Dogs: Beagles

hiya, I've also got a 4-mth old beagle pup.. will be fetching her home today. one of my key concerns is to housebreak the pup.. will be using newspapers for her potty training. how's your experience with your pup's potty training?

hi joanne,

i dun have a beagle but my neighbour does.. beagles eat alot and can be very very stubborn. they like attention too..

YES! Potty remains a problem! A big problem...my beagle can auto go to the newspaper to pee, but not poo. Have to spend lotsa patience. Yup, newspapers, rem to let it pee on the newspaper, do not throw away the newspaper, let it get accustomed to its scent and it shld be ok. Spent 1 week+ on the paper training. Ya, beagles are stubborn & rebellious dogs..really need to have a firm hand.

Hi,

i agree with you. I used to have a beagle at home. She is such a darling and yet stubborn.

So you gotta be firm in your boundaries and your toilet training. Beagles like to tear newspapers, scratch the doors. So when you scold it, make sure your tone is really angry and firm, and 4 motnhs old tend to foget easily when playing. So haev to contant remind your beagle with the same toilet command, and contantly putting it on the newpaper to smell its scent.

Hi MiCar, used to have? Now dun have? What happened?
Care to share?

Yes! My beagle - BoyBoy is horrible! He likes to chew on my toes and hands, which is quite irritating . To stop all these nonsense, I slap him, but the more I slap him, the more he wanna chew me. Super pek chek! The other day bought a cane, but also cannot bear to hit it..so also no use.

Yes, beagles seem notorious for being stubborn. Mine is very stubborn too. I scolded her for chewing newspapers and she just went back to chewing the papers with even more force. As for toilet training, I had to place the newspapers at a particular area (bottom left hand corner of her play pen) so that she'll pee and poo there 70% of the time. But after she finished her business she'll step all over the poo and pee and dirty the whole play pen if I didn't scoop her up immediately. Spent 3/4 of my time cleaning up after her.

Btw, any tips for getting the beagle to calm down during feeding time? The moment my pup smells her food, she goes all berserk and wouldn't stop running up and down her playpen. We can't hold her down at all cos she struggles too much.

Hi Joanne Tan,

i lost my dog 6 years ago due to some bacteria that attacked her Kidney. Her body was yellowish due to the infection to her organs that cause her to bleed non-stop from the anus. She was placed on Antibiotic drip for 2 days but could not survive. She barely reached 3 years old.

She is smaller than the normal female beagle. Her feet are small. And yet she has big gorgeous blue eyes. We spend days sleeping together when i was studying in Uni at that time. She has always been my alarm clock. My mum will open my room door, and i can hear her charging from the kitchem and all the way up onto my bed to lick me. When she does not succeed in waking me up, she'll join me to sleep.

Sometimes i was too tired to even notice that she was sleeping beside me until i turn my body and squash her. She will always carry along with her her favourite pillow unto my bed. But she does not sleep onto it, she sleeps onto mine.

heheheheee..

When I was sad, she was there to "kiss" me. although she is naughty at times like tearing newspaper or throwing little tantrums, I still ever love her. She will always carry her rubber toys and push it against my leg wanting me to play "catch". She will sit beside me when i watch TV.

My dad and mum miss her the most. they are always home with her and taught her new tricks. She likes to disturb my dad cos my dad dun like to touch her. And yet her patience paid off, my dad every night will let her choose her choice of biscuits and will always attempt to lick my dad running off scott free.

for my parents, losing her is like losing a daughter. Until now they do not want to have another dog. its too heart breaking. She has once brought great joy to the family.

I always will try to stop to look at the beagles in the parks and sometimes roadside. It allows me to bring alot of fond memories.

To all Beagles owner, care to share with me ur dog's picture to me? looking at the pictures will allow me to ravish on my memory.

Hi wys, if I am not wrong, your beagle is too hungry. Puppies must be fed 4 times everyday..(ma ciam babies. For adult dogs, 2 times per day. I am rather concerned about feeding my BoyBoy - if too much, he will become fat; too little - malnutrition. In worst scenarios, if they get too hungry, they will eat their own poo.

