Have you been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight/body fat?
Many of us turn to exercise, skipping meals, cutting down on carbohydrates in order to lose our excess weight. Doing these things does bring results, but why does our weight go through a yo-yo cycle?
All of us definitely need to incorporate exercise into our lifestyle. The problem most of us face is that we hardly have time to do so given our stressful and hectic schedules. More importantly, we feel so hungry after exercising that we consume more calories than we burn during our workout.
I am personally not fat, I was just chubby and looking for a way to lose the excess fat around my tummy and thighs. I have tried all of the above: exercising, skipping meals, and cutting down on my rice and bread intake, but my weight and fat level just didn't go down.
It wasn't until I started on this program 3 years ago and learnt more about my body that I understood why those methods did not work.
It is true that cutting down on carbohydrates will help to lose weight. But it is also a fact that all of our bodies do need a certain amount of carbo everyday. What about those of you who die die need to eat rice? My mum and I for instance, we cannot step into a bakery and NOT walk away without buying any bread. But those are all carbs! The key to successfully losing weight is in controlling your portions. This is a habit that you need to pick up over time.
My family used to have a habit of skipping meals by eating only 2 meals a day sometimes. But when you skip meals, you are actually slowing down your body metabolism. When that happens, whatever food you put into your body after that will be stored as fat and not be burned. This is why those of us who only eat 1-2 meals per day are not losing weight like we thought we should!
Food is so readily available everywhere now, with all the 24-hour food outlets within walking distance. What we don't understand is that the food we get outside is HIGH IN CALORIES, HIGH IN FAT, but LOW IN NUTRITION. What is the long-term result of that?
According to statistics in The Straits Times in 2010,
More than 25% of Singaporeans are OVERWEIGHT
10.8% are OBESE
Out of the 17,000 deaths per year,
5,500 (30%) are due to HEART DISEASE
5,100 are due to CANCER
17% of adults suffer from HIGH CHOLESTEROL
11.3% of adults are diagnosed with DIABETES
All of these problems are linked to our own poor eating habits! Our body cells regenerate themselves every 3 to 4 months. Just visualise your body cells after 3 to 4 months of char kway tiao, chicken rice, KFC, Big Macs. Isn't it only logical that your body cells will be made up of fat cells?
Then you will say, "Aiyoh, like that everything don't need to eat already. What's the point in living???"
Don't worry! You DEFINITELY can still continue to enjoy your favourite food. What our body needs more is a nutritious meal. Giving your body 1-2 nutritious meals daily that will restore it to health and help you to lose weight isn't too much to ask right? Plus you can still eat your favourite meal once a day!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, said, "Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."
