Boss's bad working culture. How to change?

If your boss behaves like this, is it acceptable?

All the staffs under her cannot eat lunch, unless she says, "ok, lets go for lunch now". then only everyone can get up from their seats and eat. And we must eat with her! if she didnt say can eat lunch, no one dares to eat lunch. sometimes she works til 2-3pm, we are so hungry also dare not voice out.

We are not allowed to talk among colleagues from other department, no allowed to eat with colleagues from other department, and cannot be away from our seat for too long. otheriwse, she will do 'spot-check' on our whereabout

we cannot wear low cut pants, as in those formal pants selling in G2000. and also cannot wear formal sleeveless dress. really those very formal type selling in G2000. only bare the arms, nuthing more. she does not allow.

we must join in at least 5 of the organization organised events yearly to 'uphold' the department image, as in to show that we are really a high-spirited team. those events normally will take place after work at 6pm, n ends around 9-10pm. i seldom join as i hv my family waiting for me at home. my colleagues warn me that it will affect my appraisal.

nobody dares to leave at 6pm, eventhough they hv completed most of their work. they will delay a bit n leave at 7.30pm. coz my boss leaves very late at nite.

can anyone tell me how to change my boss's work culture? i find it very disturbing and unhealthy.

There was a millionaire who was suffering with severe eye pain. He consulted many physicians, consumed various medicines, but the pain remained.

At last a monk, who was expert in treating such patients, was called for by the millionaire. The monk understood the problem and instructed that for sometime the millionaire should concentrate only on green colour; and avoid seeing any other colour.

The millionaire immediately employed a group of painters, purchased barrels of green paint and directed that every object his eye was likely to fall upon be painted green just as the monk had directed.

When the monk came to visit him after a few days, the millionaire’s servants ran with buckets of green paint and emptied it on the sage.

Seeing this, the monk smiled and said, ‘If only you had purchased a pair of green spectacles, worth just a few dollars, you could have saved these walls, furniture, jewels and other articles; and also saved a large fortune. It is childish to think that you can paint the whole world green.’

Let us change our vision. It is foolish to shape the world, let us shape ourselves first.

it's hard to walk into a jail, stay in it on your own free will, and ask why u're treated like a criminal...

so when u decide that enough is enough n u deserve better, then it's time to walk out since u're not held against your will...

i guess a paycut of 20% would be welcomed if a change of environment is possible.

There's nothing you can do about it coz ur boss will still prefer HER way of doing things. Even if you speak to her about it, chances are you'll be blacklisted despite your good intentions. Either stay and learn to adapt OR leave.

And don't expect your colleagues to back you up if you DO intend to speak to your boss. Coz they won't for the sake of their rice bowl.

i guess the only solution now is to leave. but i will persist to change the culture 1st b4 i leave, at least i hv tried n leave without regrets. thanks for all the feedbacks

why would u wanna do that? there's nothing chivalrous in doing that and u might end with a bad rep...

u're trying to change an entire dept n culture n boss... it's not like u're gonna be financially rewarded nor promoted nor anything... in view of your career, do u think it's worth your efforts?

"there's nothing chivalrous in doing that and u might end with a bad rep..."

Dawson, your future employer may contact this boss of yours before they hire you. Starting a revolution in your office will likely earn you a bad name.

I agree. Leave on a good note, it's better for your future prospects as well. Why bother changing something that's firmly entrenched in the work culture to begin with?

I think u shld reconsider what u've just said, no point for u to do that. For all u know, it may all come back to haunt u when u go for job interview next time and ur prospective employer does a cross-reference check or even asks for a testimonial from them.

'don't trouble trouble till trouble troubles you'

dawnson,

another thing i would like to add is... sometimes where u're at, as an employee... u may not fully comprehend the nature of the biz or dept etc... u may not understand the politics above that might require certain things in place below...

i have seen many pple complain at ground level, but sometimes - the upper level is actually implementing certain things to protect them. some bosses May be forced to cut their headcount, but in order to save the jobs of All - may be forced to make certain changes, implement certain policies... not many bosses will explain this, nor do they see a need to. Then despite all their efforts - the ground staff will complain n accuse the boss of this n that...

until u're certain u have a fantastic view of the situations across the board, u might like to give some benefit of a doubt too.

fyi, i have a 'boss' who is an absolute pain n everyone is afraid of him... but actually becos my whole dept all Nice Pple... if this particular boss did not play the bad guy, our dept would have been bullied n kena makan-ed liao...

ps: not protecting anyone, just hope to expand your scope abit.

Dawson, I had an ex-boss quite similar to yours more than 10 years ago. She was the reason that I left the job after being in it for only three months. I left the company quietly without a bad word about her during the exit interview.

Some years later she joined a firm that has dealings with my current company. There was absolutely no embarrassment on my part dealing with her or having a business luncheon with her.

Hi dawnson,

Unless you intend to be self-employed, I think it's better that you leave the company with a smile and thank your Boss for sharing her expertise and experience with you.

Bosses are human too. They also talked among themselves in social gathering with other Bosses.
This may affect your future interview if you create a revolution in the office.

Hi Dawnson,

Even if you become a Boss yourself, sometimes you will also need help from other company Bosses to smoothen a deal.

So it makes sense to have a good working relationship with them.

"can anyone tell me how to change my boss's work culture? i find it very disturbing and unhealthy."

Quit... if everyone leaves, she will get the pressure from HR. This is a totally crazy culture.

Why would leaving be making enemies. Unless she intend to leave in a bad way. If the attrition rate of her team is significantly higher, for sure, HR will note and realize something about it.

Not in reference to your post, Milo. My entry being after yours does not necessarily make it a direct response or inference to your post.

wow, thanks for the feedbacks. didnt think much of the consequences in depth. dont mean to be in bad terms with my boss if i leave, just thinking to give her a feedback of my view on her work culture. but now i think it might not be a good idea really...

anyway, i still hv to bear with her til i get a new job...
