Nowadays, truth and openness is rate. There are many "dating scammers" or people who give out fake info on their online dating profile - education, job, marital status, past relationships etc. I came across a few of such people and it is tiring to want to believe, but never know when they are telling the truth or not.

Does anyone conduct background searches of their potential date whom they wish to enter a serious relationship? Like gather information like credit bureau search, ROM search or Google search to find out more about a person before making a big decision to step into a relationship?

Would it give you more comfort to look at facts before deciding? E.g. he lied that he is divorced, but he is still legally married.

Just curious when do you propose to do such a check? Before first date? Before "going steady"? Before proposal/getting proposed to?

Some of what you propose doing is free like Google searches or Rom search (twice a year?) Others are not.

Maybe before getting serious, especially if you see any red flags behaviour. Sometimes you get a gut feel that the other person isn't telling the truth, even if you asked.
The free checks would be for Singapore. But you can consider other overseas searches if your partner is of other nationality.
E.g he/she could be working in Singapore, but is actually married back home. You can't tell that the person isn't single.

Truth and openness is rare with the serial habitual liars. If a person has so much to hide and uncomfortable to share, there has to be a reason. Either he doesn't believe you cannot handle the truth or he has is own agenda.
