Mach, no tks lah... i speak my mind most times... as long as things stay amicable then it's ok... end of the day we're sharing opinions, whether or not we adopt... it's still up to us...

Yes powder, that's true. Disappointing still, to discover that there are times an exchange of opinions do not go down too well with people who has their backs against the wall.

Anyway, 200th post.

Here's another poem by me to share.

The Indomitable One

Anguish weeped from the wretched song
Bloodied tears his sole source of warmth
Wrapped in piercing, rotting stench
Clad in shreds of wilted flesh
Wrists enclasped by cuffs of doom
Ankles chained and soul entombed
Escaping the lips of a condemned emperor
His soothing roars of raging whispers
He raised his head and to heavens he stared
Only to be mocked by His blinding glare
"'Tis time!" is heard, the crowd fell dead
Hushed and huddled they silently prayed
The swish of iron ends their dreadful wait
Sealed and delivered his abysmal fate
But screams and shrieks broke the muted grounds
"A scam! A scam!" the men astounds
For he had preserved his once lost crown
And rose to meet the blade like a deity's son
Cloaked in scarlet drapes he cries
"I shall not bow" with a smile so wry

G~gal, forget it

It's okay don't worry about it.

I wasn't planning on continuing the discussion with the other party making a biased judgement on my perspectives on offer based on my marital status. But since you did make the revelation, so be it.

The 'discussion' kind of ended anyway. She fled.

Huh.. oic. Hey I merely said you're a single cos u mentioned ur GF and not ur WIFE. Are you being a little sensitive here?? ;) I dun think Stella "fled". It's knock off time liaoz...

She 'fled' because she said she won't be posting anymore. I'm also knocking off, like NOW, but I didn't say I would not be posting anymore in that thread.

She claimed to have verified her statements, I asked her to show me, and conveniently she says she's said enough. -Yawns-

anyway, have a good Monday night everyone. Long week ahead!

Need some advice from you all.

How do I go about talking someone elder in the family into going for a medical checkup?

I'm talking about my aunt. She's the kind with a very traditional mindset and paranoid about going for a checkup in case they discover anything bad about their health.

To her, this is unnecessary expenditure even though her own husband suffered a stroke and underwent a bypass before, and her own sisters were both diagnosed with breast cancer in the advanced stage.

Her health is not very good as it is, which she denies, and always uses the excuse of not having any kind of enjoyment to indulge in unhealthy food.

To make it worse, I am not good at all at persuading and we almost tore down the roof before she allowed me to buy her an additional 1st-$ payout hospitalisation plan.

Since I'm doing a full medical checkup with this clinic recommended by my company and the package price is extendable to family, I asked her about it last night amicably but she declined as expected. I didn't insist last night for fear of another outburst.

However, it's been a year since her mammogram (she went for it not without much persuasion from her children, and also because I called to book a date at the polyclinic and also offered to pay for her), and she has never gone for a full body checkup before.

I'm not going to mention the package offered by this clinic anymore, since NTUC has a similar but cheaper package which I found on its website. Any advice on how I should approach this matter? She can't possibly be avoiding body checkups forever, especially with our family history and unhealthy lifestyle.

Sounds like my parents. I lied my way thru the whole thing to get them to go for the health checkup. I paid but bluffed them tat it's sponsored by company. Scheduled it on Sat so they can't complain abt taking leave. Chauffeured them there so they can't run away. Heheh. Basically short of lending my body for their checkup.

Can't ur aunt's children help persuade her again?

laundry, this one don't even need to ferry her there. they will come to your house to draw blood and collect the urine/stool samples.

her children are younger than me and don't see the importance of such matters yet. daughter doesn't earn much and son is in NS. $200 to them for a checkup is a lot of money. Ok, their mindset about money is a huge issue which I cannot fathom.

Anyway, gotta go off now. Continue later.

Rara, I dunno how to persuade such pple except to try to lay a guilt trip on them. Say their children may incur even more expenses if they are seriously ill due to late treatment, or their children's children may not get to see their grandparents, etc. If they cannot take gentle persuasion, then got to try this "ku rou ji" lor... :P

mach, think you are not so cool leh. ggal din do much in that thread what. don't know guys can be so sensitive as well.

Also didnt think stella "fled" as you put it.

Give the gals some credit lah.

G~gal, that's the other big issue - Money.

