Every celebration deserves a sumptuous feast, especially a celebration as important and joyous as your wedding. With couples more focused on planning an intimate and experience-oriented wedding for their guests, making sure that their guests are well entertained, taken care of and fed during the celebration becomes more important than simply having a lavish celebration.
With food being a big part of any celebration, couples want to ensure that their wedding venue (or caterer, in the event that their chosen venue doesn't provide food) is able to deliver an unforgettable gastronomic feast for their guests. After all, the way to a man's (or woman's, or anyone!) heart is through his stomach.
When do you need a caterer?
If you are hosting your wedding at a hotel ballroom or restaurant, you will not need a caterer as your venue will provide the food for your celebration. However, if your wedding venue does not come with food, you may need to look for a caterer to provide food for you and your guests. In some cases, venues that don't offer food work with catering partners to offer their couples a comprehensive package that includes both the venue and food. Before you look for a caterer, do remember to check with your venue if they have any catering partners you can choose from for your celebration.
How to choose a caterer?
There are many caterers out there for your choosing, depending on the cuisine you prefer, whether you need the food to be Halal or not, whether you are looking for an all-round caterer with decoration and planning services or one that only offers the basic catering services, and of course, your budget. Regardless of your criteria, there is no right or wrong, and there is a caterer for everyone.
Sit down with your groom-to-be and discuss what your budget and what you would like from a caterer. If your venue does not provide tables and chairs, you might want to look for a caterer who has tables and chairs included in their packages or provides them at an additional fee. Skip the all-round caterers if you already have a wedding stylist to decorate your venue. If you don't, then you might want to look for all-round caterers who offer styling services in addition to catering food.
What is included in a catering package?
Since buffet set-ups are not allowed for weddings during the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the catering essentials such as food warmers, table skirting, basic table set-ups and drinks dispenser are not included in catering packages these days. Instead, most caterers would pack individual portions of food in regular or themed disposable containers for wedding celebrations. Basics such as disposable utensils and napkins will also be included in catering packages today.
Caterers who offer all-in catering and styling packages might offer add-ons such as table set-ups, décor and themed dinnerware and utensils to ensure that the presentation of food and your overall wedding theme is aligned.
Always remember to check with your shortlisted caterers on what their packages include or don't include, and if you need to top-up for additional add-ons.
When and where to start looking for a caterer?
If you have no preferred caterer in mind, you can start searching for one approximately six months or more before your big day. For more popular caterers, you might want to start searching and booking their services much earlier to secure them for your big day.
