure to put sunblock.

blushblush : Oic! Thanks so much for ur info!

blushblush : do u by chance got any spare maps of zurich, luzern and interlaken to give me? I went down switzerland embassy, they dont have maps! just some brochures with a small small map area of the city.

Germangirl: Luzern is made up of several cantons am i right? These are what i surf upon :

Ebikon
Hildisrieden
Horw
Kastanienbaum
Kriens
Luzern
Meggen
Nottwil
Rigi Kaltbad
Rothenburg
Sörenberg
Vitznau
Weggis

May i know which area is close to the centralised of Luzern (town area) whereby is convenient to get around and near train station?

I'm sorry but I do not have any extra maps. As I went F&E, I got all my maps from the train stations. All their main stations would have a 'customer service' counter so you can get the maps there. The people there are very friendly so dont' worry.

If you're going F&E, you can also take a small booklet with all the schedules for the train to&fro from all the other connecting stations then you can plan your day better as you can also see how long it took to reach a place.

I_bless_u

When you board their train, you got to make sure that the seat you want is not reserved as the selected seats may be reserved with a small fee.

DOn't worry about having no seats as some of their trains are double storeys

blushblush: Oic..thanks. All ur rails tix is bought fr there? U reseved seats at the station too?

I intend to buy fr tavelex here as i going paris and spain as well. So i will buy a 5 days 3 countries pass. Long journey like swiss to paris or paris to barcelona then i will make reservation in advance.

hi blush,

can i check with u where do u get the booklet with the schedules of the trains n their timing? do i download from the website or i can get it from the train station?

hi gals,
is there any sunday market activity in zurich on a sunday? my last sunday will be spent in zurich. it seems to me that zurich is a commercial n office area. so not sure if i shd travel out od zurich on sunday then.

Hi Cin,

the little booklet is either lying around in stacks in several places at the train station (in larger train stations) or you can ask for it at the ticket counter, the information desk or the tourist information.

The flea market on Bükliplatz in Zürich is on Saturdays, and I couldn´t find any other market open on sundays. But the museums are open, so you could visit the kunsthaus, a big artmuseum, for example.

www.zuerich.ch got all events and sights listed in english as well. Or you could take a ride on a steamer on lake zürich if the weather is nice.

Hi Jenny,

the swiss pass is a travel pass for the swiss train system which gives you unlimited travel and discounts in some places such as museums, Jungfraujoch, glacier express, etc.

It exists in 1st and 2nd class and it is not really worth getting first class. The difference is usually not that great between first and second class and you safe quite a bit of money.

Since you will be travelling as a couple, it might be better for you to get the swiss saver pass or the swiss saver flexipass. Rates and details are under:

www.raileurope.com

Here what I found about the swiss saver flexi pass on that page:

Hi I bless you,

there is Luzern the town, and Luzern the canton. If anybody refers to a place called Luzern, chances are that he means the town rather than the entire canton. The places you listed are basically small towns and villages in the area.

The lake luzern borders on 4 cantons: canton Luzern, canton Obwalden, canton Uri and canton Schwyz.

Canton Luzern is one of the bigger cantons in central switzerland.

To be sure a hotel is in Luzern town rather than just the canton, just have a ook at the address:

6003 Luzern, LU is in Luzern Town

but

6040 Some other name, LU

is a place in the canton of Luzern, but outside the town. LU behind the places name stands for the canton.

Germangirl: Sunny Days - Bed & Breakfast,at Helvetiastrasse 29 3800 Unterseen, issit convenient? Near Interlaken Ost station? I cant click on the map.

Hi I bless u,

I couldn´t find the address of sunny days on any of the maps, but Unterseen is a town/district bordering at Interlaken town.

I tried to find it on www.interlakentourism.ch, but couldn´t find the B&B in the list.

In their list of Hotels/Holiday apartments/Hostels/B&B´s the general location is indicated and usually you can see it on a pop-up map.

I found this one for example:

Appartmenthaus Orion, location: near Interlaken Ost

Studio apartments with kitchen in a swiss style house, prices from 30/35 swiss francs per person, per night.

on www.sunnydays.ch they don´t provide a map or directions that I could find, but I guess it would be good to send them an email with availability request and asking for the best way to get there from the station. They say it´s 5 min from the center... Are you intending to book this B&B directly or via an agent?

Hi touraco,

Basel is very nice and I also like Schaffhausen with it´s "waterfalls" of the river Rhine.

