ggal, i went to cafe del mar and MOS tonite. actually not very happening la. i hv to arrange for some young ppl to meet other young ppl. wah lau, everything turned out really salah today. now got to arrange another outing for them. Well, at least i saw MOS and next will be St James. see, this auntie is so busy trying to be HIP so that i can relate to my gals better.

ggal, on 2nd hand cars, u would like to buy one of those that have a regular servicing. Best if there is a servicing booklet.

Check the brake pads, the windows.

Check the front & back for weilding marks. That's an indication of major servicing after big accidents. Check if the paint is original.

How old a second hand car r u looking at? If its still within the warranty period, its something good.

Also check on the tyres. Don't get one with worn out tyres or u will need to replace them soon. Most importantly, u need to test drive and make sure the gear transition is fine. Since, its a sports car, it is probably manual. Repairing the gears can be expensive.

btw, what brand & model u r looking at. Look for availablity of parts. Some old cars, u can't find the parts and u will be trouble.

HI Milo, thanks for the tips... the MX5 is registered in 1992 :P I know it's not advisable to buy a car that's over 10 yrs old...but somehow not easy to find one that is the model we like and is within budget. We'll ask the owner to bring the car for a full checkup at a workshop in our presence if we're really interested.

Latino...what happened, why salah??

G~gal, I'm not particularly familiar with the MX5 as I was looking at the RX8 previously. The typical guy wants the sportscar but gal scared of the costs tat comes with it syndrome. Anyhow, some layman stuff to consider. Ask the guys for the cheem cheem stuff.

- MX5's image as a girly car. But if ur HB's ok with it, next...
- Insurance. If it's classified as a sportscar, the insurance can easily double.
- Tyres. Think MX5 comes with 17-inch rims. Cost of replacing those tyres also doubles.
- I think MX5 doesn't use rotary engine. Which may be a good thing coz the RX8's clutch (I was told it was a racing clutch) felt really heavy. Can really develop those turnip calves liao.

Sigh... i also know the MX5 is quite "lady-like" for a sports car... actually hb chose it for me as i'll be using it more for my work... well... the other choice wld be a Toyota Celica and i think that's super chao beng... :P Hb's other option is Tuscani by Hyundai.. what do y'all think?

HI latino

I dont think you want to meet my mum. She will probably drive you crazy as well... Haha...

Wah seh. I've not been to MOS nor cafe de mar as yet ley. You're definitely hippier than me.
happy.gif
haha

Heheh. Tis opinion is even more farfetched. Some taxi-driver uncle told me Celica is a lousy car!! Coz he caught me eyeballing RX8s & Celicas during the ride.
happy.gif
He recommended Nissan Skyline. Fwah. Happening.

Totally clueless abt Tuscani. But Hyundai leh...

Toyota is dropping the Celica from their list already...gonna be collector's item. What's the Nissan skyline?? The 350Z is sweeet tho...:p~~ Just dun buy the orange colour one..

g gal, go look at the copen. hard top convertible within your budget.

tha old mx5 uses plastic sheet for the rear view mirror and for a coe car, it's almost confirm blurred.

tuscani is not a bad car, although a bit high on fuel consumption. if i were you i would go for the tuscani cos a brand new one is prob not much more ex than your miata. plus your concern that the miata is impractical would be addressed to a certain extent since the tuscani has 2 rear seats.

tuscani is lousy... my friends drives one, no power, high fuel consumption and poor handling...

206cc?? hard top covertible.. megane cc also nice...

celicas are not very nice nowadays... i still would love to drive an audi TT ... drooling...

Nissan Skyline is another chao beng car. Hahah. Performance cars all scream super beng mah.

Demio, Copen might be too small for G~gal & hub. She's already complaining abt the RX8's interior space.

Ceci, mai lah. 206CC backseats are so pathetic. For ferrying cabbage patch kids mebbe.

Latino went to MOS? very happening wor!
next time if u go St James....jio me hor! I want to go Movida

*getting ready my dance shoes*

but why are you arranging outing for young pple?

ggal, wah you and your hubbby change track so fast. From a reluctant car owner to one looking at a sports car for a 1st time owner.

I can see that you HB is too emotional now. It is good, everyone of us want our dream car but be realistic. Let the emotions run for a while and then when it cools down deal with it.

