8 Tips to a Perfect Toast
Tip 1:
Keep it short and sweet.
Tip 2:
Etiquette: Stand to give a toast and remain seated and attentive when you are receiving one.
Tip 3:
Prepare ahead of time; know what you are going to say. I had my blackberry with me then, and I read it a couple of times in between intervals when I was waiting around, and just before I went on stage to give my thank you speech.
Tip 4:
Mention those you are toasting by name, your relationship to them, and a thought about this wonderful event. For example: First and forth most, I would like to thank my parents, my bridal clan (each by name and how they have made a difference would be perfect), my wedding planner and so on…
Tip 5:
Adding something your guests can relate to would be witty wherever possible, if they are in good taste. For example: thanking your Mom for home cooked meals all this time, thanking your elder sister for always being there and being someone you can always count on.
Tip 6:
Speak slowly and loudly enough for all guests to hear. Keep eye contact whenever possible. Smile!
Tip 7:
You may want to avoid consuming alcohol before your toast to remain poise and sober.
Tip 8:
Remember to wrap up the toast with a hearty ending like “Cheers!†or the traditional “yum-seng†if it is a Chinese wedding.