Hi MiCar, really sound very sad. I can understand how you feel. Your Beagle is really very obedient. Hope you will get over the loss..ultimately. Just to ravish your memory and hopefully to cheer you up, I have uploaded a picture of my BoyBoy. Smile!

Hi Joanne,

Thank you so much for making me smile. Though it has been many years, but our friendship has always been strong. I miss her dearly and yet i know she is happy in Heaven. Everytime i think from this angle, i feel happy and relieve.

Thank you for showing me your BoyBoy! He is such a darling! Feel like hugging him now

Baby Beagles are really cute. When my gal grew up, i still think she looks like the first time i met her. A cute cuddly baby....

Awwww....BoyBoy is cute. He wil brighten your days to come.

For baby beagles, it is natural to get hungry easily. Adult beagles are recommended 1 meal a day. Maybe you can try to split the one big meal into 2 small meals. never feed human food though. So usually my dad will be the one in charge of giving her one or 2 snack a day. My dog loves Durian, but we only give her a very very small piece.

Tks for all the advice. I'll try to split the meal into smaller meals so we can feed her more often.

hi Micar, so sorry to hear about your loss... it's really very sad, to lose your gal so suddenly. here's a picture of my pup. hope it'll cheer you up.

Hi wys, wow, your pup is really v adorable! Tho they are of the same breed, if you notice, their look, esp their faces are different. Don't know how to describe, but just different.

Right now, I am teaching BoyBoy to sit and it has been a success so far. Poo-poo & chewing my toes and fingers is still an issue tho : ( That time I was looking around the forum, I saw good reviews of the dog trainer - Alfred Sim. Spoke to him and he charges 600 bucks for unlimited training, one week once. Will be meeting him tomorrow for a "sample" training. Very expensive, to be frank. Will see how it goes, but most likely will not fork out the 600 bucks. Rather train him myself.

MiCar, come on! Cheer up! You seem to really love Beagles, why not get one again? I think you will be happier...(Just my 2 cents opinion) : )

Hi Girls,

Your furkid is so cute....

I dun have a Beagle, but have a English Cocker Spaniel though.

For better advise and discussions and caring tips for puppies, I would recommend you to the Sigapore Dog Forum.

There is also a specific breed column where u can join to talk to owners of specific dog breed and share your problems and grap tips from.

Hope to see you there...

Hi Joanne, your BoyBoy is very cute too! All the beagle pups I saw looked different, e.g. the colour patches on their faces are different, some with more rounded faces than others, etc.. But all are equally adorable.

I've also been teaching my pup (BeaGirl) to sit and to come to me. She seems to get it right most of the time. But cannot do it for too many times at one go, cos she loses interest very quickly. Have also tried to walk her on a leash. She's quite ok with the leash after a few practises, except sometimes she would try to chew the leash. During certain times of the day, she's into a chewing mood and it's almost impossible to stop her from chewing up the newspapers and other things that are not meant to be chewed. We gave her chew toys but she only likes the bone and not the rubber ones

$600 for one lesson is very expensive! What do you mean by unlimited? Does it mean that the duration of the lesson is not restricted?

Hi wys, yesterday I met up with Alfred Sim, looks experienced. No, not 600 bucks for 1 lesson. He said 600 bucks unlimited, but minimum 8 lessons. For this 600 bucks, he will train you to teach the dog toilet train, sit, heel, walk on a leash, turn left, turn right, aggression issues etc in the comfort of your home. If the dog develops weird behavior after the basic training, you can call him and then he will come and solve the issue, FOC.

After discussing the items he will train me to teach the dog, he showed me the performance of his 2 show dogs. Very impressive, he asked the dogs to reverse, they walked backwards and so on..

Actually in a dilemma whether to sign up or not. 600 bucks is quite alot, to be frank.