Firstly, it is going to be more expensive to operate a sports car - all the little things will count as Laundry has pointed out from insurance to tyres (and yes depending on the rim size, tyres will cost not 2 times but 3 to 4 times more)

Secondly, don't talk first. Go test drive. A sports car is not half as comfortable as your normal car. Eigine noise, insulation, seats and positioning - they are not your normal car. And when you are tall it could be worse.

OK. I have not owned a MX5 but I have driven one before. It is nice roaster but as I said, not so comfortable. If you are into car and love to play with car and it is your weekend fun car, it is fine. As a everyday car, I have my doubts. And yes, check the rear windscreen - it is plastic (for the model I drove) and when it rains, you see nothing.

Not too sure about Tuscani but as they said it is Korean. Wish you good luck.

Not to pour cold water, a sports car is really a second car (you already have another day-to-day car). A sports car is fun to drive when on a weekend and not when you are stuck in traffic. And the parts in a sports car are meant for performance, that is, they will not last - meaning maintenance cost will go up.

For 1st time car owner and being practical singaporean, if you are the more sporty kind - a hatch back with sporty look is a good compromise. And also for doing sales, if you are drive a sports car, what sort of image are you projecting to your potential customers?

Note: Sports car are meant for people who care about performance and image and you are paying a premium for these factors. But are these factors important to you now?

Hi all... thanks for all the comments abt the cars. Seriously, the MX5 is not my choice.. I was just humouring hb ;) I'm a v practical person la.. definitely less emotional than hb. You think I'll want a car like that? Can't even ferry my galfrens if we wanna go somewhere... or fit in luggage plus shopping if we wanna drive to M'sia :P But I din want to spoil his fun...skali he sulks again :P

Anyway, today we went to the Hyundai showroom to take a closer look at Tuscani (again to humour hb :P) After looking around and asking a lot of qns, we think the new Avante is a gd choice.. it's w/in our budget, it looks ok, quite stylish, it's spacious, seats are comfy...all in all, pretty gd. Also, according to the JD power initial quality study, hyundai is ranked 3rd, below Porsche and Lexus. Hb says he'll go for test drive once his license is converted
happy.gif
Of coz, I'm still keeping my options open, but seriously there are few cars that are below $58K, reliable, looks gd and can fit us comfortably.

ah siao, so sure you won't get married and have kids?? Men at 40 still can make it... harder for women.

korean car??..err..somehow i dun really fancy them..still not much confident on their engine..

errr..cannot predict wats in the future..but looking now should be lar..LOL

Ya...realise that there is this biasness against korean cars. Well, maybe 20 yrs ago they weren't that gd cos they just started making cars. But now, they shld have improved a lot. Must give chance mah. Same w M'sian Proton. Last time they were so bad and ugly. Now the Gen2 and Waja are not bad right? Anyway, beggers can't be choosers lor. Cannot afford a Jap car so have to find an alternative. Not as if all Jap cars are gd (or made in Japan) anyway.

korean models are much nicer compared to last time n can be as nice or even better than some of the jap model..but their engine still not good lor..tat's wat most pple said..

Hmm... I used to think the same la.. I thot only Jap cars or German cars are good. But seriously, you won't know until you try one. If you go and read the reviews of the Avante, you won't find anything related to the engine at all. If there's any complaint it is just quibbling over superficial/trivial stuff like boot space, etc...hardly my concern
happy.gif

Continetal cars arent as good these days..cos they're v complicated, easily have electronic problems...Jap cars still the best....

but korean cars are real cheap...
happy.gif

Aiya, Korean cars no good, Jap/continental cars too ex... Stick to cabbing best!
happy.gif
No need to maintain, no need to clean, no need to park... best!

backy!

