Theingi and Yancong’s Sunset Destination Wedding at InterContinental Koh Samui Resort
After watching so many couples say “I do” and helping them immortalise that special moment, it was finally Theingi and Yancong’s turn to stand in front of the camera and have their moment as they say “I do”.
Theingi Win and Cai Yancong, the heart-and-brain duo behind Heart to Heart Stories, first met each other back in October 2011, when Theingi’s polytechnic schoolmate introduced her to his army platoon mate, Yancong. While it was their physical appearances that piqued their curiosity about each other—she thought he was very tall while he was intrigued by her exotic looks—it was ultimately Theingi’s extroverted and caring side paired with her no-nonsense attitude and Yancong’s gentle and easygoing nature that connected their hearts. The lovebirds celebrated their union in a beautiful destination wedding in Koh Samui, complete with a chill beach vibe, sunset solemnisation ceremony and fun all around with their family and friends in attendance.
What was the moment that made you realise that he/she was the one for you?
Both: It was during our first date at Mcdonald’s. The way our conversations flowed and the connection we had when we talked about our goals and dreams in life made us feel so in tuned with each other – like old souls that had known each other for life.
What was the proposal like?
Theingi: Yancong proposed at Meomi Cat Cafe because we are both crazy cat people. It was an intimate surprise with a few of our close friends on the pretence of celebrating one of the friends’ birthday. It was full of cuddles (with the kitties), tears (from me) and fun! Yancong even documented the whole process, from the planning, to finding the ring, to the proposal itself, and made a vlog out of it. I loved watching everything from his perspective and it was also through it that we found our passion for documenting life’s important moments.
Tell us about your wedding. What was your wedding planning like?
We had initially wanted to have a sunset wedding on Ngwe Saung Beach in Myanmar because we fell in love with it back in 2019 during our first trip there. Due to COVID-19 and the politics happening in the country, we had to look elsewhere to bring our dream wedding to life, and that’s when we found Koh Samui, which happened to be in between Myanmar and Singapore.
Since we wanted our ceremony to be at sunset, that helped narrow our search down to the west side of the island. Even though we’ve never once visited the venues on the island or the island itself, we decided to wed at InterContinental Koh Samui Resort because we liked what they were offering in their packages. Everything was done via Zoom calls with our planners and the hotel’s events associate, and the whole process was so easy!
Did you have a wedding theme?
We wanted something timeless, classy but fun and “us”. We also wanted the venue to be the main highlight so we chose our florals and decor to compliment the location. For the ceremony, we did not want the decor to block the beautiful view – the very reason why we chose to have our wedding there in the first place. So, we went for a low floral arch full of whites and greens that added beauty to the already beautiful view.
For our dinner reception, we wanted to create a little tent of fairy lights so we could wine and dine under the stars with our favourite people. For food, we chose to have a buffet of Thai dishes instead of a plated 8-course meal so our guests would be able to move around and mingle more. That also helped in creating a chill vibe during the celebration. The food was delicious, and together with the free-flow alcohol that was served throughout the night, it was the perfect recipe for a good time!
What was your wedding day like?
Seeing how everything turned out on the day of our wedding was surreal because it was even better than we ever imagined! The photos from their brochures didn’t do justice to how pretty the location is in reality. The whole experience of seeing it all for the first time on our wedding day made it even more special to us.
Our guests flew in all the way for us and we wanted to give them the best time we could give. A lot of our guests are industry friends, so we wanted them to fully relax, be in the moment and enjoy their time as guests – which is a rare chance for us wedding vendors!
We chose to have an unplugged ceremony so everyone can be fully present in the moment. We had “Phones” and “No Phones” moments at specific parts of the ceremony; no phones were allowed during the entirety of our vow exchange, but our friends could take photos to post on social media after it was over. We had also planned a few games during dinner—games that we had seen at other weddings—to give our friend-ors a chance to play the games as guests as opposed to documenting it and missing out on the fun.
Theingi: For the wedding, I had five outfit changes while Yancong only had two. I regretted settling too easily for my gowns during our Singapore wedding, so for this overseas wedding, I wanted to go all out. Although I do think I went a little overboard, but I had a dress for every moment, and I have zero regrets!
Overall, our wedding day was filled with super chill beach vibes and good music, and most importantly, awesome company. We lit sparklers, ate, drank, played games, laughed, danced and watched fireworks together.
Did your family and friends enjoy themselves?
Yes! Our guests got super into the games and it became so competitive, it was hilarious! Even our emcees got so drunk by the end of the night that they stumbled to make announcements.
Seeing everyone being in the moment and enjoying it to the fullest, was priceless. Every one of our guests had fun, laughed and loved hard in the glow of the setting sun and tasted delicious Thai food with the smell of the sea in the air.
Share with us the most memorable moment of your wedding day.
Definitely one of the most emotional moments was when we were exchanging our vows during our ceremony. We cried, everyone cried. It felt surreal to finally make it happen, and incredibly moving to see all our favourite people travel just to celebrate with us.
Another one of our memorable moments was the fireworks display. We did not expect it to be so grand. We had the song “Sky Full Of Stars” play in the background during the fireworks, which added so much more to the experience! Getting to enjoy it together with our loved ones was definitely unforgettable. It was definitely something you can’t do in Singapore.
Our hotel also had a special “marriage certificate” made for us to sign during our ceremony, and because we did not have any officiant, one of my bridesmaids ended up having her name randomly put as “Celebrant” on the certificate. We were all surprised and ended up with stitches laughing at the randomness.
What is one lesson you’ve learned from your wedding planning that you’d like to share with other couples?
We would definitely advise couples to remember the reason for planning a wedding – which is only possible because of the love you have for each other. Next, fill your big day with people and things you love. Be as intentional as much as possible, and lastly, as clichéd as it sounds, enjoy every moment and be present.
