After hearing the message from the govt that they hope singles will consider marriage and parenthood, do you think this will push singles to step out and change their mindset?

no lah. it's the personality of the person

if by nature very shy, how to bring himself or herself to proactively take part in activities to mingle & make new friends?

most likely will continue to wait passively for fate to deliver potential spouse to his or her door step

I agree with pinkhippo, if the mindset of the singles is already considering marriage and parenthood, then the government is paving the way for them.

If some are swinging singles, then no matter what incentives there are and might be, they will take their time as and when they are ready rather than let some government policies take precedent.

There are many reasaons why people never/don't get married. If life can be that simple by placing a man n woman together and get married, it would be wonderful. If people rush to marry, is it mean that in future there will be people rush to divorce? Then how about their children? They come to this earth just because their parents wanted the incentives? How many children will be in a broken family and suffer?

Yes I also agree with pinkhippo as well.

A single lady friend told me the same thing. She & a few of her single friends are not even proactively socialising at all, also have the "Wait-for-prince-charming-to-drop-from-heaven" mentality. She also said she's just too lazy.

I would say that she's not confident of herself & she's hiding behind this excuse.

No amount of effort by government or friends around will help if the person himself / herself won't take the first step. By waiting for 'prince-charming to drop from sky' wont happen if you are not actively putting your self out to make more friends.

Those price charming drop down from sky only happens in drama series. Its like an inertia that takes alot of effort to break through.

right right! my single friends still waiting for their prince charming to appear & sweep them off their feet.

I told them must make an effort to GO OUT and mingle. Can't sit at home & wait. May or may not find that special someone but at least you try, by expanding your social circle. Continue to sit at home & wait passively, chances as good as nil

If you want to strike toto, also have to make an effort to queue up to buy lottery ticket. May or may not win any prize but at least you join in the pool of lottery mah. Don't queue up then zero chance. Analogy make sense?

not encouraging you to buy toto though

Getting married has nothing to do with hdb flats i think. Its the affinity where they meet the other partner. Some people who has been trying very hard to look for the other half, going for speed dating and meeting anyone under the sun.

Everyone want to enjoy marriage life with their loved ones but not everyone is lucky enough to meet someone they love and willing to commit.

Marriage isn't just about love and connection to me. There are a lot of other factors to consider such as maturity, compatibility, financial stability, etc, etc. A lot of married couples want their own place but because housing is so unaffordable now, people put off getting married to save.

As for me, i'm still waiting patiently for my princess to come knocking at my door, asking if i would like to go to the movies with her....lol

Jokes aside, i believe that sometimes fate plays a part in determining if one does marry or not. When cupid's arrow strkes, you just can't dodge it. But then again, in order that cupid's arrow may strike, one has to socialize more. On the other hand, there are some who have a very wide circle of friends but have yet to find their Ms/Mr right.

A stressful work environment might be a reason why some are still single. Imagine the amount of hours some of us have to put into our job. By the time the weekends come, just too drained to socialize.

Insecurity may be another reason. If one feels that he/she barely earns enough to feed himself/herself, marriage is likely to be off the cards.

A person's personality may also be a determinant factor. I would speculate that many singles belong to the shy type who just find it difficult to break the ice & socialize.

care to share your experience with dating agencies, magikme? Thats me lor, muzik, i am one who has been fighting in the stressful work environment and today i am still single. Its late night every week and its too tired to socialise over weekends. Just need an instant solution to meet someone potential and settle down...

Otelle, there is no instant fix solution .. you are still required to put in an equal amount of effort to make the relationship work ..

Pink hippo agree that one must make effort to look, but again depends on where you trying to look.. like i have this dear friend, she's quite beautiful act, but until now (35), still single, not that she never meet guys or having a bf; the reason is she's looking for those guys in a wrong place! most of it in a club, or casino, bar, etc.. no offence for ppl who like to go to club and all, but how big is the chance that the guy you've meet would be a perfect husband for you?
for my own preference, i wont look there, coz eventhough the bf/gf rs works and end up in marriage; i dont want my husband keep partying all the time or every weekend while i'm at home breastfeeding and changin diapers alone!

I told my friend many times but she insist its not true, she told us that guys down there looks more macho and fun, she's attracted to them more than meet in working network. So well, there she is, single with almost no saving, she tought gift or travel together would keep the relationship...the last 'bf' was 3 months ago, meet in disco (again), dating less than 1 month, travel to bali already, in the second months she find out that guy triple date her.. sigh..
