Animal abuse.

Just read on Yahoo news the brutal death of a poor dog.

Once again, reflects how idiotic our educated fellow Singaporeans have became. Call police. What a joke. Several witnesses but none dare to step up to stop that man. So what if he is insane? He is out numbered. Bunch of idiot gu niangs that think calling the police is the answer to all the issues. They swallowed their balls or something.

It is indeed a very cruel act and i hope that the person involved not only gets caught and fined but also gets to discover the act of being beaten to death as well!!

he is probably mentally unsound. I'm more disgusted by the mentally sound cowards that witness the execution.

Ya.. I don understand why nobody dare to step out to help that innocent dog. The pomy must had felt so helpless. I really curse that man to death. Make sure he get it triple back.

sometime is better to get the police to handle it. We wouldn't know what is the background of that man. Maybe he is a runaway from woodbridge? isn't it going going to create more problem?

I was so freaked out by the picture that I had to cover it while I read the article. The Pom reminds me of my late Pom.

Either the abuser is out of his mind or he is unable to control his emotions. No matter what, there will be karma. You don't take a life and expect to live in peace for the rest of your life.

As a woman I don't think I can physically separate him from the dog. I will throw the rubbish bin at him to distract him. Will this work?

doll, kicking the balls do work. well, the man's a coward for abusing and murdering a helpless dog. i hope the witnesses were more of shocked to stop him - than getting entertained.
anyway i did read the news article on yahoo, but i didn't see any part whereby he was caught.

wouldn't want to curse him or anything, but seriously, he deserves stiff punishments like the cane and some jail time.

Yah call police. When something like that happen to your pet, would u think the same. Singapreans are always kiasi for the just in case when the call to help. If it's for some cheapo free stuffs, suddenly not kiasi anymore. Just kiasu.

haha..agree with Milo.

If it's me, i would stop him, at least shout to him that i am calling the police, if he chase me, i will just run away, at least the dog is safe when he is chasing me. So sad the dog died when it can actually survive..

Doll, honestly, we live amongst selfish kiasi idiots that love to keep just in case stupid buffers. In reality, they aren't really that careful and conservative. Just situational... they are conservative SELECTIVELY.

Uniquely Singapore, we call MPs and police to talk to our neighbors. And I dare call them IDIOTS.

I heard that the dog actually belongs to the murderer! He should be tried for murder because this is not just animal abuse. Those bystanders should be prosecuted too for doing nothing to stop the crime
sad.gif

Sometimes it makes me wonder why the government is licensing dogs when it should be more effective to license dogowners after screening. There are more people who do bad things to dogs than the other way round

If the witnesses unite, I'm sure they can stop him. It might not be their dog, but it's still a living thing so surely it invokes strong feelings?

to be fair, u cannot blame the witness from not stepping up...only someone deranged will do something like this ~ and if you see some one brutally doing this, first reaction, you will be shocked.

the better act is to call the police - ok maybe you can shout at the guy but what if he turn around ? its easy for us to poke holes here while not witnessing the incident.

its akin to not jumping into a river to save a drowning man. There is fear and its something that holds us back sometimes...

Firstly it takes some courage and with an impromptu crowd, what makes you think the others will back u up to have safety in numbers?

it isn't poking holes. Its really what I feel is lacking amongst us. I dare say I would stand up.

unfortunately, this is the trend in society nowadays, people are getting less empathetic to surroundings...

we are not selfish, just unsure if we should help. sometimes...not like in other countries people will step up....well, thats how everyday heros come about.

They will only be daring when behind the wheel to out maneuver the driver that cut their lane and risking the lives of other road users and their paseengers as well.

