Migrating overseas...

Hi people, just wondering... is anyone of you here contemplating or planning towards migrating overseas instead of remaining here in Spore? I am kinda toying with the idea and I believe these are big moves and require lots of planning ahead and knowledge on what we are sticking into, thus would like to start gathering info and work towards the move.. Please feel free to contribute your ideas/experiences..

the possibility of moving is always there for me due to the fact that my husband is not local. at the moment, we're content to stay in singapore but it depends on his job (in end 2008, he was offered to move to paris but we declined) and whether one day, he might just decide that he's had enough and wants to go home.

when that day comes, it'll be a big deal not only to me but for all of us .. my husband having to get used again to how things run in his country, me having to get used to a new way of life and the kids having to deal with the upheaval - it's not just going to be a new environment for them, everyone speaking in a different language, leaving firm friends and of course the maternal side of the family behind.

it also depends on where you are thinking of migrating too .. many countries have criterias you need to fulfill before you can move there.

I'm a migrant. And yes there's definitely alot of factors to consider prior moving. Taxes, local culture, suburbs report (renting or buying?) mortgage interest is sky rocket compared to Singapore, language (including local slangs), local education system (private or public), jobs opportunity, health insurance, transport system and etc. When i first came to Australia, it took me awhile to adjust to their pace and way of life (no weekend late shoppping), lots of cheap booze, i find their culture and language is interesting. Though we speak the same Queen but their interpretation on certain words is different. Basically observe and be equipped with local knowledge. Also, many migrants tends to stay within their community whereas i chose to mix with the locals. It's your choice.

Overall, there's good and bad to migrate. Alot of stepping out of your comfort zone and starting from scratch, all over again. To make new friends, know the local, suburb security, no-no zone, food (be prepared to cook local cuisine with new ingredients), pay heaps of money to succumb to your local food cravings, i found that when i first got pregnant, crave for alot of fishball mee pok (it costs more to get local food in overseas usually, and it's not outstanding).Family separation and emotional struggle, it's up to individual. I was estatic when my family came to visit but i struggle heaps when they left. I thank God for my hubby's and his family's suppport to get me back on track.

Migration involves a very open-mind and positive attitude, it also differ if it's a single, couple or family move. There's no perfect world but you can chose the kind of world you want to live in. There is always good and bad in all countries. Visit the country's website and travel to your nominated country (my personal recommendation) for a period. Do heaps of research on visa rules and requirements cos it takes a bloody long time. It's a massive move. Good luck

Hi, i came back from UK now working in singapore. Migration is alwis an option to me. i studied in aust b4 and my family is in aust. thus i would prefer to go to aust 1 day. migration involves alot of red tapes and the process can be long, and tedious.

ppl alwis tell me , u come to singapore to earn money, not to live in forever. when u hv earn enough and would want to live a slower -paced and peaceful life, then u gotta leave.

tax is low in singapore. whereas countries like uk,aust and canada are high. but they provide free education n healthcare. in singapore, education is not free, and healthcare cost is high. working life is demanding, most of the time u left with very little time for your family. thats the pros n cons.

ya, malls close very early in western countries. no a prob bcoz they emphasize on work-life balance. ppl working in malls can go home early like us and also enjoy equal family life.

good luck to u :-)
