Need advice on buying diamond and ring separately

Hello people, I've been dating my gf for 3 years now and I'd like to marry this woman.

I'm no expert on engagement rings and my friends are extremes, either too rich or slightly below average, so their advices doesn't seem to suit my level. Therefore, I would like to humbly seek some pointers here.

My budget is max 10k.

1. Do people buy diamond and ring separately?

2. If yes, my plan is to buy a ring from any designer jeweler, eg. Tiff.co, Cartier, Bvlgari, Harry Winston etc, then buy a diamond and set on the ring.

3. If yes, does these designer jeweler sell rings for this purpose?

Hi, why u want to buy rings frm the designer jeweller? U looking at design or their brand? If jus design, go smaller bouquite jewler and they can customise just as well.

1. Yup. For me I buy loose diamond and then i choose the design of the ring.
2. Are you going for branding? not sure, if they sell diamond and ring separately.

I think I've decided to not get from designer. They are over my budget and also from other threads and forums mentioned that their diamonds might not be any better than others.

However, from the sources I've read, so much has been mentioned about JP(JannPaul). I'm curious if there are other trustworthy jewelers in Singapore besides JP.

Any recommendations?

there are people who buy ring and diamond separately.. but i believe you need to have the diamond before you can finalize the ring setting for it.

why would you want the ring to be from the big name brands and diamond from elsewhere? if you want quality, go for non-branded directly.. if you want branded, then choose the entire ring (+diamond) from the luxury brand.
or if you just like the branded ring designs, you can customise the same design elsewhere..

two of my friends gotten their rings from Fairies Inc. Not bad too! They're smaller (and has less manpower) than JannPaul, so less known. But pricing and service-wise, comparable..

Actually I've also posted my queries on other forums, but it seems people only goes to JP or some online diamond sites.

My husband purchased the diamond and did a customized setting for my engagement ring at Yuen Tung (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yuen-Tung-Wah-Kee-Gems-Jewellery/210363159134?sk=timeline). We also had our wedding bands made there. I'd say the workmanship is good and prices are fairly reasonable. And they did a really decent job of replicating the design that my husband drew =) If you're interested I can share a picture of it heh.

My only gripe is, they charged me $50 extra when I had to resize the ring! haha =/
