A Place for Singles

G~gal, it's good that you and hb have the same taste in cars. I think if we decide to get a new car after 4 years when this old one passes on (wahaha), we will have a hard time agreeing on which one to get.

Hi powder, ya the handling is suppose to be quite gd. As for calculations, ya, it will be a stretch, but hopefully the new job will reward me more than what I'm getting right now. The car will be adequate for kids la.. this is one of our considerations, which is why we're not getting the Swift liao.

ah siao, ya we've done quite a bit of research...hb is one of those pple who needs to think v long before getting anything one :P so dun worry about adequate research.

RaRa, how come you'll have a hard time agreeing what car to get? Well, it's easier for us to decide cos hb usually trusts me on my taste ;)

yeah i'm so excited for u!

G~gal, dunno... we wow at diff cars on the road and our colour preferences are also quite different.

I like hatchbacks and (nicely designed) bulkier cars, but he likes streamlined cars with the sportscar silhouette. common guy taste.

Well, we'll cross the bridge when we come to it. Haha I still want a black Picnic though. If we can afford it, I think I will get my way because we want to be able to drive our children for family outings together with their ah gong ah ma.

Thanks powder

Also quite excited to get our 1st car...

RaRa, yeah hb and I also prefer hatchbacks!! ^5 ;)

Picnic is pretty spacious and can seat 7 so can definitely bring ah gong ah ma along for outings. But I'm a bit scared of handling cars that are too big...like v hard to park!

g gal..ur hubby think alike as me..i also will think long long way b4 i purchase big items...yrs b4 i get my present car, i also do lotsa research...

oh ya... that's true. but i'll leave that problem to my bf. heehee. he'd driven army trucks, lorries, and commercial vans before. i will just cross my fingers. :p

wah... is this onemotoring or some car forum? keekee.

Basically, I don't think it is a good time to get a car now. The way I see it, the recent flutuations in the COE pricing is due to car dealers stategy to stir up the car market. The pricing for cars before CNY was in the 1st place $3k to $4k higher than months before. Those that booked their cars in the 'lower' price due to the price slashing during the COE dip probably failed to get their COE bid. This is the tactic dealers use to influence buyers to 'top-up' their bid due to increase in COE pricing.

Wait for the rush to be over and the pricing might come rocking down lower.

Milo.. better talk about car than porn, no? ;) So how long do you think I should wait??? Actually planning to get one 1st so that hb can get used to it and let me practise during weekends while I get my license by this yr.

Ceci, ya... have some plan in the pipeline...;)

Wait around 2-3 months. Normally pricing near festive seasons are higher.

Think somewhere around May to August period should be lower.

This is my guess only. Don't shoot me if isnt. :p

ggal, your hubby not yet get license? its better to get a higher pay job if intending to buy car... cos whatever u are getting now is always only enough for your current expenditure.. kekeke... maybe you should wait.. i dunno.. but i tend to think the rebound of COE prices is always 'manipulated' so that they can recover the losses suffered for the low COE in the earlier bids...

Ok Milo... will consider and shop around 1st. Anyway need to go for testride too ;) Ya la RaRa, must learn driving lor... much as I prefer being driven :P Bo pian... but I haven't sign up for classes yet.

it's very costly getting a license. for me at least. luckily the car is fed by my bf's company. most of it. else can die.

Ceci, my hb has to go for the basic theory exam to convert his M'sian license to local one. My next job will entail sales la...so hopefully I will get a lot more than what I earn currently. Yes what we earn now can allow us some luxuries so we'll need to cut down once we get the car, but then again, with the new job, I think we have a lot less time for those luxuries too (like eating out, going for holidays, etc). Win some, lose some...

wow cecilia you passed on first attempt? less than 2k is considered cheap for school isn't it? I'm less than halfway through for private and I already spent 1k!

rara i passed 2nd attempt. 2K rough estimate la.. really lost count after some time... my first attempt was on a raining day... stress lor.. failed by one mistake and the tester was so strict...

cecilia,

they don't really lose from the lower COE at all because the cars were sold in the higher marked up prices due to the CNY.

I bought my car in June last yr. The price was only $1k higher than the 'so-called' COE crush prices. The thing is, the COE was over $12k then but for the new pricing, calculations is done with COE at $5k. To secure the bid, most probably have to pay the additional $1k for guaranteed COE. What u will get is the same car price for a car with COE at less than half. So, the profit margin is actually higher than last yr.

Milo, I know cars cost more than last yr now... but well, we're getting it out of necessity.. it's not a luxury to us at all. Given a choice to drive or not, I still prefer not to and save my money for investment or holidays. Also, I always find it a hassle to park, even when I'm just a passenger in my colleague's car.

hi,
since the current discussion is on cars, can someone share with me if u all know of any good and inexpensive workshop i can go to for servicing like changing of engine oil, checking of brakes/replacing of brake pads. i hv a coming to 3 yrs old toyota altis and i hv been going to borneo motors for servicing so far.
thks!

yes ggal its always a hassle to park! i hate finding parking lots and that can make me lose my temper haha!

snowflo, borneo motors expensive hor.. i also send my car to borneo motors for servicing, can cost $300 plus... but dun wan bring to outside carshops yet.. cos still new

cecilia,
yah man... very expensive that's y i want to look for alternative since my car is 3 yrs old very soon and so no more warranty.
actually i'm also looking at changing the tires. any shops to recommend?

hi g-gal,

I was actually replying to Cecilia on her comment on 'losses' from the lower COE.

i just believe that the car prices would likely fall again. So, unless need to die die get one now, otherwise, why not wait for a few months. Furthermore, if i read correctly, u have yet to sign up for driving classes + your husband has to convert his license too.

Hehe.. Milo.. you shld also read the post to ah siao that my hb takes a long time to make a purchase one.. so must plan now in order to buy in a few month's time >.<

Cecilia,

Borneo Motors servicing is so crazily exp. I'm servicing mine in Msia for around SDG90 inclusive of Helix Ultra fully synthethic oil.

If you only want to do normal servicing like changing of engine oil, filter, spark plugs etc.. can go petrol station servicing.

If however you want your parts changed like brake pad, etc etc.. go to a workshop better. Not the original car manufacturer though - there are a lot of workshop outside.

ggal... sorry no read the earlier msg. the archives so long and the thread growing so fast.
