All blur newly weds gather here!

just got married 2 weeks ago and even though we've been staying together for the past 9-10 months, we're still in the process of learning about each other.

thought it might be useful for newly weds and 'older birds' to share some experience and advice perhaps?

i start with a really "auntie" tip:

to wash really oily pots, squirt some liquid detergent and soak with hot water. for final touch, can scrub with that metal scrub thingie

Hi Pink Bunny

Not offering any advice at the moment but just wanted to say 'congratulations' ... for making it through to 2 weeks!'
biggrin.gif

We've been married for over 6 months and still learning about each other. Don't think that process will ever stop.

Btw, I also use your 'auntie' tip, except for the metal thingy as we don't have any. So normally, I tend to leave them soaking overnight in soap water and hope my hubby will be kind enough to wash it when he wakes up. Usually its too much to hope for, but occasionally I'll get a treat. Ha! Ha!

pinkbunny - hehehee
happy.gif
dont know u newly weds too leh! currently me and my hubbie are weekend stay-in couple and waiting to go thru customary in dec. Had been together for about 10 yrs liao..so i believe by time we really live in together...we may not have too many things to know about each other :p

haha mrs n, i also keep fingers crossed that he'd wash in the morning! like you, i find it too much to ask for hehe

hi jingles! actually when i went for the marriage prep course, we met a couple that have known each other for 16 years but they also found that they had stuff to learn about each other. i guess it never ends.

another auntie tip! magiclean is super happening. if you have it, just use it 3 times a week or so (or when your house is getting dusty) then can cut down on mopping occasions. it's a life saver :D

Pink Bunny, you are spot on with magiclean!

Another tip to share : Put garlic in your rice bin. It will keep those weevils at bay.

tip : put a half-cut fresh lemon in ur fridge to get rid of all those weird smells.. (that is, if u ever had them)
happy.gif

haha stepford : magiclean is my favourite :D oh garlic in rice bin! cool!

levynn: cool tip. i knew we could put SOMETHING but never knew it was lemon

i have another! if your soup is too salty while still on the stove, put a piece of potato in, it'll absorb the saltiness. same reason we should put tofu in at the last minute. or else the tofu would be super tasty and the soup bland
happy.gif

(i love this auntie talk!)

Pink Bunny : No shit! Potatoes in the soup to absorb the extra salt??? Wah...

Another one for you ;P

If you want to prepare deep fried prawns coated with crumbs, put the de-shelled prawns in a bag of crumbs and shake it. This will help to coat the prawns evenly with crumbs without getting your hands dirty! Also enhance the flavour by adding salt, pepper and mixed herbs to the crumbs.

stepford: ya, and then continue cooking till potato is cooked. or else you get food poisoning from eating raw potato! :S

i seldom deepfry cos it makes the whole kitchen so oily. but because your tip sounds so happening, i will try! soon. hehe.

and if you feel you wake up with a dry throat after a night in an airconditioned room, place a glass of water on your bedside table. it helps to keep the room moist so your throat won't be dehydrated. works in hotels also

Pink Bunny : we share some similar tricks! I always place a cup of water on my bedside table and even fill up an entire bathtub with water during winter months.

Get yourself a deep fryer. No hassle at all and kitchen is still clean. Best thing is I wont be burnt by the splattering hot oil!

This is getting so interesting.

If you have leftover wine, freeze them into ice cubes and use them with some canned peaches to prepare desserts the next time.

stepford: are you also a closet auntie? keke. oh yes i remember filling the bathtub in japan many years ago when on holiday.

aiyah should have asked for deep fryer for wedding present.

cool about the leftover wine! but the thing is, we seldom have leftovers cos my husband will usually finish the bottle hehe. but i'll bear that in mind!

if your house attracts ants, forget 'combat' or other ant traps. just fill a glass of water and add rock sugar, and they'll be attracted to it and drown in there. sounds cruel but hey, they're quite pesty, these ants!

Hi all newly wedded,
Very happy to stumble across this site, I'm a newly wedded too. Has been married for 5 months now. Seems like the wedding was only yesterday. I would like to share something:
- Put a stainless steel spoon into a opened champagn bottle, the bubbles will stay a long time.
- For very smooth beer, add a sour plum to the beer, it will taste very good.

Cheers

wow joy, that's interesting! sour plum, like the suan meis that come in bottles? the kind we cook steam fish with?

another one! if you get superglue stuck on your fingers, rub with oil. it'll take a while but it will come off.

