Yan and Tien’s Romantic Wedding by the Waterfront at Monti At 1-Pavilion
Junior college sweethearts Yan and Tien finally sealed the deal in a romantic celebration by the waterfront after 10 years of courtship.
Yan, 28, a business executive, and Tien, 28, a photographer, first met as junior college classmates, but it was during long hours spent together in the same project work group that they truly got to know each other. Drawn together by Yan’s warm, easygoing nature and Tien’s knack for making her laugh, their connection grew naturally over time.
Following a surprise proposal in Taiwan, the couple began their search for a wedding venue that felt just right for the next chapter of their story. They found it in Monti At 1-Pavilion, where they exchanged vows in a romantic open-air solemnisation before celebrating their union with an intimate, heartfelt dinner surrounded by family and friends.
What drew you to each other?
Tien: Yan has very cute expressions, and her friendly demeanor helped us to become good friends at the beginning.
Yan: Tien always knew how to make me laugh, his non-stop teasing also helped to break the ice and paved the way to comfortable conversations and first dates. Besides, we were in the same project work group, so naturally we spent lots of time together and that’s how we got to know each other more.
What is it about your partner that you love the most?
Tien: She’s kind, thoughtful, and the type of person who finds joy and love in the little everyday things. But at the same time, she is focused and driven, and takes her commitments very seriously.
Yan: Tien’s quiet thoughtfulness, drive and courage to be different, to chart a path of his own, will always be qualities I love and admire. Through the years, his tenderness and love never fail to perk me up on the most tiring of days.
What was the moment that made you realise that he/she was the one for you?
Tien: I don’t think it’s a particular moment, and I don’t really believe in “the one”. I just think that she is someone I’m ready to do life with, and I think it’s a conscious choice I make every day.
In our 10 years together, we grew and found ourselves alongside each other, and learned to love through each other. There truly never was ‘a moment’, but love manifested in every decision that we made with and for one another.
Tien, tell us about the proposal. What was the planning process like?
It took place in Taiwan, under Taipei 101. The challenge was to get her there, of course. I originally planned to surprise her when I picked her up at the airport with a car boot full of flowers, but with her family joining and a whole lot of other factors in play, I decided to change the location to an empty carpark overlooking Taipei 101.
Long story short, we managed to get her there and surprise her with the car boot of flowers, together with a handwritten card and a video montage of our eight years together! Some of my family live in Taipei, and it was the first overseas destination we visited as a couple, so it was special to us and very nice to have both families present to witness the occasion.
Yan, did you know a proposal was coming before it happened, or were you taken completely by surprise?
I did not suspect a thing. Throughout his months of planning, he’d never once hinted about a proposal, or asked about my expectations or preferences, keeping it a complete surprise. He was confident he knew me well enough, and well, he did. It went perfectly and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
What was your wedding planning like? Did you have a specific theme/venue in mind?
Tien: We looked only at restaurants because we liked the irregular layout of it. We wanted a venue with lots of natural light, and from there we are able to narrow down quite a bit. We didn’t really have a particular theme, but as a photographer, I like colours so we used warm coloured florals to balance the blue interior of Monti At 1-Pavilion. Florals from Wild Matters, Willows and The Dreen Folks were all coordinated to look similar.
We see weddings as a very personal event, so we tried our best to add a personal touch into everything we did. We had a “decentralised guest book”, which was basically cards with 72 of our chosen pre-wedding photos printed on the back side for guests to write their messages to us. The cards and pens were placed on each table so our guests could write it throughout the afternoon, and didn’t have to rush through it at the reception table. Our wedding favours were old school bread from Yan’s favourite bakery because Yan loves bread and it was super popular. We also wrote a personal card for every guest, along with a choice of coffee, tea or non-caffeine option tailored to each of them.
What was your wedding day like and how were you feeling?
Honestly, it felt pretty chill. We didn’t have a gate crash, so we reached the venue at 8:30am after fetching the bride, and there were quite some pockets of time to just chat with friends, even before our solemnisation started. We were blessed by nice cloudy weather so it wasn’t hot at all, even though we had our solemnisation at the top deck of Monti, and it was very beautiful. It was also one of the segments of the day we were looking forward to (we would have to hold the ceremony indoors in the restaurant if it rained, which we also didn’t mind).
What did your family/friends have to say about your wedding day?
We mostly received feedback that it was very personal and nice. I think our parents were happy as well because we didn’t leave out the parts they wished we included.
Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding.
Just being able to have a chat with friends and family was our highlight! Having the time to interact with our guests, seeing friends and family gathered and having a good time with one another while celebrating the special day with us, was really special.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?
Don’t start too early and spend too much time and energy fretting. Save them for the final stretch when everything will need your attention no matter how early you started! Plan sufficiently before the wedding, but when the day comes, don’t worry about a single thing and enjoy the day. We also had a very trusty group of bridesmaids and groomsmen to help us with the execution, and they allowed us to enjoy the day to the very best!