Hello wys.
Thank you for sharing your puppy, Beagirl! SHe is such a darling too!! SHe really reminds me of my gal. Thank you for making me smile!! ANd i am truly confident that you will take care of her very well!!

Hi all, *sigh* my puppy is getting more & more rebellious. Yesterday I just chased him around with a cane, tot that he won't repeat his mistake of biting my heel. Who knows the next moment, he began to bite my heel again. Abit pek chek. Have decided on the dog trainer thingy - expensive, but no choice, judging by the situation...

hi joanne,

my corgi also does that whenever he sees me getting ready to go out for work. Guess he doesn't want to be alone at home. Is there anyone in the house with yr boy when you're not at home?

ya! i think he does that to stop me from going out / to force me to bring him out. Ya, I have my Gramps at home to take care of him. Wow, Corgi, any picture? Heard that the UK Royal family loves corgis..even Queen Elizabeth has one..How old is your corgi?

wys,

ur beagle is really cute...care to share more pics of him now?

I used to own one, but due to lack of time, he was always in the kitchen and backyard, and he is very active, when u put him outside, he will start scratching the door and scratched until my door all spoilt.

They need a lot of time and attention and r very hyper, so toys like balls and dolls will be great company if u can play with them.

hi, do anyone know how to stop my dog from eating her own poop? she has this problem of eating it up which is quite a problem as she will also bring it to the living room. This is my doggie's pic, shes 1yr 8mths..

does this happend just recently or all the while is like that?

you can go to dogs forum and ask those dog's expert there. I am not expert.

but from what i read, I think this is more like behaviour problem. so if you caught her in the act, must scold her immediately.

Beagles are known to eat poo. It could also be a medical condition. Forgot what's the name of the condition. Sometimes it could be due to the fact that they did not absorb all the nutrients in their food so when they pass out the poo, they think it's still food and they'll eat it. They will stop when they can't smell/detect the "food" in their poo.

My beagle also has this nasty habit. She'll like eat her poo 50% of the time. We try to clear her poo as quickly as we could to prevent her from eating it. But it's not easy cos she likes to poo when no one's around or in the middle of the night. (Headache!!)

We're changing her dry food to see if it'll help.
You may also want to ask the vet for advice.

correction, dogs eating poo does not happen in certain breeds. I can name a few that does it also, Shih Tzu Maltese JRT........
Sometimes its becos of behaviour problems, like seeking attention. Other times its because the food is not properly digested thats why when its passed out, it still smells like food to them.
A way u can curb the habit is to quickly clear the poo away before they eat it every single time. And as time goes by, they will stop eating their own poo. Thats what i did
Another way is to feed them Solid Gold SEP (Stop eating Poo).

Hello wys,

It has been a long time since i came into this website.

How has Beagirl been? I am sure she is all grown up.

I have had my beagle for almost 15 years. She is not doing well. About two years ago she was hit by a car and the car damaged her hind leg. And she was diagnosed with heart worms. Our vet told us the treatment was to risky. About three weeks ago she started vomiting after eating and now she is seeming to have trouble brething. She breathes really deep and then gasps for air. I am not sure if she is going to be okay or if she needs to go to the vet. I called them yesterday again and they said to limit her food and water to only once or twice a day. And limiting water seems crule to me. So I am wondering if this is to do with her heartworms or old age. Anyone who may have some ideas please respond. Thanks so much!

Does anyone know of any Beagle oriented festivals that happen on the East Coast? Preferrably in the Mid Atlantic region? If not does anyone know of any sort of predominantly Beagle or Hound oriented get togethers, parks etc? Everytime I take my dog Macey out she encounters labs and dobbers, and pit bulls, and boxers but rarely any Beagles and I thought it would be nice to hang with some fellow hounds.

Hello everyone, can i ask if anyone is keeping their beagle in a condo? I'm interested in getting one but also concerned that the barking/ howling will disturb the neighbours... Any advice out there appreciated, thanks!