G, the MX-5 is an excellent choice if u wanna do a converti and dun mind manual... it has superb handling and i can atest to the car's handling on the track. it is definitely not a girly car and has a cult following... simpleman is right abt the noise etc... becos it is a low car, u will feel the road alot.. sort of like lotus elise but of cos better... but this can be countered with a good sound system. finance-wise the extra road tax is only $500 more per yr, but the insurance is gonna be very high if neither of u are 30&abv...

the hyundai avante is a good choice... it is the car hyundai is expecting to compete for corolla biz. the FC of the avante is pretty decent and it's a whole new development in itself. i would choose it over a corolla anytime... the looks are there, the interior feels so much better than a corolla, the only thing i dun like are the fact tat the door handles hangs lower than most cars proportioned from the door. else the HU can also connect and show your battery life - a great convenience when your battery running out... oh, this feature most ownders & sales pple dun know abt.

my suggestion - look for an MX5 tat's left with a few yrs if it's wat u guys wanna experience in life... 1-2yrs' experince before u plan your family... there are always cheap cars in the market, but most times the cars we like are not cheap becos they are nice and command a higher demand...

Hey powder.. back so soon?? Wah.. seems like you have a lot of exp w the MX5 and Avante? You tried out both before? We found a MX5 that's 14 yrs old, COE till 2012. It's $33K. Looks hot ;) but I am not sure I want so much attention when I'm on the road :P And it's not really practical if I need to transport stuff around.

I have no issues w the Avante at all. It feels really gd sitting inside. of course I can't tell if it's a gd ride since we haven't gone for the test drive, but from the reviews we read, it seems pretty gd.

ya just back, normally we go overseass is just for lunch/dinner... cos all of us got family, not keen to travel too long..

33k is expensive... for coe mx5, i would not pay abv 4.5k/yr.. i'd rather buy a coe BMW then. offer him 25-26k max. else dun bother...

avante i've been going to check it out with frens... although to me it's a better buy, alot of pple can't get over it being hyundai... so they rather buy corolla... hehe. tuscani is nice and definitely worth looking at, but it's been around for 4yrs liao leh...

I'm ambivalent abt the Tuscani. It look ok, but it's really just a sedan dressed up as a sports car. Basically doesn't seem to perform better than it looks. I'm pretty much sold on the Avante. Will have to wait for test drive to confirm if it's the one we want. But frankly, up to now, I still find the convenience of cabbing the best advantage over driving...simply dislike the idea of maintaining a car since I'm already too busy for housework.

cabbing is definitely cheaper... much cheaper... only sucks looking for one when u reeeeally need it.

u guys shuld always always, when buying cars, let the car sit in over 5days before deciding again... the pull factor is strong... sometimes pple just like the idea of oning a car but it may cause problem down the road... do consider carefully... yeah i more worried abt the influences on your hubby....

Hehe.. it's not a problem getting cabs where I live and where I'll be working. Sure there are times when it's harder to get a cab, but it's less frus than finding a parking space on weekends. and taking the MRT is better than crawling along the CTE during peak hours...this is one lesson I learnt when I was working in Raffles Place :P

Like I said, I'm definitely more practical than my hb and much as he may be moody over what I say, he knows that I make sense. I feel much happier knowing we're saving $1.7K per mth just by not driving. On the other hand, I know the car may come in handy for my job. See how la.. I dun even have a license yet!

oh u worked out your monthly to 1.7k? sheesh... tat's not little ok? it's alot of money! and cabs...

rent a car for the occasional weekends better!

We dun really go out on weekends. At most go to the gym w hb on Sat, then lunch and a bit of window shopping. Sun is usually spent at home or visiting parents who live 20min away by train + $4 cab ride. Not worth renting a car also. Ya $1.7K is a lot a lot of cab rides!!
happy.gif

Morning.. yeah.. was awaken by sudden flash of lightning and thunder. V heavy rain so I was late this morning.. cldn't leave my house. Luckily boss doesn't seem to care that I'm late..hehe :P

morning peops, so the car talk is over? sorry but i need some advice from the experts here. :p

my bf is thinking of doing insulation for the car. the engine of the lao pok chia is so loud to the extent that it's slowly affecting my bf's hearing due to prolonged exposure everyday.

anyone can advise how much it costs just to do simple insulation?

just change tat huge piece of dampening material that is placed under the bonnet. dun waste money on insulation... pple will assume u wanna play ICE (in-car entertainment) and charge u big money...

Get really good ear-plug or ear-phone (can custom made) that fit his ears perfectly - can block out most of the noise.

And can listen to music at the same time and is portable when you get out of the car and transferrable when you change car.
