Newest Postings

Hi Spring,
Actually if you click on Newest Posting you can see all the latest threads according to alphabetical order.

Hi Spring,

Thank you for your suggestion. Acutally, by clicking on Newest Postings, which is available on the left side of the forum, the result will be arranged according to the most active topic within the last 24 hours.

We've listed the topic according to alphabetical order to allow easier searching for relevant topics for visitors.

By arranging the topics in alphabetical order and together with "Newest Postings", users get to find topics in the way they are comfortable with.

Chin Leng.

Hi Summer,

Hi Chin Leng,

Clicking on "Newest Postings" does not solve the problem. What most people would want to view is to go inside a main category (eg, Home and Deco, or Matters of the Heart) and see the topics arranged in descending of the latest postings.

Your argument of "We've listed the topic according to alphabetical order to allow easier searching for relevant topics for visitors." does not hold at all. Imagine these 2 topics : "Anyone knows where to buy wedding bands" and "Where to buy wedding bands"; this forum's naive method of alpabetical sorting will result in these 2 topics being placed poles apart.

The new generation of forums on the Internet offer much more flexible sorting mechanisms and allow users to find what they want faster. Here are some fine examples :

http://forums.hardwarezone.com/index.php
http://www.graphicschat.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=
http://sony2.infopop.net/3/OpenTopic/page/

The SingaporeBrides forum should seriously migrate to these new generation of forum platforms. The current platform which this forum is based on is really way too outdated.

For a start, I would like to recommend this software : http://www.infopop.com/products/ubbclassic/

Chin Leng, I have a suggestion.... currently, when we click on Newest Posting, we see eg, "144 discussions have new messages." However, I find this info not useful at all,.... afterall messages 24 hours old are constantly removed from this section.... eg it could be 144 new messages now but at the next minute, 146 new messages,... and out of these 146 messages, 140 was from the 144 messages, and 6 new messages were added.... but we would not be aware that 6 new mesages have come in... instead we think that only 2 new messages have come in..... am i confusing u?

anyway, my point is it's more useful to know newest posting was posted at HH:MM:SS... so that we know new messages have been added since we last went out of the site/last refreshed.

if u need clarification, i'd be most glad to help u....

Hi,

I agree that the newest postings are not very useful as your chat room is too popular!

How about adjusting them to different topics and readers can go into another pg which shows the forum topic, click on the topic, then shows all the postings for that topic.

Now that the list is so long, its very hard for me to trace a particular one that i want, i have to scroll to somewhere , say mid page, and search for the topic i want.

it will be gd if you can re-organise everything to be in a more orderly manner.

Just my thoughts.

Hi Obride and Eve,

You may like to try the function in "Search By: Days".

By using the two criteria highlighted in the screen-shot above, you'll be able to reduce the search results displayed and easier for you to find the new postings and topics that you are interested.

Thank you for the feedback and we appreciate it. We'll constantly seek ways to improve the forum and make it a more pleasant experience when you are visiting SingaporeBrides.com.

i see.. thanks Chin Leng....

only problem is its VERY slow.... i checked at 7.15am, 8.15am, 8.45am. I think the first time will be slow, that i think is acceptable,... but the latter 2 times is slow too! and it's only half hour/1 hour between the checks.... is there anything that can be done about the speed, besides changing our internet connection (i'm already using broadband)?

Hi Obride,

Yes, you are right that it was slow during the morning and even NOW if you were using some of the other functions in the forum.

The slowness was not related to your connection. It was due to the recent increase of traffic in the forum. We are currently seeking ways to improve the performance of the forum further. We are also currently considering the option of upgrading the hardware again (we just did it 6 months ago!).

However, all the options do take time to evaluate and implement. We are so sorry about the delay. You may like to continue using the "Newest Postings" function for the time being first. This function is less affected by the increase in traffic as most of the system resources have been channeled to this function. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Regards,
Chin Leng - the stressed technical support.

Hi Obride,

No problem at all. We love to receive feedbacks and requests to make the forum better. Just that sometimes some of the implementations take a while to be completed. Especially for new features request, testings will be required... and that can take a long long time!

Anyway, we just tweaked the system. You may like to test the search with criteria function I mentioned in my earlier posting again. Hopefully, it is much faster now. I've just tried it, it seems to be faster. However, this was tested during lunch hour and the user traffic is generally lower... as most people have gone makan!

Hi Chin Leng,

I clicked on the last 12 hours link but I did not get the Dec 02 brides thread even though I just posted a msg this morning. Can you chk? Thanks.

Hi! I have a suggestion.

Have you been to icered.com?

I like the way they arrange the forum topics.
Topics are not arranged in alphabetical order.
Topics with the latest postings are right on top.

This way, topics which are dead (like, say, 1st quarter Walk-in-Selection for 2002) will be buried right at the bottom. And topics which have recently received a new posting will appear right on top. How about that?

Yours sincerely,
-nad-

Hi Nad,

Thanks for the suggestion. However, our current forum structure actually incorporates both features: Topics arranged in alphabtical order and showing the current active topics.

For forum users looking for specific topics, it is easier for the visitor to look for them since the topics are arranged in alphabetical order in the various categories. This will also prevent too many duplicated topics from being created.

For forum users who would like to participate in the current active topics, this is available by choosing the option under New Messages on the left side of the forum as illustrated below. The search results will provide you the current active topics for the last 12 hours, 24 hours or 3 days.

That way, the forum is able to cater both groups of users.

Hi Chin leng, the current arrangemt suits me perfectly. but sometimes, when i check 4 new messages after 24 hours but less than say 48 hrs, i will hv to select the 3 days option... sometimes there r too much msg if i use the 3-days option... how abt doing away w/o the last 12 hrs since if we select the last 24 hrs, the messages we see r still not that much. istead include a last 36/ 48 hrs? juz a thot.. =)

Hi Sunnieflower,

Thank you for the suggestion. The current 3 available selections are chosen because they are the most commonly used search criteria. The last 3 days is usually used on Monday whereby users go back to work and visit the forum again so that the results of Saturday and Sunday can be shown as well.

For other search criteria, you can actually click on Search By: Days, available on the left side of the forum, and you'll be able to customise your search criteria in terms of days, hours and even minutes.

ohh... thks chin leng... i guess i am still very new here... i din even noe tt i can hv the option of choosing my search criteria... thks a million! =)

Hi Chin Leng,
How do i make a new posting category for posting? For eg if i want to set a new category about chinese calligraphies, how do i do that under Home and Deco?

Hi Jus_me,

Near the bottom of the list of topics in "Home and Deco", there is a link "Start New Thread". Click on it and you'll be able to start a new topic.

Hi Chin Leng,

I suggest that threads with the latest posts be moved on top automatically, instead of arranging the threads based on alphabetical order. Alternatively, allow us to do a filter on the header eg Timestamp.
In this way, it's easier to see which threads contain "fresh" posts.
Thanks!

Hi Oceandeep,

You may like to consider using the following search function readily available on the navigation menu. Just click on last 12, 24 or 72 hours link available on both the top and bottom navigation bar and you'll receive the results of the active threads in the respective time frame.

Regards,
Chin Leng.