When the call to help, they swallow their balls. In the nutshell, self interest and ego are above their own safety while helping others is placed at the least priority. That's why I say its conservative selectively. If that's not selfish what is? 'Not sure to help' is a nice way of covering it. If we are honest with ourselves we know it. Would we come up with all these reasons when protecting our own rights and interest?

giantemu,

well yes, i would be shocked too but it is different from witnesssing fights between two guys, for instance. in this case, it was a total brutual one-way assault against a helpless dog.

waiting for the police's arrival is akin to imposing a death sentence on the little one. it's the common mentality of "if it's not my problem, i better stay out of it" and wrongly applied by these witnesses.

in real instances - i have had resolved quarrels between stranger drivers, told ppl off for cutting queues at the cashiers and those blardy white elephants for not pressing the lift buttons when i'm abt to enter with lotsa stuffs. many years back before i got my car, i gave up seats to needy ppl countless of times even though i would expect some curious looks like i was some alien from another planet. well i'm just saying it's common sense to assist or intervene when we have to.

so likewise, i would run up to stop that abuser within 2 secs.

I will try to stop the man by throwing something at him, a brolly, a bin or any hard object that I could lift off and throw at him. This is something anyone can do I believe.

One must realize taking no action is also an action with its consequences. When we choose not to react, the world continues to spin as they continue to witness a life taken away right in front of their eyes. In reality, they knew they could do something about it and there is no chance to wait for the police to save that poor dog.

So, we have to stop feeding our minds with bullshit excuses over our choices we made in life.

I am really disgusted with this whole matter.

I hope that the murderer gets his due punishment. Not a fine or 2 weeks jail, but something that really hurts! I fear he will get away scot-free on grounds of insanity.

Being a dog lover, I really can't fathom how anyone can stand by and watch the helpless dog being tortured and killed. I too, will stop the mad man without hesitation.

how come nobody mentioned that an animal abuser is possibly the precurser of a homicidal murderer or even a serial killer?

all animal abusers should be caught and rehabilitated. given more trigger or recklessness, the abuser could one day turn loose on a human being. we cannot condone this.

it only takes one call to the police to protect a whole community. think about it.

But seriously all these talks amount to anything? And yes, we SHOULD have stopped it and yet time after time it is the same old story.

SM,

it is all moralising. that's good. rubbing off morally upright sentiments on one another for reinforcement effect. that's a good thing cause they dont teach HAO3 GONG1 MIN2 in schools these days.

"how come nobody mentioned that an animal abuser is possibly the precurser of a homicidal murderer or even a serial killer?"

I think this is a little far-fetched. Is it back-up by anything other than your thoughts?

Animals are animals. They are not the same as humans. Yes, what the guy did was truly horrible and he should be stopped and punished by the due process of the law.

But to link him to being a serial killer is a little too far-fetched.

The law against animal-abuse needs to be made more up to date and possibly SPCA could well do some education and marketing to further its cause.

may,

this type of argument... like graduation and linkage theories are based on stats.. not causal.

I am not saying they are incorrect.. but given the stats.. you can also draw other conclusion.

And yes, there could be some "disturbed" people who has "graduated" from animal abuse to abusing humans.. but it is not conclusive as a general causal relationship.

I am not saying we should not take note of animal abusers. But it is another thing to link it to homicide. If the courts and police accept such theory, then animal abusers would have the same punishment as if it was committed against a human.

Then where to stop? Pet dogs cannot abuse. Stray dogs? How about cats? How about birds? How about other pets? No one would bad an eye-lid if we tortune a lizard I suppose?

psychologically, it might be the same as abusing helpless people, such as children and eldery. based on a certain 'possibility', i can see where May is coming from. but of course, it is a raw assumption.

the tragedy has been creating some waves over the media recently, in particular to an online petition. might lead to greater awareness over animal abuse? hopefully.

may,

"it is all moralising. that's good. rubbing off morally upright sentiments on one another for reinforcement effect"

Seriously, I don't agree with this. There is a much greater danger of being "complacent" just because we think we feel good about our moral upright sentiments.

You see people having accidents on the road. You know, most people - it is not that they are not morally upright or unhelpful - but they simply froze - expecting others to help. It is a modern ill. I rather have specific definable actions for us to follow than to just rub off morally upright sentiments.

