Chen Min and Alson’s Carefree, Dream Wedding at Vineyard at HortPark
Chen Min and Alson said “I do” amidst HortPark’s tranquil gardens in a picture-perfect setting that reflected their love.
Chen Min, Architectural Designer, and Alson Yeo, Dance Studio Owner and Director, first met at Singapore Polytechnic’s dance club. The pair instantly clicked and it wasn’t long before they soon realised they were with the one they were meant to be with. After a surprise proposal in Jeju, Chen Min and Alson decided to tie the knot at Vineyard at HortPark, where their family and friends gathered to witness and celebrate their union, before moving the celebration to Coup.sg for an after-party.
Share with us what attracted you to your partner, and what do you love most about them.
Alson: I fell for her character, personality, her look and how easy we just clicked. I love everything about her – I love how free and peaceful I feel when I am around her
Min: I was drawn to his personality, sense of style and chattiness – he has many stories to share. I love how he loves me through his actions and words, and I love where his heart is at. I lack a lot on the emotional side of things and he shares with me perspectives that humbles and challenges me.
What was the moment that made you realise that he/she was the one for you?
Alson: To be honest, it’s the feeling I have when we are together, and I can’t really pinpoint exactly what that moment was. But if I really had to, I think it would be the fact that she’s always sticking by me despite what I go through and never once giving up on me.
Min: For me, it was more of a “I want you” as he shows his love and care for me. He also holds qualities that I don’t, and I feel that we complement each other.
Alson, tell us about the proposal – what was it like?
Alson: COVID-19 happened, so I had to wait until it was over and travel was re-opened before I go ahead with the proposal. Jeju was one of the destinations that opened up for tour first, so I booked us on a trip to Jeju. My proposal plan was pretty fluid – I was simply waiting for the right moment to pop the question.
As for Min’s proposal ring, I customised it at Stelliyah. When they first started, Min and I attended their jewellery making session and quickly became their friends and fans of their brand. The idea and process of making the ring meant quite a bit to me.
Chen Min, did you know a proposal was coming before it happened, or were you taken completely by surprise?
Min: I did not have a clue. I was very surprised and in my recollection still, I was waiting to hear the line “Will you marry me?” but the ring was already on my finger before I heard it. I thought it could be a promise ring or something. I told him to show me the video as proof but until now he has not shown me. Also, funny thing was we were supposed to catch the sunset at the cafe roof top but the sunset was partially blocked as we rushed there. It was still a memorable and beautiful day spent together though.
What was your wedding planning like?
Alson: For the wedding, I played a supporting role to Min – I went along with whatever she chose for our big day.
Min: The planning was challenging as many decisions had to be made and we were also trying to spend consciously as well. We wanted a wedding that had a chill vibe, nothing too formal, and in a setting where we could be comfortable and fully present. At the same time, I wanted our wedding to be at a place where we can easily visit anytime and reminisce because I feel that a solemnisation is a precious and significant moment to revisit. I also wanted our solemnisation to be in a well-shaded outdoor area, surrounded by nature or had nature as a backdrop.
With those considerations in my mind, my first choice was Vineyard at HortPark. I fell in love with HortPark at first sight when I visited during a school excursion. I was impressed by how the architecture meets nature. I loved the way the civic space leads one’s sight from the ground opening up to a high ceiling space to an outdoor deck extending to a reflective pond and it continues to the green lawn and beautiful park beyond until it meets the sky. I loved all these layers, openness and tranquility the space had to offer. It felt wholesome and had a certain grandness to it – most importantly, it gave me good vibes.
Take us back to your wedding day – what was the day like and how were you feeling?
Alson: It was like a dream. I cried so much! I felt not just love from Min, but love from my friends and family. We were also so thankful for all our lovely friends who helped us on our big day – they took care of all the stress so it could be stress-free for us.
Min: I spent the day enjoying and experiencing many firsts, but at some point, it got a little overwhelming and I thought I couldn’t get in the zone to be fully present. However, walking down the aisle with my parents and seeing Alson waiting for me brought an unexplainable wave of emotion — after 15 years together, we were finally here, ready to say ‘I do.’.
What did your family/friends have to say about your wedding day?
Alson: My crying was pretty iconic – a lot of them were caught off guard because they didn’t think I would cry since we’ve been together for over 15 years.
Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding.
Alson: The photoshoot, the wedding preparation and of course, seeing my bride. Above everything else, I would say the solemnisation was the most memorable. The after-party was also pretty epic, I think – I blacked out!
Min: It would definitely have to be the moment I first saw my groom and our solemnisation ceremony.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?
Alson: I think planning it as easily as it can be would be the best! Plan in a way you would enjoy rather than feel stressed out about. Ask for help if you have to. Ultimately, I think it should be a day that you and the love of your life celebrate, so enjoy the process! Above all, work, plan and contribute together!