Oh really! Will have to keep that in mind. Always getting glue on my fingers.
happy.gif

Hey Pink Bunny, still can deep fry lah. If the stove gets really oily, use BBQ cleaner works like magic. My former flatmates used to cook oily food everyday and the kitchen especially the oven was very 'OILY' yuck! Tried scrubbing with usual cleaning stuff but not very effective, so in the end, the hubby suggested using BBQ cleaner. Problem solved. So now, we use BBQ cleaner when there is oil stains.
happy.gif
But must remember to use gloves.

Another tip I learnt from my hubby was to put a small spoonful of sugar into a vase of fresh flowers as it makes them last longer. Tried that with my daffodils and gladioli and they lasted over a week. Never knew that until he told me!

Quite unbelievable that men can come up with good advice sometimes.

In case any of you are interested, some of the SG brides are gathering together to hold a HouseCare class for all clueless new homeowners.

It will be held on one of these Saturday mornings, venue to be confirmed. After which, we will all head for lunch.

After the class you will know how to correctly and quickly clean ALL the areas of your newly renovated home. Mirrors, windows, stainless steel, dishes, pots, clothes, wardrobe, TV, floor, etc.

It's good coz so many of us are new to doing so MUCH HOUSEWORK!!!

Please leave me your email if you would like to join us. I'm in charge of collating the names lah.. Its free of course! =) or email me at [email protected]

hey babes...
thanks for all the helpful tips! sorry... so far i only know abt the lemon thingy.

anyone knows how to keep lizards at bay?? can u believe that 4 lizards had invaded my house in the past 1 wk??!!

how abt getting rid of those coffee stains left over time on the inside of the cups? i dun wan to use any Jif or detergent if that can b avoided...

thanks!
happy.gif

Many people use harsh abrasives to try to clean their coffee stains and then find that the stains keep coming back. Be careful about harsh abrasives, they can actually pit and scar the surfaces increasing the odds of the coffee stains returning. Instead try baking soda on a sponge to gently remove the coffee stains.Alternatively, use a soft cream cleanser to remove such stains. I find that jiff is too harsh..

hi pink bunny,

yes, the suan meis. Remmeber to get the sour ones, not the sweet ones.

Btw, anyone read the SImply Her magazines? It has alot of tips on house maintenance and cooking for newbies like us. I find it quite useful. Just want to share with everyone. (New subscrber will get a Stylus deep fryer cum fondue set.)

Btw, my HB teases me about becoming more auntie as I've just subscribed to Simply Hers instead of my regular her world. Hee Hee. He says me Ah Soh now. Sigh Sigh.

stains in microwave oven...i always put in a cup of soapy water & microwave it then then clean the moist internal with kit paper towel ;) then microwave a cup of plain water & clean off again with kit paper towel.

those of you who emailed me for the housecare class, we are scheduling it on the 20th May now to accomodate more folks in another thread.

Pls confirm if you are able to join us on that date =) should be fun to finally meet each other.

Hi Everyone, I just shifted into my new place with my hubby abt 9 mths ago and will be having my customary this coming June
happy.gif

I'm very glad to stumble upon this thread. It's really great to have this thread so that we can share tips
happy.gif
Like most of you, I am absolutely clueless when it comes to housework (thanks to my mum who has been taking care of me since young till I left the nest to set up my own home). Heehee but after 9 mths of knocks here and there, I manage to survive. Just want to share some of the tips with you all, perhaps you all can also enlighten me on better ways to clean the house
happy.gif

Tips:
1)To remove the mineral stains in airpot. Boil cut lemon or lime in airport. Airport will be sparkling clean after that.

2)To remove soap stains on shower glass door. Use "Bang"...very efficient.

3)Wax wood furnitures or parquet floor with pledge for shine and protection.

4)I use those sheets (to keep cockroaches and ants away) for all my kitchen drawers.

I need help to
1)clean the microwave (Matsu, you mentioned that you microwave a cup of soapy water. For how long? I've always been warned not to microwave water, safe or not?)

2) remove the algae growth at the corner of bathrooms.

Hi Starris

It should be held in Marine Parade ;) or one of the bride's place..depending on who is open to having it at her place lah..

sorry for late replies everyone. have just returned from japan. sigh biz trip la, not honeymoon. haven't even gone for honeymoon yet
sad.gif

wah mrs n, bbq cleaner? happening
happy.gif

wah matsu, that's a really good tip! any kind of soap will do?

starris - what is an airpot? i can't clean it if i don't know what it is! hehe. bang doesn't really work for me leh
sad.gif
i spray it on my toilet walls but i still feel the good ole sponge is best for this.

eeks i get lizards too. but now we just leave them alone. they keep the ants and flies away. they're generally harmless. just that they look really creepy :S

goober, i'm keen! haha what an auntie meeting it will be! may 20 you say? should be ok.
happy.gif

Hi Pink Bunny,

This is an airpot.
365713.jpg
Because you boil water with it, sometimes you may find a layer of brown stuff at the side (minerals).