That day as I was driving.. an old man fell right in front of my car.. I stopped.. cars behind me horning.. people (walking) in front of me and around.. all froze.. no action.

I had to get out of my car to help the old man to cross the road.

Sm,

that's why i used the word "possibly" and "precursor" not "is murderer".

i should have used the word "plausibly" which conveys a lesser intensity.

well hopefully.... just hopefully

the reinforcement effect (forums, media, whatnots) is not just to feel good, but to back up with actions when the time arises.

may,

On a practical aspect.. it is unlikely to happen. I am not saying it is nogt important.. But already in this world, we have far more important pressing issues.

You know at least a million children die of malaria in Africa annually? If I have the ability or the funds.. I would attack 10% of the problem that would save most lives..

Animal abuse is unfortunately not on top of the list.. anyway, in a way, humans are abusing animals on a daily basis - slaughtering them, cooking them, eating them.. so in a way, we are already numb...

Don't get me wrong. I am not dismissing animal abuse altogether. We could possibly have more education, campaigns, stricter with the law enforcement.. etc etc.. but linking it to homicide won't cut much ice and won't do much

A fried of mine sms me couple of days ago and asked if i seen d news and my reply is "yes, with tears rolling in my eyes as i was reading d news at hm"

I dun understand y our fellow singaporean can b so heartless as 2 b a bystander instead of lending a helping hand 2 d poor dog who cant put up a fight/speak

imagine if u were d dog???

i feel tat alot of education or more stricter punishment shld b done/enforced so tat we can minimise such tragedy frm happening

no punishment will teach singaporeans to have a heart and balls to stand up.

Just one point, its kind of ironic that we are more affected by the death of a dog than another human? I mean, do you cry when u hear news of another untimely death or accident?

Somehow, the reaction is more dependent on whether the news are sensationalized or not.

i think more or less the same kind of emotions when the demise is due to some kind of unfortunate accident or unjustified brutality...

We humans are also prejudiced and bias.

Yes, say someone tortured a dog or cat.. it is inhuman.

How about someone torturing a lizard? It is ugly looking.. Mostly no one will care much except for those conservationists.

"You know at least a million children die of malaria in Africa annually? If I have the ability or the funds.. I would attack 10% of the problem that would save most lives."

We should reach out to people (or animals) in distress that are near us. The situation in Africa is not just a social problem, it is also political. You can donate money or medicine but perhaps only 5% will go to them.

Help can take a form of small amount. Help should happen at home first. This is how our children learn from us. We don't want to be like an African country that is forever waiting for other countries to lend a hand.

doll,

"We could reach out to people (or animals) in distress that are near us. The situation in Africa is not just a social problem, it is also political. You can donate money or medicine but perhaps only 5% will go to them."

I don't think so. It is just a general apathy that people far away do not affect us that much. And also not true that 5% go to them.

Help should go to does that need it most.. unless closer to home it is a critical situation.

Bill/Melinda Gate's funds and already with their clout he was able to get Warren Buffet to pledge his wealth has well to his funds. And recently he reached out to some of the richest people in the world - at least half of them pledged to give away 50% of their wealth to charity.

It is of course important to have a organization oversea the funds distribution. And today like for the fight against malaria - money being poured into research for way to contain the disease. Of course there are also millions in africa suffering from AIDS.

We are not only talking about raising funds but also about the distribution of these funds and how it will reach those people in need.

SM, I wasn't saying that we don't help people far away. What I believe is that we don't excuse ourselves for not helping with minor problems at home just because there are more pressing issues elsewhere.

There is always a more important and pressing issue. It's never ending. Just put your resources on causes that are closed to your heart whether it is animal welfare, child trafficking, Malaria hit children in Africa, etc.

Just look at Tsunami, how little actually went to help the victims in Indonesia.

When you eat them, at least its within the food chain... Not wasted lives.

But well, I have killed enough roaches.
