Difficulty in adjusting to singapore life- any advice??

we can have a civil discussion on where we'd like to live or what's a better environment for us and our families. most people would have no problem with that. the earlier examples brought out were, to a large extent, distinct to each country. like weather, health care, public transportation, and yes, even lifestyle. your examples, on the other hand, are just plain idiotic. there is nothing inherent about UK that brings about those weird happenstance you mentioned. if they are even real to begin with.

yes,,, its a cultural shock but not really simply because of the country, location, weather but that she was brought up in a very sheltered environment. You can have the same in any part of the world. Someone brought up in sgp can be so sheltered in the same way too.

i hv to agree though..

Well, i agree that in may parts of the world, and countries like UK or France, they do have their rough side as well; old sickly people, poor etc..

I am aware, but i am yet to see , simply bcoz i did not visit the rough side of the countries

Singapore is a very rich country by its own, given the fact that how little resources SG has, and stil doing so well.

but because SG is relatively small, in just a shortwhile, i guess i seen too much for me to digest through... thus , i am 'surprised' ... that's all i wanna say

The 1st place i went, when i landed on SG, was Gaylang. My sis said the Bak Kut Teh was good(even without knowing which stall nor been here b4), so straight fr Changi airport we made our way there, without knowing what is gaylang notoriously famous for. Sorry, no offend here, but i only learnt it from my local friends here once i joined the workforce.

Just like how Amsterdam has their Red Light District and Soho in London, or chow kit in KL, Sg has Gaylang. I have really no comment on this, but this is the 1st place i landed my feet on in SG...and nobody can imagine, the level of shock i experienced..

But what has Geylang got to do with difficulty to adjusting to life in SG?

If you don't like the env at Geylang, then don't go there.

Not as if Geylang is all over SG.

For me, I quite like the chaotic nature of geylang - one of the very few places in SG where there is much dynamism.

Canary, there is a Geylang in every country. I am kind of shocked to learn that you had some culture shock stepping foot in Geylang.

Canary,

I am not sure how the red light districts in the western countries are like. If you are shocked by what you see in Geylang, you probably can't imagine what you would see if you set foot on the red light districts in other South East Asia countries.

If you don't like what you see in Geylang, then go to other parts of Singapore. Geylang is not a fair representation of what Singapore truly is.

Is common lah... Once a place is robust, everything will gather there. Nothing shocking. I think Geyland should be or has already been market as one of the tourist attraction. Much food, durian and etc. So apart from just looking at the negative side of stuffs, theres the greater side too.

Geylang is a must visit for me and my friends once every month for the dim sum and the durians for supper after movies.. I agree that it's pretty much of a tourist attraction now as my oversea friends came for a visit, they would request a tour to the place.

In fact Geylang is comparatively mild compared to other parts of the world. I spent four years in Australia, and my girl friends and I never really dare to go to the red light district if we are not accompanyed by some guy friends. Maybe I'm just timid.

Canary, you been to Amsterdam red light district? The prostitues rent "window space" by the streets and display themselves in sexy lingerie. Compared to Amsterdam's red light district, what is Geylang? Damn discreet.

We vacatiioned mainly in some nice european countries which i frankly speaking, i did not really see the poor..or maybe i just chose to 'close' my eyes

she just has something against singapore la .. that's all ..
