cos tampines is named after the tampines tree.. which is spelled as TAMPINES.

the tampines area are full of tampines tree in the older days..
 
I thought Serangoon should be Saranggong as it is named after a member of the stork species called 'rangong' that used to live in the swamps around the Serangoon River.

anyway, in the older days.. spelling are not consistent.. they could have spelled it anything that sound like the original..
