Ha ha. the above is exactly what I want to say. So we think that we can lie (we are deperate) and no one will find out. But mostly we will be prick by our conscience. And since we know we can't really lie with a clean conscience, why not own up up front? It is better right.

Have you ever read this book: "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky. You will know what I mean.

Yes read the book simpleman. Quite some time ago Actually to me, lying is not so black and white. It is not a solution but it could be a necessary evil to prevent bigger problems. Lying is therefore permissible if it can help to avert disaster. Which AL thinks he is doing. But if the lie is already discovered, then it's better to come clean instead of digging a bigger hole, which is something AL fails to understand.

finally got time to go online to read this thread.

btw, someone talking abt lies vs conscience. Actually, conscience is always there to bug it. But with practise, we become better in dealing with our conscience but the guilt never ceases. E.g. in affairs, it is not uncommon that one would think nothing much of it and come up with all kinds of justifications and reasons. But with time, especially during low periods. It will crept back to haunt them. Cos, conscience has never left us. We just build our defense against it.

During times of vunerabilities, naturally, we will feel the effects of guilt. We cannot lie to ourselves and say, what's guilt? We know its there. We just pretend that it isn't.