It's not as if she doesn't know how expensive treatment can be since her money's been almost wiped out thrice before by my mum's, my grandma's and my uncle's medical bills.

There's been a lot of communication problems in the family all this while, esp between my aunt and I. Money talk always brings emotions into the conversation and complicates matters.

I was thinking if I had offered to pay last night, she would probably still say 'No'. Well, in a way things have become so sensitive that she doesn't want to 'take' any more money from me (I give quite a large portion of my pay to her monthly). I asked her why she doesn't want to go for the checkup. She said 'I jsut don't want to go lor. No particular reason.' I tried the soft approach by showing her the pamphlet and saying 'You just take a look lor. A couple of hundreds, if nothing, good, can set your mind at ease. if anything, better to have it detected early.' But she doesn't see my point. Maybe she does, but just don't want to go. I don't know. I only know that if there is really anything wrong and it is not detected early, the financial burden that will befall us will make this 200 bucks seem so insignificant.

As for my cousins, they also conveniently use money as an excuse, when they're willing to spend $100+ on a monthly shopping trip or on a new game console. I know we all have our indulgences, but this is only once a year. I can't force it down their throats either lest things turn ugly. I told her daughter that she declined, and she said 'Aiya, she got no money mah. Like me, my pay raise is only coming at the end of May. It's not that I don't want to go for the checkup but I don't have the money.'

Sigh... I don't know. They live day to day without planning for rainy days and are sceptical about new financial products. On the other hand, I worry too much yet am not effective in conveying my concerns. Bad.

Sorry everyone, for using this thread as my ranting ground.

simpleman, already cleared things up with G~gal. She didn't do anything on purpose, and everything's good. At that point in time I didn't want to continue the discussion with stella since she was getting personal, so didn't appreciate the unexpected revelation of my marital status.

And I loosely used the term fled because I don't appreciate spouting something and then not sticking around to at least justify yourself when prompted. Made it kind of a waste of other people's time who bothered trying to understand what you were trying to say.

Rara, the older generation tend to have this mentality leh... I'm not too sure what tactics you can use to persuade your aunt into agreeing to the checkup. Can try what G~gal suggested lor.. lay the guilt trip on them and hopefully they'll budge? =P

rara, maybe just do more simple thing like mammogram that she has done before. And also check blood pressure and cholesterol since she may be at higher risk

simpleman, thanks. i guess that's the best way out now. Make sure that she goes for her annual mammogram at least. Actually, this mammogram thing had dragged on for a while. If not for the fact that my other aunt was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer early last year, she wouldn't have agreed to go for her first scan last year. Time to pick up the phone again!

aiyooo mach, yet another poem !! young man, you live in what era?? poem after poem, and your poem is so chiem. the english machiam out of my O levels textbooks. tak boleh understand la.

Morning peeps... back to my desk today :P

Hey RaRa, you can call up SATA... if I'm not wrong they have free mammogram on certain day of the week. Can't remember issit Thur or which day, cos my fren forwarded me an email sometime ago. But I've not been there cos the timing is not convenient for me. BTW, try to teach your aunt to do BSE every month. That's how I detected my lump (quite small but it was growing and I had a little scare) and subsequently went for an op.

Mach, I appreciate you trying to clear the air but next time maybe you can clarify before making comments like that (ie me not being cool). I believe we're all mature adults here and just sharing our views. Like powder said at the end of the day, it's up to us whether we wanna follow those views. But I dun appreciate you saying "Disappointing still, to discover that there are times an exchange of opinions do not go down too well with people who has their backs against the wall." Who were you referring to specifically and why shld you feel disappointed? I think others wld think that you're being sour about others not sharing your views? Anyway, I think unless there is a definitive answer to what constitute flirting (harmless or not), there will be no end to the debate. If the debate is to go on, let's participate w the spirit of good sportsmanship and not be too presumptuous. OK?

I like poems...even though I dun consider myself particularly literary in nature i like the occassional WH Auden, Dylan Thomas, etc.. Here's one of my favourites from Auden:

=Funeral Blues=
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Rara reports!! Just reached office

Thanks for the advice. Ya I know there's the mammogram bus that tours the island. Will check it out. If don't match then I'll just call and book lor. There's a discounted price for women above a certain age I think.

G~gal, ya the poem evoked in me the exact feelings you described.
