ADVICE NEEDED! ITALY

From April to June and late September to October are the best months for traveling in Italy -- temperatures are usually mild and the crowds aren't quite so intense. Starting in mid-June, the summer rush really picks up, and from July to mid-September the country teems with visitors. August is the worst month: Not only does it get uncomfortably hot, muggy, and crowded, but the entire country goes on vacation at least from August 15 to the end of the month -- and many Italians take off the entire month. Many hotels, restaurants, and shops are closed (except at the spas, beaches, and islands, where 70% of the Italians head). From late October to Easter, most attractions go on shorter winter hours or are closed for renovation. Many hotels and restaurants take a month or two off between November and February, spa and beach destinations become padlocked ghost towns, and it can get much colder than you'd expect (it might even snow).

High season on most airlines' routes to Rome usually stretches from June to the beginning of September. This is the most expensive and most crowded time to travel. Shoulder season is from April to May, early September to October, and December 15 to December 24. Low season is from November 1 to December 14 and December 25 to March 31.

Weather

It's warm all over Italy in summer; it can be very hot in the south, especially inland. The high temperatures (measured in Italy in degrees Celsius) begin in Rome in May, often lasting until sometime in October. Winters in the north of Italy are cold, with rain and snow, but in the south the weather is warm all year, averaging 50°F (10°C) in winter.

For the most part, it's drier in Italy than in North America, so high temperatures don't seem as bad because the humidity is lower. In Rome, Naples, and the south, temperatures can stay in the 90s°F (30s°C) for days, but nights are most often comfortably cooler.

Holidays

Offices and shops in Italy are closed on the following national holidays: January 1 (New Year's Day), Easter Monday, April 25 (Liberation Day), May 1 (Labor Day), August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin), November 1 (All Saints' Day), December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception), December 25 (Christmas Day), and December 26 (Santo Stefano).

Closings are also observed in the following cities on feast days honoring their patron saints: Venice, April 25 (St. Mark); Florence, Genoa, and Turin, June 24 (St. John the Baptist); Rome, June 29 (Sts. Peter and Paul); Palermo, July 15 (St. Rosalia); Naples, September 19 (St. Gennaro); Bologna, October 4 (St. Petronio); Cagliari, October 30 (St. Saturnino); Trieste, November 3 (St. Giusto); Bari, December 6 (St. Nicola); and Milan, December 7 (St. Ambrose).

I hope information is useful...

I think that the Sicily Island is the most beautiful place in the World...
There are some very lovely city like Agrigentoi (with The Temples Valley), Taormina with the Roman Theather, and also are many big or little city not very expansive!
The life is very quite and the sun is beutiful!
Where do you think will you are go?

The best months to visit the cities of Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Verona, Bologna, Naples and the Amalfi Coast (in Southern Italy) are November or March. Look for great hotels in Italy with personal and up-to-date reviews on HolidayCheck. The most crowded periods are Easter, May and June, October and Christmas. July and August have become less crowded in recent years, but the summer can be fun but also uncomfortably hot.

The times we have chosen to visit Italy have been May/June, like from the 15th of May on and before the 15th of June. It's a great time, fares are lower, weather was wonderful x 2, 70-80 degrees, low humidity, flowers blooming, etc.

Our other trips have been in Sept/October, again, from about the 20th of Sept to somewhere in the middle of October. Lower fares, great weather, may need long sleeves in the evening, low humidity makes for great pictures with wonderful blue skies.

Maybe we've been lucky, but we have had less than a day's rain during all of our trips lasting 3 weeks.

We are planning to go for our honeymoon in Italy next year during Feb. Wondering if anyone has hotel deals and free n easy itinerary that we can study?

Hi verang12,

Wow Feb 2012, you still have quite some time. It's good that you're starting your planning early, as honestly, for a successful F&E trip, you'd need to do a lot of your own research.

Sure, it helps if you look at someone else's itinerary; but I wonder if you would enjoy the holiday as much? One of the main reasons for going F&E is to do things YOUR way; to visit what YOU want to visit, to do things that interest YOU.

Everyone's F&E trip is different and unique; they visit different places due to different interests, the pace of travel is different, even where they stay is different due to different budgets.

So my recommendation is to start doing your own research; there's tripadvisor, virtualtourist, wikitravel, that are all rich with recommendations like places to visit, hotels to stay in, and restaurants to dine in. My particular favourite is tripadvisor, as the real travellers' reviews are very useful; I've posted a few there myself.

The best place to start is actually with a map; online map or hardcopy map, whatever suits you. Remember that Italy is a large country, and it will cut down on your travelling time if you're not going to travel hundreds of kilometers every day.

Although it's a common thing people do, I find often people tend to squeeze far too many destinations into too few days with too much travelling in between; sure you get to see lots of places, but it has a very touch and go, rushed feeling, with a lot of time spent in train stations, on trains, or in budget terminals.

Try also if you can to visit the pretty and charming Italian countryside; some here have stayed a few days in the Tuscan countryside, etc. and found it really romantic; but really, any hilly coutryside around some of the major cities or towns will do.

It would be great if you could come back with experiences that no one here has; I think that's one of the whole purposes of F&E, to have new and unique travelling experiences.

But of course if you just wish to have the standard boring Milan - Venice - Rome - Florence itineraries, so be it; my job here is done, as I simply don't do standard boring itineraries.

One last thing; if budget is really a concern, one shouldn't be doing Italian cities, or really one should be avoiding large European cities; do less cities and more towns, or the countryside. In the cities, everything from food and accommodation can cost up to twice of what you'd pay in smaller towns and especially in the countryside.

Hi, also planning to go to Italy, France & agencies Switzerland for our honeymoon in Mar 2012. Any idea when is a good time to book the tour packages. Will booking during the upcoming natas fair be too early? We shopped around the pre-natas in hse promo last week and most said they cant promise departure date and if the price will be steady etc...left me clueless..haha.. Hope to get some input.