I use "Bang" on the shower door which is tampered glass. For the walls I use the magiclean liquid (green in colour). What's ole sponge?

I've just been informed I may have to go Taiwan for business trip during mid-May. If it does not fall on the 20th May, I will join the "yuppie auntie gathering".

Cheers everyone and have a great weekend. Monday's a holiday too so enjoy your long weekend!

Hi Pink Bunny, welcome back! Never mind lah, eventually you'll get to go on your honeymoon. I didn't go until more than 2 months later. Yeah, bbq cleaner very happening. Wish I had known about it earlier, could have save me wasting all my energy scrubbing away like mad.

Btw, any of you having white gold wedding bands? The lady at the shop told me to take it off while doing housework to prevent scratches and wearing off the rhodium plating but silly me am always forgetting to take it off and now my wedding band looks kind of 'ancient'. Just something for you to keep in mind, maybe wear gloves when you're using strong detergents.

Would love to go to the 'yuppie auntie gathering' but unfortunately I'm not based in S'pore. You lovely gals just have to tell me about it.
happy.gif

So many tips since I left off. Pink Bunny, I'm aint closet auntie but just that since I'm no longer working, I 'try' harder at home. ;-)

BTW, what is this BBQ cleaner that everyone keep mentioning?

And does anyone clean the washing machine? Someone just asked me that and I went huh...???

yah Pink Bunny =0 May 20 Sat will be the day of our little Auntie meeting hahaha... also get to see some of the brides of this forum. everyone like one big family. i find that because we are not colleagues or come from the same school, we really can chat alot about life.. hubby, kids, home, etc... =D I attended many sg brides gathering already. all very fun!! =D

Stepford, wana join us for this house cleaning affair? u can share your tips as well to the rest..!

starris: hehe. the good old sponge. like the kind you use to wash your plates? that kind use to scrub toilet walls best! oh.... now i know what airpot is! we don't have that. ours is small one, works the same as those in hotels but bigger. got it free so not complaining!

mrs n: honeymoon now postponed to early june. we're going to vietnam!!! my wedding band is also white gold. we take our rings off at home cos it's more comfy la. oh yes, wear gloves when using strong detergent. my husband used gloves when we were pouring some horrible smelling liquid into our clogged drain. he looked so auntie haha.

stepford: BBQ cleaner, must ask mrs n, the endorser to explain hehe. you clean your washing machine? er.... how and why? but i do soak the cloth bag thing (the one that collects all the lint) in bleach and soap once in a while. gets quite smelly otherwise

grape: ya i think cos we're all going thru the same things la, that's why got common grounds. i'd invite you girls over but my house would really be perfect location to show 'what not to do' haha.

ok this is prob the best place to ask this question. i have a thingie that you put into the microwave and heat it up and then you can place it on your tummy or whever needs a bit of heating up. know what i mean? the thing is it looks like a cute little pink bunny (thus my name, you see how much i love it now?) and she's gotten quite dirty. she's not furry but she's got like little clumps of lint-like thingie stuck on her. anyone knows how to clean such a thing? it's got wheat inside so i don't think i can wash it

Hi grape, thanks for the invite but I'm going home in May to settle my gowns and 20May happens to be my first session, the designing part!!! Would love to join you ladies the next time round but in any case do keep me updated on what's happpening. ;-)

Hi Pink Bunny, I do not wash the washing machine, just that filter bag like you. But someone just asked me that and I was stumped. Suddenly I wondered if there is a need to wash the machine too! You are heading to Vietnam? We are thinking of going there too for a short trip. Share more details? Sorry but I don't have an inkling what to do with your little bunny.

stepford: yay congrats! gown fitting is really a whole lot of fun! we clean the outside of the washing machine only if we spill anything on it haha. the filter bag (so that's what it's called) gets smelly after a couple of months so might as well wash it la! ya we were supposed to only go to hanoi, but now that we have more time, we'll expand to include HCM too :D there's a thread somewhere where many people give advice on hanoi (honeymoon destinations or something) - quick, go see!

my bunny:
http://www.hotbodscreatures.com.au/novelty/index.htm

Pink Bunny : I wish I got a gown to try. 20 May is my first session so it's just discussing what I want and what he thinks I'm suited for. Sigh... I hope the gowns will turn out nice. Let me go read that thread. We are so keen on Vietnam. Have you considered going to Siem Reap from there on? I heard some people have done it, think take a boat ride or something. Must find out more.

About your bunny, no washing instructions on a tag or something?