You will find beautiful places all over Switzerland, I like Neuchatel, very scenic!

Or if you like "Heidi" : Maienfeld, where Heidi boarded the train going to Frankfurt ;-)

For inforamtion on the whole of Switzerland I found the lonely planet book very useful. My husband´s roommate from university left his book to me when he left and I wished I would have had it earlier!

This was my personal wedding gift for them - a ring pillow with their names. the date and a red rose, since they had decided on red roses for most of the decoration.

HI Germangal,

it's a beautiful wedding..reminds me of Spain cathederals leh...

btw, your friend is the guy or the lady..?

Hi Jenny,

my friend is the lady, she is swiss, but her family came from Ethiopia. Actually quite a common sight in Geneva, but she would stand out in the german speaking part.

Her husband is half italian/half italian-speaking swiss. So a lot of guests came directly from italy and many didn´t know any french. The guests from his father´s side had lived in the french speaking part of Switzerland for a long time and had trouble speaking Italian, and of course there was the family coming from Ethiopia of whom many only spoke Amharic...

Thankfully they had a great DJ, fluent in both italian and french. It is a tradition in Italy to eat A LOT in weddings, so we had an 8-course menue (originally they had planned on 10 courses!) and I am not talking small portions!

We had lots of games and traditions from all three countries: in the beginning all the africans gathered around the bride and groom and sang a wedding song, then the guests settled at the tables and when the couple made their entrance we were twirling our napkins and cheered(italian tradition)after a lot of dancing she threw her bouquet to the group of unmarried women and her husband threw her garter to the bachelors. Then we kept dancing until 4 am! Good that the restaurant was situated in the middle of a forest at a lakeside...

Hi I bless u,

We stayed in Sunny days during our visit last month......It is near to interlaken west station, about 7-8 mins walk from station. I can send you the map & picture taken from their balcony if you want.......Try to book room 5 or 6 (located on 2nd level), both rooms has balcony facing Jungfrau mountain. The rooms are not as spacious as what you see in the website but very clean..

Germangirl: I intend to book all accomodation by myself thru' the net.

whitebear: Oic, but is it convenient to go to the city area of interlaken? I thought that interlaken ost is more convenient than west station?

hi gals,

i will be going to switzerland next fri. i have not get my swiss rail tickets yet.i would like to check with u gals if its better to get it here in spore first in advance or just get it at the station when i have reached there? Is there actually any difference?

cin: I going Swiss/Paris/Spain

I book some of my hotel in swiss fr www.hrs.de
I chose those hotel dont need credit card as gaurantee but i must reach there b4 6pm if not they will release the booking.

cin: U going next week right? R u able to get me some useful maps, preferably with those hotel listings as well in Swiss?

Thanks!

cin: Zurich i booked Arlette beim Hauptbahnhof,Germangirl told me this hotel is quite near train station fromt he map she analyse.

Interlaken i am still searching. But i heard fr some ladies here who stay Sunny Days Bed & Breakfast and commended not bad. Is at Interlaken west station.

Paris: I booked Corail Hotel which is near to Gare de Lyon Rail station cos i be taking Eurorail fr Interlaken to Paris. This hotel not so bad. Cos from the map i see quite near to the train station and i oso emailed the hotel and ask. Quite cheap abt 68Euro per night for a double. U can go to the website and book.

http://www.hotel-paris-corail.com/English-hotel/TheHotel.htm

My friend who have backpacked b4 few times in europe, she told me i can go to whichever country train station which i touch down and enquire if there is any homestay nearby anot, she says lots of homestay in europe. Pretty cheap as well...which she does that always.

cin: Also if u happen to buy anything in Europe, always get tax rebate form fr them (every shop) then go to the last departure airport that u be going, get the tax rebate there IN CASH. My gf says she told them she wanna rebate back thru her credit card and she havent got back any yet till now! 1 mth already.
Whatever things u buy and wanna claim tax, must carry in hand, if u check in ur stuff with ur luggage, they can dont let u claim, cos they sometimes request to see the things u buy b4 they let u claim. Heard must spend Euro90 and above for each item if u buy then can claim tax

Hope all these is helpful to u though i havent go Europe myself yet!
Haha!

Cheers.............

hi bless,

thanks for the great help! its 68 euro per person. nevertheless, its still cheaper than the one i have found n the best part is its near the train station.

i will pass u the contacts of the hotels before i leave so that u can take a look too. i try to pm u, but was rejected. can u send me an email at [email protected]?

thanks!