I also just wipe the exterior of the machine!!!

eh stepford, i'm selling my gown leh, you want to buy or not? i give you goodie price la keke. if you want to see photos, email me: [email protected]

about vietnam, it was partly by elimination. we didn't want somewhere we both had been or too much shopping cos he'd lose me straightaway! haha

my poor bunny is quite old now so the instructions, if any, would have faded
sad.gif

aiyah talk to you ladies so much that i spent half an hour just now washing my toilet! haha

hi stepford, thanks for your email.. =)
Hey, my wedding is featured in Female brides - in case you would like to get some more ideas for your wedding!! or just ask me anytime lah. if i can come up with some idea to help, i will!

hi ladies.. last week, i tried to use jiff to scrub the stainless steel kitchen counter top and damaged one small section.. looks like heat marks. maybe scrub too hard. there was this old stain from the previous owner and nothing could get it out including the jiff..i was very upset so thought of covering that section with a chopping board or something. my friend recommended me a metal cleaner and i tried this morning. i just use a soft cloth and all the old water stains, rust stains, heat stains, all went away so easily! Amazing man.. some of these products in the market. any of you also have stainless steel stuff? its not easy to maintain huh..

as for the "yuppie auntie gathering" i think we can have it after may 20 since so many of us want to meet up but it's a bad date. =) when will be a better time?

ok... wll log in again later. going to mop the floor now... kekeke...ayoh.. so auntie.. cannot stand..

Hi Mrs N

I am using an organic dish wash detergent called DishDrops which works like this. It came highly recommended by a good friend who gave me a bottle during my housewarming.

I've seen it break down scoops of oil into tiny floating oil molecues so that its easy to wipe off. The one I have works as a dish washing detergent as well as a bbq/oily pots/pans cleaner when you use the spray bottle.
1 litre (abt S$17) can make 16 bottles of dishwashing detergent (saves you trips to NTUC and cheaper than the ones off the shelf which go for $2+ per bottle) and it can be put into the spray bottle (buy your own or get theirs for S$5) to clean your oily bulky items.

Really big difference washing oily stuff with mama lemon and DishDrops (mail order only, made in USA). It's gentle enough even for my sensitive hands!

If you would like to get it, my friend can help you to order. Prob can pass you within 2-3 days.

If the grease is really very tough, you can use the Kitchen cleaner ($8) to clean the grease.

I am typing the description here for you to read:
Powerful cleaning action quickly cuts through toughest greasy messes. •Safely cleans and removes soil from washable kitchen and household surfaces. •No rinse formula provides a streak-free shine. •Deodorises – refreshes surfaces with a fresh, clean scent. •Safe for use on all non-porous surfaces including counter tops, sinks, and kitchen appliances such as stove tops and refrigerators

think this one better suited to cleaning your BBQ appliance. =) no rinse somemore.. better!

Hi g00ber thanks for the info.
happy.gif
Actually its quite easy for me to get these cleaners. Almost any supermarket stocks them here (not living in S'pore at the moment).

Ha! Ha! Pink Bunny you so funny lah! Not too sure about your problem though, maybe some kind of upholstery cleaner or steam clean it? If all else fails, how about going to the pet shop maybe they have bunny cleaners?
biggrin.gif

it's so funny: yesterday i got home and did some cooking and i thought oh no the floor is so oily! i have let the girls from the thread down! how could i be so un-auntie! then i realised oh it's cos i had a pedicure before so my feet were still very moistured hehe

aiyoh mrs n, you very naughty ah.... ask me to go pet shop. they will laugh at me lor!!! hehe.

Mrs N's suggestion is so funny! Pink Bunny, not sure if you want to try this cos' it can be rather troublesome. Why don't you unpick along the seams, a hole big enough to empty the contents then you can throw your bunny into the washing machine to wash? At the same time, spread the contents onto a tray and sun them during the day to air them and prevent mould. Once you are done, fill in your now-clean bunny and stitch up. And thanks for the offer but I have signed up for MTM WG and EG so I want to see how they will turn out before I go for alternatives. ;-)

Hi all ^^,

Just found this thread very useful, I am auntie to be by 12th May 06 :P.

Besides using half-cut fresh lemon, you may place used tea bags or charcoal (left over after BBQ if u do have) to get rid of all those weird smells in your fridge.

goober - put my bunny in the dry cleaning machine?
kao_sad.gif
it's like my baby! i can't put my baby in a dry cleaning machine!!!! wah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

keke. yes i have been rather attached to her.

stepford: i think hubby also had the same suggestion. we'll prob try that. but i'll let him do the 'operation' cos i can't bear the sight of blood. haha.

yay welcome shirley!!! welcome to the auntie clan!!!
